This cabinet card photograph was taken outside and features a kid, a goat, and a goat cart. The child is dressed for cold weather as he sits in the cart holding a whip. The cart is more of a wagon than a cart. Note the large thin wheels. The goat is wearing a harness. The identity of the child and photographer are unknown. The location where the photograph was taken is also unknown. This cabinet card photo has cornerwear and is in overall good condition (see scans).

A MAN AND HIS HORSE AND WAGON (VINTAGE OCCUPATIONAL REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a man and his horse and his partially covered wagon. Judging by the man’s clothing; he is a working man. Perhaps he is a delivery man of some sort. He is wearing a white shirt, bow tie and smock. I believe that he is wearing long heavy gloves. The gloves probably pertain to his occupation. The stamp box on the reverse of this postcard indicates that when it was published, the postcard postal rate was 1 cent. The one cent rate was in effect until World War I when it was raised to 2 cents on a temporary basis (1917-1919). The rate was again raised between 1925 and 1928. The rate became permanently two cents in 1951. As a result, the stamp box in this case, is not helpful in establishing the date that this postcard was produced. However, the style of the front of this postcard indicates that it was produced not long after the 1900’s or 1910’s. This postcard certainly documents history. The postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

YOUNG WOMAN PULLS HER DAUGHTER IN A WOODEN WAGON

This vintage photograph features a mother pulling her daughter in a wooden wagon. The photograph appears to have been taken during the winter. The child is bundled in a heavy coat and has her hand protected from the cold by a fur muff. She is sitting on a heavy blanket. Mom is also prepared for winter. She is wearing a long dress and is accessorized with a fur scarf and she has fur cuffs on her sleeves. This photographed was purchased from a collector in England. A sticker on the reverse of the photo indicates the photographer’s name. His name is Oscar Hurt, though I am not certain about the accuracy of his last name since the writing is difficult to decipher. This photograph measures about 4 1/2 x 6 1/4.   (SOLD)

“IF LOOKS COULD KILL”: PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY AND THEIR DOG

I wish I knew what was going on in the photograph on this vintage real photo postcard. Mom, Dad and their child all are displaying very intense expressions. The man and woman are staring at each other. It is as if their eyes are throwing darts at each other. The child, wearing a nautical outfit, looks like he just saw a ghost. The child is standing on a wagon. The family dog is standing on it’s hind legs with one paw on the wagon. This postcard’s AZO stamp box indicates that it was produced sometime between 1904 and 1918. CUTE LITTLE SAILOR BOY AND HIS BABY SIBLING IN A WAGON

This vintage post cabinet card era photograph is charming. A little boy in a sailor suit stands beside his baby sibling who is sitting in a wagon. The baby is wearing a gown and bonnet. Big brother is holding the handle of the wagon. Note the large back wheels on the wagon. The wheels are metal, not the rubber wheels that came later in time. The photographer and the location of the photo studio are unknown. The photo measures about 4 1/2″ x 6 1/4″ and the mat may have been trimmed.

ADORABLE LITTLE BOY POSES WITH HIS COASTER EXPRESS WAGON AND HIS CUTE DOG

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable little boy posing with his Coaster Express wagon and his cute dog. The freckle faced boy is displaying a sheepish grin, and why shouldn’t he? After all, he is spending time with his favorite toy and his very best friend. Boy, toy, and dog are posed outside and in front of a wooden house. The AZO stamp box indicates that the postcard dates to sometime between 1904 and 1918.

FAMILY PORTRAIT OF PARENTS AND THEIR FOUR CHILDREN TAKEN IN AN ALLEY SOMEWHERE IN SPAIN

This cabinet card portrait immigrated to the Cabinet Card Gallery from Spain and the photograph was likely taken there. The image features a set of parents and their four daughters. The youngest child is sitting in a wood wagon and is accompanied by a doll. It is not clear in what setting this photograph was taken. Is the family inside a studio, or are they actually being photographed in an alley? I’m guessing that they are in a studio and the photographer has created an outside scene within his studio. Be sure to note the family members great hats.

A LITTLE GIRL AND HER WAGON IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN

WAGONGIRLThe Huntington & Clark studio of Detroit, Michigan, produced this wonderful photograph of an adorable little girl and her toy wooden wagon. The child’s hair is well styled and she is wearing a pretty frilly dress. Historical author, Thomas Yanul included Frank Scott Clark (1865-1937) in his series “Business & the Baroque: Six Portrait Photographers of America”. Clark was born in Peru, Indiana and claimed that his family lived in America during Revolutionary War times. Clark began his work career by working many different jobs in eastern United States and Canada. Around 1880 Clark was hired by prominent background painter, Lafayette W. Seavey. Seavey was very popular during the cabinet card era. Clark was then hired by a friend of Seavy who happened to be famed New York portrait photographer, Napoleon Sarony. Clark was involved with creating, making and setting up backgrounds for Sarony. He also worked as a camera operator. He worked several years with Sarony and also studied and was employed  briefly with celebrated New York photographer, Jose Maria Mora. In the next phase of his career, he worked doing portraits, backgrounds, and theater scenery. In 1892, Clark moved to Detroit and managed the the Charles  A. Millard studio estate. In 1894, Clark partnered with George Huntington and they worked together until 1903 when Clark began operating a studio on his own. The above portrait was taken during this partnership. Clark prospered and became very involved with Detroit’s upper crust. He not only served as their photographer but he also was active in their sport, social, literary and art circles. In his narrative, Yanul states that Clark “became a larger than life character of the Detroit scene”. He describes Clark as being a “slightly bohemian figure”. Yanul adds that Clark had a charismatic personality, dressed in an artistic fashion, and was quite intellectual.

TWO ADORABLE LITTLE GIRLS RIDING TO MARKET IN HORSE DRAWN WAGON (GERMANY)

This cabinet card captures two precious little girls riding a toy horse drawn  wagon to market. Note the terrific detail of both the toy horse, and the backdrop. The horse appears to be covered with fabric and has leather saddle bags and a tail made from hair. The printed German title below the photograph, “Ruckkehr vom Markt.”, translates to “smooth traffic from the market”. The card is dated 1884 and was photographed in Germany. The publisher of this photograph was E. Linde, who was located in Berlin, Germany.
