This vintage real photo postcard features American stage and silent and sound film actress, Maude Fealy (1883-1971). Maude was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her mother was an actress and acting coach. After her mother remarried, she moved to Colorado where Maude called home for much of her life. She made her stage debut at the age of three. she performed at the Elitch Theater numerous times during her childhood. In 1905 she began to be the featured actress in a number of productions. She worked alongside stock player Cecil B DeMille and the pair developed a friendship that lasted many decades. In fact, he cast her in his film “The Ten Commandments” (1956). This postcard illustrates Miss Fealy’s beauty. Her photo postcards were very popular and collectable during her era, as well as today. 

Postcard 1 is uncommon. The card was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.1965J), The postcard is of British origin. Note that this postcard is hand tinted and postmarked in Dublin (1906). The card has an interesting message. The writer proclaims “What an innocent face this girl has. Poor thing”. Since when is “innocence” something to pity? (SOLD)

Postcard 8 was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.1861M), This particular card is rare. The postcard has a 1905 postmark and is of British origin.  (SOLD)

Postcard 9 has a notable message. The card was written from a man to a woman. The last line of the gentleman’s note states “You ought to be hit in the face with a fish”. He topped it off by drawing a fish at the end of the sentence. He certainly must have been joking but the comment is quite odd by today’s standards. The card was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.1965D). (SOLD)

Postcard 12 is uncommon and the card was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.198 V)), The message on this postcard is an Easter greeting.

Postcard 13 demonstrates that Miss Fealy was fashionable and quite beautiful. Her photo postcards were very popular and collectable during her era, as well as today. This card has a 1904 postmark.It was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.198D),  (SOLD)

Postcard 14 was published by J. Beagles 7 Co. as part of a series (no.365H). Miss Fealy’s photo portrait was taken by esteemed celebrity photographers, W & D Downey.  The uncommon postcard is of British origin. (SOLD)

Postcard 15 was published by P. F. B. as part of a series (no.4037). P. F. B. is likely a Berlin firm named Paul Finkenrath. However, a second Berlin company named Paul Fink went by the inititials PFB which certainly creates some confusion among postcard collectors. This vintage postcard is uncommon. (SOLD)

Postcard 17 is rare. The postcard offers a view of Miss Fealy petting a large dog. It appears to be some type of hound. Maude is flashing a pretty smile and is wearing a feathered hat and a plaid dress and jacket. The card was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no.1965A), The postcard is of British origin. MISS GAYNOR ROWLANDS : ENGLISH STAGE ACTRESS; SINGER, AND DANCER

These vintage real photo postcards feature English actress, singer, and dancer, Gaynor Rowlands (1883-1906). She carried the nickname of “The Nightingale of Wales”. She started her career in Empire Theatres’s Ballet. Upon graduation, she joined the company chorus line of George Edwarde’s Gaiety Theatre. She toured India in 1901/02. She quickly became a star and she became the most photographed of the “Gaiety Girls”. She was a popular subject of photo postcards and theatre magazine articles. Rowland’s life was cut short when she died of heart failure at the age of twenty-three after surgery for appendicitis. Eight portraits of Gaynor are in England’s National Portrait Gallery. The IMDb reports that she has one film in her filmography. lt was released in 1905.

Postcard 1 is a pretty portrait of Miss Rowlands that was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons as part of the Glosso Postcard Series (No. 5709) and the “Celebrities of the Stage Series”. The writer of this postcard used only one word to describe Gaynor. That word is “Lovely”. There is no doubt about the date that this postcard was written and sent. Not only does the postmark reveal that this card was mailed in 1905, but the writer wrote the same date on the front of the postcard. The card was mailed from Hounslow, a borough of London. This postcard is in good condition (see scans).

