YOUNG GIRL OUT FOR A DRIVE IN SOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN

A young girl sits behind the wheel of an open early automobile in this vintage real photo postcard. She is dressed femininely with puffy sleeves, a wooly hat and a necklace with a locket. The photograph was taken at the Novelty Photo Studio in South Haven, Michigan. The photographer was Charles M. Erard who conducted business in South Haven beginning circa 1905. The Bulletin of Photography (1915) announced his move to Battle Creek, Michigan. He was in Battle Creek working as a photographer until at least 1930. He also had a studio in Albion, Michigan around 1910.

AN INCREDIBLY DAPPER YOUNG MAN IN MARIETTA, OHIO (1903)

This wonderful vintage photograph features a very dapper looking young man. He is dressed beautifully in his dark sport jacket and slacks and light vest. Note his large collar, wide tie and tie tac. His hat is worn on just the right angle and the brim is bent in just the right way. This “cool dude” has an expression that shouts “I am cool and ready for anything”. The photograph comes from the studio of Fisher and Graessle which was located in Marietta, Ohio. Harry Phillip Fisher (1879-1949) was born in Ohio and began his career working in his father’s shoe store. When his cousin, Carl Graessle, came to visit, Fisher’s career plans changed dramatically. Cousin Carl was a photographer in Cincinnati and the two cousins decided to open a photo studio in Marietta. They opened the studio in 1901 and it was located above the Fisher shoe store. The partnership dissolved in just two years and Graessle returned to Cincinnati. Fisher kept his photography business going until his retirement in 1949. He did portraits, landscapes, and photographed local events. His business included producing real photo postcards. A large collection (over 8,000 images) of his work is owned by Marietta College. Fisher was married to Daisy E. Fisher in 1906. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta.  (SOLD)

FANCY CAR AND FANCY DRIVER IN SCHONINGEN, GERMANY (RPPC 1934)

A classy looking man and his classy looking automobile are the subject of this vintage real photo postcard produced by a photographer named Herr Wurm in Schoningen, Germany. The car looks new and is absolutely beautiful.The owner of the auto must love the car. He is showing his affection by putting one foot on the running board and placing his hand against the car’s door. He looks quite stylish with his white coat, dark hat, and driving gloves. There is something sticking out of his coat pocket. It may be a wallet and you can be sure that he had to be somewhat wealthy to afford this luxurious car. The town of Schoningen is in the district of Helmstedt, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The community is known for its mining of lignite. The writing on the reverse of this photo postcard is dated 1934. The postcard is not postmarked and was likely mailed inside of an envelope.   (SOLD)

SWEET LITTLE GIRL AND HER DOLL IN ANNECY, FRANCE (CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPH)

This carte de visite photograph features a portrait of an adorable little girl. She has the most interesting riveting eyes. She is wearing a long necklace and has a bow in her hair. The child is wearing boots and a short dress. During a recent trip to Austin, I noted that this style of dress was quite popular on the University of Texas campus. The little girl is standing next to her toy doll. This photograph was taken by J. Favrat who operated a studio in Annecy, France. The printing on the reverse of the image indicates that Favrat had won honors for his photography at a Paris exhibition in 1899. Therefore, we can safely conclude that this cdv photograph was produced sometime shortly after that date.

RELAXED COWBOY WITH A WRY SMILE AND A PIPE

A relaxed cowboy with a wry smile poses for this vintage real photo postcard. The image is taken in a photographic studio likely located in the western United States. The cowboy is wearing a vest and a pocket watch. He is holding a pipe. His lace shoes seem to have kicked around a lot of dust in their time. The postcard’s AZO stamp box indicates that it was produced sometime between 1904 and 1918.

CUTE LITTLE GIRL WITH A PAIL AND SHOVEL IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

This cabinet card portrait features a little girl with an engaging smile. She is holding a wooden pail and is standing next to a shovel. She posed in front of the studio’s proverbial wall which the photographer embellished with leafy vines. The photographer of this image is Carl Joseph Horner (1864-1926). He operated a studio in Boston, Massachusetts. I have seen him advertise himself on other images as a “European Photographer”. On the reverse of this cabinet card he describes himself more precisely geographically as being “from Stockholm, Sweden”. It appears that, at least in Boston, European photographers held more status than American photographers. Interestingly, Horner developed a great reputation as a sports photographer. This wonderful vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of two pretty young girls. They are dressed beautifully and are wearing identical skirts and scarves. It seems likely that they are sisters. The girls are holding hands. They are wearing gloves and one of the girls is holding a purse. They are both flashing half smiles. They are standing in front of a studio’s backdrop of a forest. The studio and the children are unidentified.

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WEDDING COUPLE IN ROSEDALE, INDIANA

This cabinet card portrait captures a young couple on their wedding day, or at least in their wedding clothing. They are dressed beautifully for their special day. The bride is wearing a garland of flowers.  Her white gloves are draped over the wicker chair and she is holding her hat. The bride is pretty and appears somewhat happy as she poses for this photograph. Her new husband wears an expression that looks like he either ate too much at his wedding, or that he is having second thoughts about getting married. Lets hope he just overate. The photographer of this wedding portrait is W. A. Baldridge (1860-1924) who operated a photo studio in Rosedale, Indiana. He is listed in the 1880 US Census as living in Florida, Indiana and working as a clerk. The 1920 US Census finds Baldridge living in Summit, Ohio and operating a photography business.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF PRETTY FRENCH FILM ACTRESS JOSYANNE

This vintage real photo postcard features French actress Josyanne (1901-1999) as she appeared in her screen role in the film “Carnelvale di enezia” (1928). The IMDb credits her with 14 film roles between 1924 and 1939 including L’aube de sang (1924), Le costaud des PTT (1931), and Aces of the Turf (1932). This postcard is of Italian origin and was edited by G. B. Falci of Milan. The postcard is part of a series (no. 103). Listed on the front of the photograph is the name Stefano Pittaluga (1887-1932). He was an Italian film producer credited with helping revive the Italian film industry in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. He began as an owner of cinemas and than expanded to become a powerful distributor of Hollywood movies. Pittaluga further grew his business by becoming a major film producer.
