PORTRAIT OF A FASHIONABLE CURLY HAIRED YOUNG CHILD IN NEW YORK CITY

This photograph of a young child is from the studio of Professor David Ehrlich of New York City. The child is beautifully dressed and is holding a toy in his left hand and standing beside a chair with a toy ball on the seat. A sketch of Prof. Ehrlich and a sketch of his studio can be found on the reverse of the photograph (see scan below). The author of the blog, “Cabinet Card Photographers”, has researched Professor Ehrlich. It was found that Mr. Ehrlich had a photo studio at 160 East 66th Street between 1892 and 1902. In 1902, he appears to have moved his studio to 157 East 75th Street. He made a number of moves after that. He is last listed as a photographer in a 1913 business directory. He then switched professions and became a music teacher. The Professor must have possessed a strong drive to teach. While a photographer, he gave photography lessons to the public. It seems that he truly earned the title of “Professor”. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition.

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL WEARING TRADITIONAL CLOTHING (PORTUGAL / BRAZIL)

This vintage photograph features a beautiful young Portuguese or Brazilian girl wearing traditional clothing. Her dress is very detailed and pretty. She is well accessorized. Her jewelry includes a number of necklaces and a ring. I find her head covering fascinating and unusual. The writing on the reverse of this photograph is Portuguese. It is written that this girl’s name is “Maria Amelia Porto” and that the photo was taken in either 1910 or 1916. An illegibility issue does not allow distinguishing which of the two years are written. This lovely portrait has been trimmed and is in very good condition (see scans).

WORLD WAR 1 MEDICS : A GROUP PORTRAIT

I could really use some help here. Who are these men? Which branch of the military are they from? What nation’s armed services do they serve in? The previous owner of this vintage real photo postcard stated that the men seen in this image are a group of World War 1 medics. I can not confirm his statement, but it is true, that the soldier sitting in the middle of the bottom row, has red cross patches on both of his upper sleeves. At least this man, seems to be in a medical unit. Another clue might be the observation that the gentleman, third from the left in the top row, appears to be wearing a World War 1 era uniform. Speaking of uniforms, why is it that all eight of the men wearing badges on their hats, have different badges. These men’s uniforms are certainly not uniform. I am eager to hear cabinet card gallery visitors opinions about the identity of this military group. This postcard is postally unused, has excellent clarity, and is in very good condition (see scans).

POSTCARD 2

                                                                                 POSTCARD 2 (CLOSE-UP)

Postcard 2  features German silent film actress, Grete Weixler (1900-1921). She appears to be quite young in this photograph; possibly in her teenage years. Grete has the appearance of a cute and vivacious young woman. She was the younger sister of actress Dorrit Weixler (1892-1916). Her grandfather was a successful actor in Hungary. She made her film debut in 1915 in a film directed by Franz Hofer, who was married to her sister Dorrit. In an interview, Grete described the different type of roles that she played in comparison to her sister. She states that Dorrit specialized in playing child-like young woman who “know nothing but know everything”. She added that Dorritt had “a shade of humor”. On the other hand, Grete asserts that she herself was drawn to more “serious” roles. Dorrit had a tragic life. She became addicted to morphine and died from suicide in 1916. In addition to acting in film, Grete was also a theatre actress. Her last film was the “The Daughter of the Seduced”. The IMDb reports that Grete appeared in 37 films between 1915 through 1921. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. A number of postcard publishing companies joined the cartel in an effort to stave off the effect of competition on the pricing of postcards. This postcard is part of a series (no. 121/2). The logo for the motion picture company “Film Sterne” can be seen in the lower left hand corner of the postcard. The photo studio that took this photograph was Becker & Maas. The firm was located in Berlin, Germany. This portrait postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
