ELIZZA LA PORTA : PRETTY ROMANIAN BORN ACTRESS : APPEARED IN ANTI-ABORTION FILM

This vintage real photo postcard features Romanian born film actress, Elizza La Porta (1902-1997). She appeared in a number of German silent films between 1926 and 1930. The IMDb credits he with 19 film appearances. Some of her films had racy titles. She performed in “The Bordellos of Algiers” (1927), as well as “The Vice of Humanity” (1927). La Porta also appeared in a social commentary type film entitled “The Right of the Unborn” (1929). This silent film dealt with the issue of abortion and took a generally anti-abortion stance. La Porta retired from the film business with the advent of sound film. This vintage postcard was published in 1927 by Ross Verlag (Berlin, Germany). The card is part of a series (no.1694/1). This portrait of Elizza La Porta was taken when she appeared in Sokal’s film, “The Student of Prague” (1926). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

TWO WOMEN IN AN INTIMATE POSE : ONE WOMAN STRUMS HER GUITAR : BOTH WOMEN MAKE A FASCINATING FASHION STATEMENT

guitar1 guitar2

This vintage real photo postcard has a number of interesting features. The women are posed on a fabric covered bench. They are dressed in noteworthy attire. One is wearing a nautical type outfit while the other is dressed in a kimono styled pant suit, or possibly pajamas. I wish I knew the story of these two women. What was the nature of their relationship? Sisters? Lovers? Due to the passage of time, the story has to be whatever we imagine it to be. This photograph was taken by the Foto Rembrandt studio in Bucharest, Romania. Viewing the photographers ink stamp on the reverse of the postcard, leads me to believe that the photographer was A. Maza. The stamp box indicates that the postcard was published by K Ltd sometime between 1918 and 1936. At least one postcard collector has posited that K Ltd may actually be the maker of the paper that the postcard is printed on. This vintage postcard is in good condition (see scans).

ATTRACTIVE YOUNG ROMANIAN COUPLE IN TRADITIONAL GARB (1930’s)

romanians

romanians 2 This vintage real photo postcard presents an interesting ethnological portrait of a Romanian couple dressed in traditional garb. It is notable that this couple was not concerned about public displays of affection. The young man has his right arm wrapped around the woman’s shoulder/back. The young lady’s hand is resting on the gentleman’s shoulder. The pair give an appearance of a proud loving couple. Could this be a wedding portrait? Note the woman’s purse. It has a design that includes someone holding a leash attatched to a dog. An inscription on the reverse of this postcard reveals that the photograph was taken in 1937. The postcard is in very good condition.

The pretty young woman seen in these vintage real photo postcards is a contestant in the Miss Europe beauty contest. The young woman’s name is Liliana Delescu..She represented Romania in the 1932 competition. The contest included only European contestants. The contest was established by a French journalist in 1927. Most of the women in this event had won their own country’s national beauty contest, and used the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up for the Miss World pageant. Miss Delescu has been described by a fellow blogger as having a “certain mystery” and a “a come hither” look. She went on to become a respected composer. This postcard was published by the well known and acclaimed photographer, Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. Postcard 2 was photographed by the M Pergay Studio and published by Noyer. Postcard 1 and Postcard 2 are in very good condition (see scans).

A BEVY OF BEAUTIES AT A BEACH ON THE BLACK SEA IN ROMANIA

girls at beach roumania

girls at beach roumania 2A “bevy” of beauties? I’ve never used that word before. What is a bevy? I looked up the word and learned that a “bevy” is a “large group of people of a particular kind”. The “particular kind” in this vintage photograph are pretty young woman in their bathing suits at the beach. The beach is located in Romania and is at the edge of the Black Sea. Some of the women are using parasols to protect themselves from the sun. The reverse of the photograph has a stamp indicating that the photo was taken in Contanta, a city on the shores of the Black Sea. It is located in southeastern Romania. I would love to know the story behind this image. Are these young ladies, friends on a beach trip, or are they models posed by a professional photographer? What’s your guess? This photograph measures about 2 1/4″ x 3 1/4″.    SOLD