Postcard 2 is a portrait postcard that was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No. 1615U). Note Miss Rowland’s necklace and earrings. The message on this card offers Christmas greetings. The postcard was postmarked on Christmas day in 1908. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans). (SOLD)

Postcard 3 was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.1887 T). Embedded in the image is the logo for “Play Pictorial”. The postcard was posted with a British stamp and a postmark from 1906. The card is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 1) features Irish actress, singer, and dancer, Alice Russon. She acted in musical comedies and silent films. Russon’s stage work included “The Girl from Kay’s” (1904), “Cinderella” (1907), and “The Arcadians” (1911). In 1906, she appeared in a variety show headlined by Will Rogers. In 1912 and 1913, she performed in Australia. According to IMDb, Russon appeared in three British silent films including “Democracy” (1918) and “All Men are Liars” (1919). Russon was married to actor, Vernon Davidson. It is reported that she was an amateur photographer. This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of the Rotary Photographic Series (No. 4139 B). The card has a postmark from Cambridge, England (dated 1908). The message on the reverse of the card, like today’s text messages, is short and sweet. The writer simply writes “Getting on alright”.  (SOLD)

Postcard 3 was published by Philco as part of a series (No. 3437 D). Russon’s photograph was taken by Dover Street Studios. The card has a postmark dated 1908. The message on the reverse of the card, states that the writer attended the theatre the night before writing. She reports that she saw actress, Marie Studholme and that Miss Studholme was “very good, pretty and just as nice as she looks on postcards”. This postcard is in good condition (see scans).

LYDIA WEST : PRETTY BRITISH STAGE ACTRESS : 1904 AND 1907

These vintage real photo postcards feature theatre actress, Lydia West. I believe she is British but I am unable to confirm her nationality. In fact, I could find little information about this pretty stage performer. I was able to locate a photograph of Miss West, in costume for her performance in the musical comedy, “Florodoro” (1899). The photo appeared in the theatre magazine, “Play Pictorial”. Research also discovered a Play Program for a play in which West was part of the cast. She played one of twelve butterflies in “My Darling” (1907). The play was co-written by actor, Seymour Hicks, and was produced at the Hicks Theatre. Marie Studholme, a very well known stage actress was in the production.

Postcard 1 was published by Rafael Tuck & Sons. The card was part of the “Celebrities of the Stage” series (no. G 1028). The photo studio that produced West’s portrait was Johnston & Hoffmann. The postcard is in fair condition (see scans) and is priced accordingly. This postcard’s postmark reveals that the card was mailed in 1907.   SOLD

Postcard 2 This postcard was published by Rafael Tuck & Sons. The card was part of the “Celebrities of the Stage” series (683). The photo studio that produced West’s portrait was Biograph Photo. The card is hand colored. The postcard is in good condition (see scans). This postcard’s postmark reveals that the card was mailed in 1904.

LILLIAN BURNS : EARLY AMERICAN FILM ACTRESS AND ACTING COACH : RAPHAEL TUCK RPPC

Postcard 1 features pretty film actress Lillian Burns (1903-1998). Burns was an American stage actress hailing from Illinois. She is most known for performing in “A  Florida Enchantment” (1914), “The Goddess” (1915), and “The Shop Girl” (1916). She was an acting coach for MGM from 1937 until the early 1960’s. Her filmography includes 41 credits from 1912 through 1916. This photograph was taken by celebrity photographer Lallie Charles (1869-1919). She and her sister, Rita Martin, were the most commercially successful female photographers of their time. The pair were from Ireland. They took photographs of many of celebrities of their era. This photograph was published by Raphael Tuck as part of a series (no.T825). The series was entitled “Celebrities of the Stage”. This postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

Postcard 2 was also taken by Lallie Charles . This photograph was published by Rapid Photo Co. as part of a series (no.4228).The card was postmarked in 1908.

MABEL RUSSELL BRITISH ACTRESS AND THIRD FEMALE MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

These vintage real photo postcards feature actress Miss Mabel Russell (1886-1951). She was also known as Mrs Hilton Philipson when off the stage. Russell was a British actor and politician. She was a gaiety girl and starred in many London plays. She left acting to marry politician, Hilton Philipson, in 1917. Mabel caught the political bug and became the third woman to take a seat in the House of Commons. She was quiet on the floor of the house but was active behind the scenes. One of her bills led to the 1927 Nursing Home Registration Act. After retiring in 1929, she returned to acting for a brief period by left the theatre to focus on her family. 

