TWO PRETTY SISTERS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM : VALENTINE AND MADELEINE FALCON

This carte de visite portrait features two pretty young women posing for their photograph at the Kriegsmann studio in Anvers, Belgium. These women are extremely likely to be sisters. They have similar faces and hairstyles. The women are wearing, what looks to be, spring or summer dresses. They are also wearing serious expressions. In fact, the woman on the right, appears dour. Anvers, the studio location, is also known as Antwerp. The city dates back to the middle ages. It is a port city and has an international reputation for it’s diamond trade. The young women in this photograph are identified by an inscription on the reverse of the cdv. they are Valentine and Madeleine Falcon.  (SOLD)

LUCY JOUSSET : PRETTY STAGE AND FILM ACTRESS (PORTRAIT BY LEOPOLD REUTLINGER)

This vintage real  photo postcard features stage and film actress Lucy Jousset (1884-1914). She is beautifully dressed. Note her beaded necklace and large hat. She also has a feathered wrap partially around her shoulders. Jousset’s IMDb filmography includes three films, all produced in 1914. Unfortunately, she lived a short life, dying at the young age of thirty years old. The cause of her death and additional biographical details were not determined in my preliminary research. Miss Jousset’s portrait was taken by celebrated theatrical photographer, Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, France. This postcard was published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France, as part of a series (no 14-65). The postcard is postmarked in Arlon, Belgium (1907.) PORTRAIT OF THREE WELL DRESSED AND HANDSOME YOUNG MEN (1912)

This vintage real photo postcard features three handsome mustachioed young men. All of the men are wearing suits. Content on the reverse of the photograph reveals that the photograph was taken in 1912. The three gentlemen are identified by last name on the verso of the postcard. The photographer is identified as J. Terhell and his/her studio was located in Liege, Belgium. Liege is located along the Meuse River in the Wallonia region. The Wallonia area is French-speaking. The city is an important commercial and cultural hub. This photo postcard is in good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features a beautiful young woman holding a pretty black cat. Both the woman and the cat have hypnotic eyes. The postcard was published by PC Paris as part of a series (no. 617). The P. C. logo is an abbreviation for Papeteries de Levallois-Clichy. The firm published a variety of real photo postcard topics including portraits of women, nudes, views, and holiday cards. This cabinet card portrait features a pretty young woman posing for her portrait at the Yvan Crewell studio, in Antwerp, Belgium. The woman is wearing a pretty checkered dress. Her belt and collar are wonderful accents. She is wearing gloves and holding a bouquet of flowers. Writing on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the photo was taken in 1895. PRETTY EDWARDIAN YOUNG WOMAN AND HER WHIMSICAL HAT

This vintage real photo postcard features a beautiful young woman and her whimsical hat. She is looking over her shoulder and looking coyly at the photographer. The postcard was published by Paul Finkenrath, the Berlin postcard publishing and printing business. It is part of a series. (no. 1018). The Paul Finkenroth company made quality photo postcards and the company was heavily oriented toward export. They were known to be responsive to printing postcards that they’re customers desired over time. They were quite profitable but closed in 1911 when protective tariffs interfered with their business. The company was established by Paul Finkenrath and Paul Grasnick in 1897. The partnership lasted about a year and then Grasnick left to start his own lithography studio. The postmark on this postcard indicates that it was stamped in Kortrijk, a Belgian city in the Flemish province of West Flanders. It was postmarked in 1916 and has a Belgian stamp.

BEAUTIFUL FRENCH PERFORMER: BLEUETTE D’ARTOIS

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty French performer Bleuette D’Artois. She is beautifully dressed. In fact, she appeared in a postcard series called “Queens of Fashion”. The postcard was published by E.L.D. (E. Le Delay), a company located in Paris, France. The postcard is part of a series (no. 4264). The postmark is dated 1918 and the postcard was postmarked in Merbes-le-Château, Belgium. The postcard has a Belgian stamp.

 

BELGIAN STAGE AND FILM ACTRESS: JANE MARNAC

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty Belgian stage and film actress, Jane Marnac (1892-1976). She appeared in dozens of parts on stage and sang in numerous operettas. She is well known for appearing in “Au temps des valses ” (1930), a play by Noel Coward that played at the Apollo Theater. She is also remembered for her role in “The Darling of Paris” (1931). Wikipedia provides a list of twenty of her play appearances (1912-1938) and notes that it is an incomplete list.  Wikipedia also lists six films (1911-1931) in which Marnac made appearances.  In regard to her personal life, she was born in Brussels, Belgium. She married an English officer in 1927. This postcard was published by K.F. (Kunzli Freres) of Paris, France and is part of a series (no. 2315). The company was one of the largest pioneer postcard publishing houses. The company was established in 1874. It had offices in Zurich and Paris. Beginning 1898, it became known for publishing postcard maps throughout Europe. The photographer who took Miss Marnac’s portrait seen on this postcard, was Leopold Reutlinger.

LITTLE GIRL WITH CYMBALS AND LOTS OF PERSONALITY (POSTCARD FROM ANTWERP, BELGIUM)

This vintage postcard features an adorable little girl playing the cymbals. She is wearing a flower wreath in her hair and a wonderful smile. The postcard was published by NPG (“Neue Photographische Gesellschaft”) and is part of a series (no. O 1448). The postcard has a Belgian stamp that was postmarked in 1909.  The postcard is addressed to someone living in Anvers (Antwerp), which is a Flemish city in Belgium.