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND HER FANTASTIC PULL TOYS

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable short haired little girl posing between two pull toy animals. The toy elephant and lamb are larger than most pull toys I have seen in other vintage photographs. Note the girl’s piercing eyes. The history of pull toys is interesting, It is believed that the earliest wooden toys appeared sometime during the Stone Age.Wooden toys were produced during the Middle Ages and were manufactured by industry in the 1800’s, especially in Europe. Steiff was a manufacturer of pull-alongs. The toys were described in advertising as “High Class Riding animals”. In 1880, Margarete Steiff, a German seamstress, founded the stuffed animal company that bears her name. Interestingly, a bout of polio limited her sewing to using just one hand. Her nephew created the first soft bear for his Aunt. When an American wholesaler saw the bear at the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1903, he ordered three thousand of them. By the time of World War I, Steiff had sold millions of these toys in Europe and the United States. Perhaps the toys in this photo postcard were made by Steiff. Producers of early pull toys included Fisher Price and Lego. This photo postcard was produced by the Foto Luz studio, located in Bucharest, Romania. The studio’s name is embossed on the lower right hand corner of this scallop edged postcard. The postcard is from the 1940’s and is in excellent condition.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF THREE BEAUTIFUL WOMEN DRESSED IN THE FASHION OF THREE DIFFERENT CULTURES

This vintage postcard is another one of those images that immediately piques my interest. I wish I knew what brought these three women together and why they are dressed the way that they are. It seems to me that the women are dressed in a fashion to represent the clothing of different ethnicities. The woman wearing the beads represents gypsies. The woman with the parasol and kimono represents the Japanese culture. The woman with a flower in her hair, represents Spain. Perhaps these ladies are dressed to go to a party. Note the cat sitting next to Miss Spain. This image is from a private studio. There is a studio name and location lightly embossed on the front of the postcard. This intriguing photo was taken at a studio located in Constanta, Romania. The city is located in the Dobruja region of Romania, on the Black Sea coast. The stamp box in this postcard indicates that the postcard was produced by K Ltd., sometime between 1918 and 1936.   (SOLD)

GORGEOUS WEDDING PORTRAIT OF JEWISH COUPLE IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA (JUDAICA)

Finding vintage real photo postcards that feature wedding couples is not all that challenging. However, this particular photo postcard is exceptionally special. First of all, the wedding portrait is gorgeous. The bride looks absolutely beautiful in her wedding gown and veil. The bride holds a giant bouquet of flowers. She shows great poise. The handsome groom is dressed to the nines in his tuxedo and top hat. The second factor that distinguishes this photograph is that there is some known history attached to it. The postcard is from an album belonging to a Jewish family in Romania. The front of the postcard is embossed with the name and location of the studio that took this photo. The studio was located in Bucharest, Romania. The name of the photographer is difficult to decipher. I believe that this postcard is from the 1920’s.    SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAIL CARRIER IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

This vintage real photo postcard features what appears to be a young mail carrier or delivery boy. He is carrying a tied packet of envelopes and he is wearing a uniform. A patch on his sleeve reads LMB 117. This image is a bit of a mystery. Is this teenage boy a mail carrier or a student? What does LMB signify? What is the meaning of what the boy is wearing on his head (flower wreath)? There are more questions than answers provided by this photograph. The photo was taken at the Lonyai studio in Bucharest, Romania. The stamp box on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the paper was produced by K Ltd, likely between 1918 and 1936. It is probable that it was produced sometime in the 1930’s. This interesting image has excellent clarity.                  ADDENDUM: A viewer of this photograph has painted a more accurate picture of what is occurring in the photo. “This boy is being an award winner of his class at the school. That package under his arm didn’t contain envelopes, but books. The page on the top is a diploma. One more thing: that wreath symbolize the laurels with which the Roman emperors adorned their foreheads when they turned victorious from the wars…The best pupil at learning was of course victorious…”.
