A PHOTOGRAPHER NAMED MARSH IN GALION, OHIO : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card enters the cabinet card gallery on the basis of the photographer’s last name, Marsh. That is my last name too, but we are not relatives. My last name was assigned to my family members courtesy of an Ellis Island immigration agent back in the 1910’s. This was a common ocurrance, according to many immigrant families who entered the United States years ago. Certainly some of the immigrants changed their name by themselves for assimilation or business reasons and then blamed immigration agents. This cabinet card is actually a nice portrait of an unidentified couple. They are well dressed and the man is a handsome gent. The photographer is Charles Burr Marsh (1861-?), born in Michigan, and married in 1887 to June White (1867-1933) in Ohio. He had studios in Fayette, Wauseon, and Galion, Ohio. In 1908 he became a charter member of the Professional Photographers Society of Ohio. He served as an officer of the organization. A 1915 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine indicates that Marsh also worked as a newspaper photographer. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN IN ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS

marsh

I tend to buy nice cabinet card images by photographers named “Marsh”. I do so because my last name is also “Marsh”. None of the photographers are my relatives because my earlier American ancestors were not named Marsh and the name “Marsh” was an Ellis Island invention. Levi Marsh is the photographer who took the cabinet card portrait above. He operated a studio in Adams, Massachusetts. The North Adams Transcript (1954) described him as a “one-armed photographer”. Levi was born in Canada in 1846 and immigrated to the United States in 1865. He married Blanche Knight Marsh in 1868 and appears to have married again in about 1885 to Elmeda Marsh. He is listed as a photographer in Adams in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 US censuses. Levi Marsh died in Adams in 1901. This cabinet card features a young woman wearing a ruffled  high collar dress. She appears a bit bewildered in this photograph indicating she did not have a great degree of comfort in front of the camera.

LOVELY YOUNG COUPLE SIT AT TABLE WITH UNIQUE TABLECLOTH IN FAYETTE, OHIO

marsh photo_0005This photograph is included in the cabinet card gallery more for the photographers name than for any particular merit of the image. The photographer of this cabinet card is C. Burr Marsh and he and I share the same last name. As a result, I’ve adopted him as a ancestor and include his work in the Cabinet Card Gallery. You can see more of his photographs and learn more about him by clicking on the category “Photographer: Marsh”. The reverse of this photograph indicates that it was 1888 when Marsh photographed this couple in his Fayette, Ohio studio. This image is features a lovely young couple sitting at a table that is topped with two books laying side by side. The table cloth in this photograph is interesting and unique. I do not recall seeing a similar patterned table cloth on other cabinet cards. Perhaps a visitor to this site can give us better understanding of this type of tablecloth.

A MOST UNUSUAL BEARD IN FAYETTE, OHIO (1888)

The gentleman in this cabinet card photograph sports a very unusual beard. One could call this beard a “neck beard” because there is virtually no facial hair populating the beard. This image was photographed in 1888 by C. Burr Marsh in Fayette, Ohio. Other photographs by Marsh, as well as biographical information about him, can be found by clicking on this site’s category “Photographer: Marsh”.
