There is black fabric under the pin. Is she in mourning? The color of her blouse blends in perfectly with the color of the background of the photograph. This vintage real photo postcard features a barber giving a man a haircut. The gentleman having his hair cut is sitting in an old time barber chair and is smoking a cigarette or cigar. The barber is performing his work in a tent rather than in a barber shop. Note the canvas walls and the tent poles. I would love to know the story that goes along with this image. This vintage real photo postcard features a view of domestic and family life in the 1913 United States. I hypothesize that the women in this photograph are a mother and her two daughters. The mom and one of her daughters is sewing, while the second daughter is reading a book. Note the antique bench that the reading daughter is sitting on. This vintage postcard’s CYKO stamp box is consistent with the 1913 notation written on the card. The original owner of this postcard identified two women in the portrait, but not herself. The id’d women are Dagmar Miller and Marie Petersen. The location is noted as Askov, Minnesota. The town is located on the middle of the eastern border of the state. Askov was settled primarily by Danish immigrants. Interestingly, the name “Dagmar” is of Scandanavian origin. The 2010 census identified 364 residents of Askov. SOLD

The logo on the reverse of the card labels Mr Calvert as the “Postcard Man”. The gallery was located in Portland, Oregon. The stamp box on this postcard reveals that it was published by Cyko. (SOLD)

She is nicely dressed, wearing a checkered skirt and a light colored blouse with a lace collar. She posed for her portrait at the Mueller Studio in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. This vintage real photo postcard (RPPC) features a smiling couple posing in a photographic studio’s faux garden. Note the leaves affixed to the wall behind them. This couple seems very happy together but they apparently didn’t maintain their marital harmony because they ultimately got divorced. One hopes that the whip that the woman is holding had nothing to do with their marital discord. The woman’s name in this photograph is Grace McBurney. Her name is written on the reverse of the postcard, undoubtedly by one of her relatives. Research reveals that Grace R. McBurney (1893-1969) was born in Oregon and married at the age of 19 to William H. McBurney who worked as a “typewriter representative”, which I assume means he sold typewriters. The couple had at least five children: Virginia D.(born around 1914), Marguerite F. (1919-1999), Wilma (born around 1920), William (1923-1981), and Carl Morton (1928-2007). Perusal of US census data reveals that the couple were divorced sometime between 1930 and 1940. It appears that Grace lived her entire adult life in Portland, Oregon. She is buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland. Preliminary research yielded little information about her husband. This photo postcard was produced by the Mazrograph Studio in Portland. Mazrograph was the process Calvert used to produce the photo postcards quickly. The studio’s stamp can be seen on the reverse of the postcard. The stamp also mentions that the photo production process took only ten minutes.The postcard paper was produced by Cyko sometime between 1906 and 1915. Charles E. (Cal) Calvert operated his studio at Sixth and Ankeny from 1906 through 1930. In 1907, with the opening of Council Crest Amusement Park, he operated a studio and postcard stand on it’s grounds. He also ran a studio at the Washington Street entrance to Portland’s City Park in 1910. Cal was known for his use of rustic props and for his creativity. One of his sets involved subjects appearing as if they were flying an airplane over the city of Portland. A postcard employing this setting is part of a collection at the Portland Art Museum. This RPPC was taken in a “10 Minute Photo Gallery”. The reverse of the card advertises “Cal Calvert, Postcard Man”. As a side note, there was also a Calvert’s Studio across from Oregon City’s Southern Pacific Depot but it was run by Harry Calvert and his wife Alvilda. Harry was not related to Cal Calvert. Harry’s studio operated from 1915 through 1925. This vintage real photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

The star of the cast of six characters seen in this vintage real photo postcard, is a cow. This is not an ordinary cow. Although this is not a photograph of Elsie the Cow, or Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow; the cow seen in this image is a prize winning cow. Standing behind the cow are three well dressed men and two women. Judging by an abundance of smiles, all five people seem pretty happy. Behind the row of people is a small house, possibly a farm house. Speculating about the story behind this picture, I formulate the following hypothesis. I believe that our bovine friend has just won a prize for being superior to other cows, one way or another. The gentleman seen by the champion cow’s head, appears to be wearing a flower and an award ribbon by his lapel. When I looked at a close-up view of this cow, I noticed that it had horns. I began to think that this cow is actually a bull. However, some quick research revealed that female cows are born with horns. I was udderly surprised to learn this fact. This postcard was published by Cyko. The stamp box indicates that it dates to the time period between 1904 and 1920. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
