HANDSOME YOUNG MAN WITH HANDLEBAR MUSTACHE IN MINNEAPOLIS, KANSAS

A well dressed and handsome man with a handlebar mustache poses for his portrait at the studio of H G Cole in Minneapolis, Kansas. The reverend Url R Hicks Almanac (1900) reported that Cole won a fifty dollar cash prize for “the best photograph of a moving tornado”. The 1880 US census finds the 30 year-old Cole working as a photographer in Minneapolis. He was of English extraction and born in New York. His wife’s name was Emma.

Well, I guess handsome is in the eye of the beholder. I do think he’s got a great look though.

I have more photos by the same photographer. One is for two children Mamie Skeen and Perry Skeen.

Do you have any photos by S. Luce or Sam Luce? He was another photographer at Cole’s Art Gallery in Minneapolis, KS. up until Dec. 1882. Then he went to Lindsborg, KS.

At present I do not have any photographs by Sam Luce. Keep monitoring the Cabinet Card Gallery because I am adding new photographs nearly every day. Do you mind sharing why your interested in Mr. Lace? Is he family? Good luck in your search for his photographs.

I research Lindsborg, KS history and S. Luce was a photographer there for a couple of years. He had came to Lindsborg from Minneapolis, KS. and Cole’s Art Gallery. I own an antique store as well as an avid hobbyist photographer.

I am a painter based in the UK and making work from found photographs.
I am particularly drawn to the section on your blog of bearded men and wondered if I might use some of the photographs as a start to some work? My name is Sarah Ball if you would like to see examples of my work please visit my website.
    Your collection is magnificent.

I enjoyed visiting your gallery. Please feel free to use some of the bearded subjects of the cabinet card gallery. I feel comfortable sharing them because I know that you will alter their appearance and not directly copy them. Please let me know when you have finished some of the portraits so that I may visit your gallery to see the results and enjoy more of your work.