Postcard 1 was published by Tucks as part of the “Celebrities of the Stage” series (No.T 718). Miss Russell’s photo portrait was taken by Dover Street Studios. This postcard was postmarked in 1907. (SOLD) 

Postcard 2 captures Miss Russell playing “Forbidden Fruit” in the Chinese Comic Opera “See See” (1906). The production ran in London’s Prince of Wales Theatre for 330 performances. This postcard was published by Tucks as part of the “Celebrities of the Stage” series (No.T 713). Miss Russell’s photo portrait was taken by Dover Street Studios. Postcard 3 captures Miss Russell in her role in “Jack and Jill”. The “Bystander” magazine reported her appearance in that production in 1907, the same year as the card is postmarked. The actress was about 21 years old when this postcard photo was taken. The postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.4839R). (SOLD)

SYNAGOGUE : BALTIMORE : EUTAW PLACE : RAPHAEL TUCK : VINTAGE POSTCARD

This vintage postcard features an early Synagogue located in Baltimore, Maryland. The temple was on Eutaw Place. A street sign bearing the name “Eutaw Place” can be seen near the right edge of the image. The temple was built in 1892 to serve the German Jewish immigrants living in Baltimore. The synagogue seated 2,200 people. This postcard was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons as part of a series (no.1016).The card has a crease on it’s bottom left hand corner.  Postcard 1 features a portrait of beautiful English stage actress Nina Sevening (1885-1958). She was 22 years old at the time of this photo. Miss Sevening began her stage career as a child in 1894. She became a major theater actress, singer, and light comedienne. Some of her credits include “Three Little Maids” (1903), “The Merry Widow” (1907), and Peter Pan (1913). Nina Sevening retired from the stage in 1917. The postcard image of Miss Sevening, seen in Postcard 1 is uncommon. It was produced by London’s Philco Publishing Company as part of a series (no. 3390A). The message on the postcard is timeless. The writer, who was on vacation, apologizes for not writing sooner. The postcard was postmarked in Coventry, England in 1907.  SOLD

Postcard 2 features another beautiful image of the 20 year-old Miss Sevening. She is wearing a large hat which can be best described as “busy”. Once again, Philco is the publisher and the card is part of a series (no. 3050 B). The photographer is Bassano  (1829 –1913). He was a leading royal and high society photographer in Victorian London. The postmark on the postcard is from Burton on Trent and is dated 1905. The writer of Postcard 2 starts the message with a thank you for a “pretty postcard” that was received from the addressee (Gladys). The writer also reports on the condition of someone who was fighting “bronchial pneumonia”.  SOLD

Postcard 3 was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons as part of the “Celebrities of the Stage” series (No.T 1300). Raphael Tuck and his wife started their photography business in 1866 in London. Their store sold pictures, greeting cards, and in time, postcards. Their success came from the sale of postcards during the late 1890’s and early 1900’s.Three of Tuck’s four sons participated in the business. Miss Sevening’s photograph was taken by the Dover Street Studios. The studio was active between circa 1906 and circa 1912. The gallery specialized in taking theatrical portraits and was located in London, England. This postcard is received its postmark in 1911.  SOLD

JOSEPHINE CASABONI : STAR BALLET DANCER : PHOTOGRAPHED BY LYD SAWYER

This vintage real photo postcard features Miss Josephine “Cassy” Casaboni, an esteemed principal ballet dancer. The photographer of this image is Lyd Sawyer. Edward Lyddel Sawyer (1856-1927) was a British photographer. At the age of sixteen, he was responsible for the work of a busy photography studio in Newcastle. His father was a portrait painter and photographer. In 1885, he opened a portrait studio with his two brothers. In 1895, he opened a portrait studio on Regent Street, in London. He was a founding member of “The Linked Ring”, a British photographic society that advocated viewing photography as a fine art, rather than exclusively as a science or commercial venture. Twelve of Sawyer’s photos can be found in Great Britain’s National Portrait Gallery. He is considered a talented photographer and an important figure in the history of photography. This postcard was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons. The card is part of the “Stage Favourites” series (no.5015). This photograph of Miss Casaboni captures the dancer in her role in “The Red Shoes”, which appeared at London’s Alhambra Theatre in 1899. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN BY RAPHAEL TUCK (ARTISTES AMERICANES, 1903)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a finely dressed pretty young woman. This beautiful postcard was published in 1903 by Raphael Tuck (Paris) as part of a six card series (Serie 138) entitled “Artistes Americaines”. I have seen three other postcards from the series, and this one, in my opinion, is the nicest. Note the Tuck logo at the bottom left hand corner of the image. This photograph was taken by New York City celebrity photographer Jacob Schloss. SOLD
