DR. TURNER’S SANITARIUM, COLFAX, IOWA

sanitarium 1This vintage postcard features a picture of Dr. Turner’s Sanitarium in Colfax, Iowa. Drs. Alice and Lewis Turner were owners of the Sanitarium “where one is taught to get well by natural methods”. The sanitarium was established by the Turners in 1904. The building was previously a hotel (The Grand). The average patient stay was three weeks and the doctors only used medicine in “stubborn cases”. Instead, hot packs, formentations (hot moist substances applied to the skin), and local mineral water were the treatments of choice. A stay at the sanitarium cost between 8 and 12 dollars a week. Mineral baths cost extra.  In 1911, the Turners sold the rest home to Dr. Lewis C. M. Porter, who joined forces with a local hospital. The rest home burned down in a fire in 1928.The postcard was published between 1905 and 1910 by H. W. Wood (Colfax Postcard Company). The postcard is a color lithographic print made in Germany and is in very good condition (see scans)

A MOTHER AND HER TWO CHILDREN POSE IN FRONT OF A HOUSE AND ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILES

family 3 snapshot 3

family 3 snapshot 4 This vintage snapshot features a mother and her two young children posing in the front yard of a house. Note that mom is wearing a pair of glasses and that the boy is barefoot. The threesome are plainly dressed. The little boy looks like he is a “rough and tumble” kind of kid. Behind the family are two old automobiles and what appears to be a shed, or barn. Further behind the family, I believe there is a man bending down as if to pick up something up off the grass. This vintage photograph measures about 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ and is in very good condition.

PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE GEISHA GIRL (CDV)

GISHA CDV

GISHA CDV 1

This cartes de visite portrait features a smiling barefoot little girl dressed as a geisha. She is holding an Asian style umbrella. Geisha girls are Japanese women who are entertainers. They perform ancient traditions of art, dance, and song. They wear traditional costumes and make-up. There was a time that geisha fashion was popular in the Western world. Both adult women and young children, in the west, would wear this Japanese fashion. It is not uncommon to find cabinet card era (late 19th and early 20th century) photographs of Western women wearing kimonos. This cdv photograph measures about 2 5/8″ x 3 5/8″.  (SOLD)GISHA CDV 2

PORTRAIT OF 4 DETECTIVES AND A UNIFORMED OFFICER STANDING IN FRONT OF A POLICE STATION (1930’S)

police

police 1 This vintage photograph features five policemen posing in front of the entrance to an unknown French city’s police department. Four of the men are dressed in plain clothes. They are likely detectives. A uniformed officer stands behind the plainclothesmen. None of these men are rookies. They look hardened and not the type of men you would want to enrage. Note that three of the men have pens in their pockets. The pens are easy to reach for writing citations. The signs on the wall of the building appear to say “Gardiens” (Police) and “Commissariat” (Department). This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1930’s. The photo measures about 5″ x 7″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

The photograph of Miss Dudley seen on this postcard was taken by well known female celebrity photographer Rita Martin. She was considered one of the best British photographers of her time. FAMILY PORTRAIT IN LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK (PHOTOGRAPHED BY THE ASTORIA PHOTO STUDIO)

long island city

long island city 1 This cabinet card is likely a family portrait. How everyone in the image is related, is anybody’s guess. The family members are well dressed. They don’t look like they’re having fun. In fact, this is a very serious group. This photograph was taken by the Astoria Photo Studio, located in Long Island City, New York. An ad for the studio was printed in “The Daily Star” (1920). The advertisement copy declares that the studio was established in 1871. MISS MURIEL BEAUMONT – BEAUTIFUL ENGLISH STAGE ACTRESS

beaumont

beaumont 1

Muriel Beaumont (Lady du Maurier (1876-1957) is the featured subject of this vintage real photo postcard. She was an English stage actress and was married to actor Sir Gerald du Maurier. He was the first person to play “Captain Hook”. Two of their daughters became accomplished writers. Her stage career ended in 1910. Beaumont was born in Sutton, England. Her father was a solicitor and when Beaumont decided to pursue an acting career, her father disapproved. In 1898 she made her stage debut at the Haymarket Theatre. In 1902 she appeared in “The Admirable Crichton” and met, for the second time, fellow cast member Gerald du Maurier. Within five short months, they were married (1903). Interestingly, they never appeared on stage together again. In 1905 she appeared in “The Merchant of Venice” with Violet Vanbrugh. This photo postcard was published by Rotary Photo and is part of the “Rotary Photographic Series” (no.1763 A).The photographer of Miss Beaumont’s portrait is Reinhold Thiele and he is known for his photographical talent. Thiele (1856-1921) also used the name “Karl Anton”. Seven of his photo portraits can be found in Great Britain’s National Portrait Gallery. He was born in Germany and learned about photography there. He came to London in 1878 and after a stint with photographer, William Henry Prestwich, he was hired by the London Stereoscopic Company (1880). In 1894, he established a studio known as Simmons & Thiele. Initially, Thiele specialized in photographing football teams. He is considered to be one of the early press photographers. Later, he operated a studio in London. He photographed many theatre stars. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF “WILD NELL” (CAROLINE MAY BLANEY) IN BUFFALO BILL STYLE WILD WEST SHOW

blaney This vintage real photo postcard features actress Caroline May Blaney. Biographical information about Miss Blaney is elusive. However, some information was uncovered. Miss Blaney acted in Western shows. At the time,  “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show” was quite popular. The show toured the US, Canada, and Europe. The success of this show spawned a number of other wild west shows. Miss Blaney performed in such shows. She is known for her performances with Young Buffalo, an American actor and entertainer. A photograph of the pair can be seen below. A review in the Brighton and Hove Society (1911) describes one of these performance. The show took place in the United Kingdom, at the Alhambra Theatre. The review mentions Caroline May Blaney. She received billing just below Young Buffalo. The show was called “King of the Wild West”. The reviewer wrote that Blaney deserved praise for her rendition of “My Pony Boy”. The writer adds that she received “hearty applause”. A sad and  interesting aside reported in the article is that in order to bring the Native Americans actors to England, a five thousand dollar bond had to be deposited with the United States to “procure” the right to take them on the foreign tour. The Native Americans were from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The portrait of Miss Blaney appearing on this postcard shows her in costume as “Wild Nell” in the “King of the Wild West Show”. “The New York Dramatic Mirror” (1910) published an article which included news about Miss Blaney. It reported that she was managed by her brother, Charles E. Blaney (1866-1944). He was a well known theatrical producer, director, and writer. The article tell the story of Blaney’s learning that her mother was in a serious car accident. She received the telegram in between the second and third acts of a play in which she was a performing. The show must go on, so Blaney wore street clothes during the third act enabling her to immediately dash to the local train station (Buffalo, New York) to catch a train to her mother’s home (Columbus, Ohio). The portrait was photographed by Foulsham & Banfield.  Foulsham & Banfield were well known celebrity photographers. Frank Foulsham and A. C. Banfield operated a studio in the 1900’s through the 1920’s.  (SOLD)
