This vintage snapshot features a man and his truck. This photo has captured a commercial truck with a painted advertising sign. The vehicle is a work truck for Silent Sioux Oil Burner Corp.. The business was located in Orange City, Iowa. Presumably, the warmly dressed gentleman, posed with the truck, is the owner of the company. Note the man’s bow tie and the snow on the ground and on the roof and fender of the truck. It was winter in Iowa when this photograph was taken. A trade catalog from this company is part of the Smithsonian Libraries Trade Literature Collection. The catalog was published in the period between 1900 and 1909 though the company existed beyond those dates.      (SOLD)

A CHAUFFEUR AND A “WOODY WAGON”

A uniformed chauffeur leans against his “woodie” station wagon. Peering out the window is a young woman, possibly, a teenager. An inscription on the reverse of the photo indicates that this snapshot was taken in 1948. The pictured automobile is called a woodie because part of the rear body is made of wood or material that resembles wood. Woodies were  popular in the United States in the 1930’s and 40’s. The wagons were made as versions of sedans as well as station wagons. Some were basic and some of these autos were luxury vehicles. Generally, they were manufactured by third party conversion companies. The last year of production of real wood construction in American station wagons was 1953. From then on, only faux wood was used. The uniformed driver and the thatched roof on the brick building may offer a hint of where this snapshot photo was taken. The previous owner of this image suggested that the photo was taken somewhere in Africa. This snapshot photograph measures about 3 1/2″ x 2 3/8″ and is in very good condition.

TWO VERY ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN EATING ICE CREAM AT A STREET FAIR IN ST ANDRE, FRANCE

This vintage snapshot features two very pretty young women eating ice cream as they stroll down a street in St. Andre, France. It appears that they may be at a street fair. These thin waisted young ladies could be fashion models. Perhaps they are? Note the Vespa motor scooter that is parked behind the woman wearing the solid color dress. That same woman, has a beautiful smile. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the photo was taken in 1957.This snapshot photo measures about 2 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ and is in excellent condition (see scans).

FATHER GIVES DAUGHTER A RIDE ON HIS BIG JOHN DEERE TRACTOR (1948)

Tractor 2019-09-29 at 2.04.05 PM

This vintage snapshot photograph features a farmer and a little girl riding a large John Deere tractor. Beneath the John Deere name printed on the tractor, are the words “Made in USA”. It seems the company took pride in being an American manufacturer. The reverse of the photo has an inscription indicating the farmers name and the year it was taken (1948). Perhaps the child is the farmers daughter or granddaughter. This photograph measures about 4 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ and is in very good condition.

LITTLE GIRL SITTING ON A WINDOW LEDGE WITH MOM STANDING BEHIND HER “DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME BOYS AND GIRLS!”

This vintage snapshot photograph features a little girl sitting on a window ledge. Her mother is standing behind her squinting out the window. I think the child is in a dangerous position. She could easily fall out of the window, even if her mother is holding her. This photograph was taken in Europe by an amateur photographer. The photographer took a creative, but dangerous, photo. This snapshot measures about 2 3/8″ x 3 3/8″ and is in fair condition. It has no tears or pinholes but it is worn (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A DECORATED EUROPEAN SOLDIER, ARMED WITH A SWORD, AND STANDING IN A GARDEN

I wish I knew more about this soldier. This vintage snap shot features a European military man. My first guess is that he is a member of the French or Belgian army. I am hypothesizing that he is an officer. The evidence of his higher rank is the sword that he is carrying.  The gentleman is wearing three medals. The number 1554 appears on his hat and on his collar. Is that the number of his regiment? The soldier appears to be standing in a manicured garden. This vintage photo measures about 3 1/2″ x 4 5/8″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

A MOTHER AND HER TWO CHILDREN POSE IN FRONT OF A HOUSE AND ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILES

family 3 snapshot 3

family 3 snapshot 4 This vintage snapshot features a mother and her two young children posing in the front yard of a house. Note that mom is wearing a pair of glasses and that the boy is barefoot. The threesome are plainly dressed. The little boy looks like he is a “rough and tumble” kind of kid. Behind the family are two old automobiles and what appears to be a shed, or barn. Further behind the family, I believe there is a man bending down as if to pick up something up off the grass. This vintage photograph measures about 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ and is in very good condition.

A UNIFORMED SOLDIER AND TWO LAMBS – A STUDY IN CONTRAST

lamb soldier

lamb soldier 2 A uniformed soldier sits against a fence and he is holding two adorable lambs on his lap. This is a study in contrast. A military warrior represents battle and lethality, while the young lambs represent peace and calm. Before anyone gets “up in arms”, I want to state that I know that soldiers can represent peace and protection. Note the soldier’s high boots. They appear to be for weather protection rather than for long marches. This snapshot photograph measures about 2 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ and is in very good condition.
