RISQUE PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN PARTIALLY DRESSED

This vintage photograph features a pretty young woman in a risque pose and wearing risque clothing. She is wearing a hat, gloves, and is holding a purse. She seems to be going somewhere but she forgot to finish getting dressed. The previous owner of this photograph thought the photographer of the image may have been the Biederer studio. I have no supporting evidence confirming his hypotheses. The Biederer brothers were major figures in photography so their story is worth telling. The studio was operated by Jacpues Biederer (1887-1942) and his brother Charles Biederer (1892-1942) during the Art deco era. Their studio was in Paris, France. Their photographs of the 1920’s and 1930’s included artistic nudes and sexual fetish studies. Their topics included erotic corporal punishment, costumed role play and images of bondage. Their postcards were signed as “JB” “B” ,”Ostra”, or a question mark in a triangle.  When Germany occupied France during World War ll, the Nazis sent the brothers to a concentration camp (Auschwitz-Birkenau). Their crime was their Judaism. Their punishment was death. This vintage photo measures about 3 3/8″ x 5 3/8″ and is in very good condition.

MISS MARJORIE VILLIS : RISQUE PORTRAIT OF A STRIKINGLY PRETTY BRITISH ACTRESS

This vintage real photo postcard portrait feature British silent film actress, Marjorie Villis (1891-1981). Miss Villis is quite pretty and has a wonderful smile. This photograph captures her in a risque pose and a risque costume. What an amazing elaborate and busy costume. When I first saw this image, I immediately became motivated to find information about this provocative actress. I met little success in learning about Marjorie Villis. Photographs of her appear to be uncommon, and I could not find the postcard above anywhere online. I did learn that she sat for seven postcard portraits that can be found in the UK’s National Portrait Gallery, All of the portraits were taken by celebrated photographer, Alexander Bassano. The IMDb credits Villis with 15 film roles between 1915 and 1922. Villis was most noted for her roles in “The Rugged Path (1918), “A Romany Lass (1918)”, and  “Brenda of the Barge (1920). She had a relatively short career. I wonder why her career ended so abruptly? The first talkie feature film did not get released until 1927, so we know that, unlike many other silent film stars, Villis was not shut out of the film industry because of an unsuitable voice or foreign accent. This postcard was published by J. Beagles & Company (London)  as part of a series (no.142 J). The wonderful portrait of Miss Villis was taken by S. Ward. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans)

PORTRAIT OF A DECORATED EUROPEAN SOLDIER, ARMED WITH A SWORD, AND STANDING IN A GARDEN

I wish I knew more about this soldier. This vintage snap shot features a European military man. My first guess is that he is a member of the French or Belgian army. I am hypothesizing that he is an officer. The evidence of his higher rank is the sword that he is carrying.  The gentleman is wearing three medals. The number 1554 appears on his hat and on his collar. Is that the number of his regiment? The soldier appears to be standing in a manicured garden. This vintage photo measures about 3 1/2″ x 4 5/8″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY BABY IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

otto otto 1

A very cute little girl poses for her photograph at the studio of Wilhelm Otto in Vienna, Austria. This baby has personality galore. She is sitting on a fur covered chair and wearing a large bow in her hair. Her large eyes are wide open and she seems to be intelligently taking in all that is happening in the room in front of her. This cabinet card photograph is in good condition. Note the weak bottom right corner. The corner of the card is complete but apparently was bent sometime in the past and may be fragile (see scans). The middle of the reverse of the cabinet card has residue from it’s former life in a photograph album.   (SOLD)

ATTRACTIVE COUPLE IN WEST POINT, MISSISSIPPI (NOTE THE WOMAN’S PINCE NEZ)

This vintage photograph features an attractive and well dressed young couple. Perhaps this photo is a wedding picture. The couple are wearing formal clothing and the woman is flashing a ring on the ring finger of her left hand. The gentleman is wearing a wide collar as well as cuff links. The woman has what appears to be a tied loose cord hanging loosely from her waist. I wonder what the purpose is of the cord. Is it just for fashion sake? The woman is also wearing a pince nez, a style of glasses popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The glasses stay on the wearers face by pinching the bridge of their nose. The glasses have no earpieces. An inscription, lightly written in pencil on the reverse of the photograph provides us with some information about the photograph. The photo was taken in 1903 or 1904. The studio was located in West Point, Mississippi. It is situated in the Northeast section of the state. In 1909, President William Taft visited West Point, Mississippi and made some remarks as he stood on the platform of the last train car. This vintage photograph measures about 6″ x *8″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF TWO TOUGH LOOKING SOLDIERS (RUSSIAN? WORLD WAR II?)

cc stein 5 This photograph is enigmatic. Who are these soldiers? What nation’s army do they serve in? I know that a number of Russian Army helmets have similar stars. What do the rectangular insignias mean that appear on both sides of the helmet’s star? What is the translation of the inscription on the reverse of the photo and what language is it written in? Note the men’s weapons slung over their shoulders. This photograph measures approximately 2 1/4″ x 3 3/4″ and appears to have been trimmed, The photo is in good condition (see scans).

FIVE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG SIBLINGS IN DUREN, GERMANY

The parents of these five siblings must have been pleased when the photographer, Robert Ophoven, gave them this portrait. The children are beautiful, well dressed, and well posed. All three girls are wearing jewelry and their hair was carefully styled for this portrait. It is also interesting to note the intimacy between the three girls. the middle girl has an arm around the shoulders of one sister while her other arm is being grasped by her other sister. This image was photographed in Duren, Germany.  SOLD
