This uncommon vintage real photo postcard features French singer, dancer and entertainer, Marcelle Lender (1862-1926). Lender was also famous for her modelling in paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Lender began dancing at age sixteen and quickly escalated her fame by performing at the Theatre des Varietes in Paris, France. Lender was the model for several works by Lautrec. Her most notable appearance in his paintings was of her dancing the Bolero, in full costume, during an 1895 performance of “Chilperic”. That painting is today in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This postcard portrait of Miss Lender was taken by the famed Reutlinger studio. This vintage real photo postcard features French opera singer and actress, Ellen Baxone (1881-1964). She began her theatrical career as an operetta and comic opera singer in 1901. She began performing at the Moulin-Rouge in 1903. She performed in many stage productions and also in one short film in 1917. She married Ivo Radonich in 1918, although she had a son by him in 1908.. He was an officer in the cavalry of the Montenegrin army and cousin to both the king of Montenegro and the king of Italy. Upon her marriage, she ended her theatrical career. Their marriage lasted about two years. This postcard close-up portrait of Miss Baxone shows her beauty. The photograph was taken by Leopold Reutlinger. This vintage real photo postcard features an actress playing the role of “Chrysis” in the opera “Aphrodite”. The opera is based on the French novel, “Aphrodite : Ancient Morals”, by Pierre Louys. The story is set in Alexandria and tells the story of Chrysis, a courtesan, and the sculptor Demetrios. Chrysis is beautiful and she knows it. She uses her beauty and skill to win the devotion and subservience of men. All the women in town worship Demetrios. He actually preferred his statue of the goddess Aphrodite, over his lover and the other women in town. There is only one woman in town who is not interested in Demetrios. The story goes on from there. The photograph of Chrysis seen on this postcard, was taken by the celebrated photographer, Leopold Reutlinger. He photographed many actresses and beautiful models. The Reutlinger studio was located in Paris, and was highly esteemed. Printed near the top of the postcard are the words “Union Postale Universelle”. The Universal Postal Union was established by the Treaty of Bern (1874) and it’s mission was to coordinates postal policies between member nations. The Union still exists today and is a specialized agency of the United Nations. This postcard is color tinted and is part of a series (no.2239). SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features the beautiful French theatre actress, Yvonne Garrick (1878-?). She performed at the “Theatre de L’Odeon” and the “Comedie-Francaise” in Paris. During the World War I years, she appeared at the “Theatre Francais” in New York City. The IDBD reports that she performed on Broadway in two productions; “Lets Go” (1918) and “Musk” (1920). The magazine, “Sketch: A Journal of Art and Actuality” (1902) published a glowing article about Mlle. Garrick. The writer stated that no artist had made such a “positive hurricane progress” in the French theatrical world as Yvonne Garrick of the O’Deon. The critic also stated that he had recently seen Garrick in a play and her performance reminded him of the early days of Sarah Bernhardt. Although thewriter admits that she may not be the second coming of Mlle. Bernhardt; he believes that Garrick will make a world wide reputation. He continues to write that he has seen no young actress so “natural and so “sympathetic”. The New York Times (1908) published a review for the play “Jeanne Qui Rit” in which Mlle. Garrick played a starring role. The article states that Yvonne Garrick was a young actress who has attracted much attention at the Comedy-Francaise. She was reported to have received a hearty reception and was “repeatedly recalled” (cheered for an encore). A New York Times (1918) article records Mlle. Garrick’s debut in a New York farcical comedy “Mon Ami Teddy”. In the piece she is described as a “comely and charming actress who proves a most welcome recruit from the Paris stage”.
Postcard 1 provides a portrait of Mlle. Garrick during the time she was appearing at the Comedie-Francaise. The photograph was taken by Henri Manuel (1874-1947). In 1900, Manuel opened a portrait studio in Paris with his brother Gaston. He quickly became renowned for his portraits of politicians, artists, and athletes. His images were used by news agencies . His studio became the largest studio in Paris and it attracted many young photographers who sharpened their skills there. In 1925 the brothers expended their business to include fashion photography. They worked for such designers as Chanel, Patou, and Lanvin. The studio shut down during World War II and many of their photographic plates were destroyed. This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty costumed performer. She is a dancer or actress or both. The woman is beautifully dressed. Note her wasp-like waist and her lovely kerchief. The photographer of this unidentified performer’s portrait was Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. The postcard was published by NPG as part of a series (No.551/2). Postcard 1 features French singer, film and theater actress, Jane Dirys (1886-1922) of the Belle Epoque. She made her stage debut in 1906. In 1911, she married Paul Iribe (1883-1935), a well known French Illustrator and decorative arts designer. During the 1920’s he worked in Hollywood. He and Coco Chanel had an affair from 1931 until his death. Dirys’s marriage to Iribe lasted about seven years. They divorced in 1918. Tragically, Jane Dirys died at a young age. These vintage real photo postcards feature Lillian Greuze (1890-1950), a French model, and actress of the stage and screen. She was a protege of Sarah Bernhardt. She performed at New York’s French Theatre. Her debut in New York was in 1915. Greuze was one of many French performers recruited to perform at the French Theatre. When she performed there in “Mademoiselle Josette Ma Femme” (1915), one reviewer praised her playful acting quality, and cited her “gaminerie”. My vocabulary does not include the word “gaminerie” so I looked up it’s meaning. According to Wikipedia, “gaminerie” is defined as “a slim, elegant young woman who is, or is perceived to, mischievous, teasing or sexually appealing”. Greuze also had a film career. She appeared in “The Recoil” (1917). The IMDb reports that she appeared in nine films between 1910 and 1935. Most of her roles were in European films. Greuze was an active philanthropist. While on a cruise in 1915, she agreed to kiss a man who had offered to donate two hundred dollars to a charity for orphans she was soliciting for. During World War I, Greuze was a volunteer with the Red Cross at the French front (1917). During the war, she also worked as a nurse at a hospital in Neuilly, France. –

–Postcard 3 finds Lillian Greuze playing Diablo. She is beautifully dressed in a pink checkered dress and a hat covered with pink flowers. It is difficult to imagine her playing the game in her fancy clothes. In the top left hand corner of this postcard is the word “Gymnase”. This word probably refers to Théâtre du Gymnase Marie-Bell in Paris, formerly Gymnase-Dramatique. The Gymnase is a historic theatre. This postcard was published by Reutlinger of Paris and is part of a series (no.2275). The postmark indicates that the card was mailed in 1908. The postcard has a French stamp on it’s front side. This vintage real photo postcard features French stage and film actress, Huguette Duflos (1887-1982). She was married to actor Raphael Duflose from 1910 through 1928. Her early career was with the Comedie Francaise and she later pursued a film career. In 1931 she was the victim of an assault by a Frenchwoman. Her injuries were treated by noted psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The IMDb credits Duflos with 43 film appearances between 1914 and 1962. A 1926 article in the New York Times describes how Duflos, “the sweetest girl on the French stage”, unexpectedly resigned from the Comedie Francaise and pursued other venues. This action violated her contract and she faced the threat of financial punishment for the rest of her career. The article asserts that Duflos was the most popular beauty on France’s stages and in addition, she was also admired by American audiences. This photo of Miss Duflos was taken by the noted photographic Reutlinger studio. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer and is part of the “Les Vedettes de Cinema” (The Stars of Film) series (No.16). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
