PRETTY BABY IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

otto otto 1

A very cute little girl poses for her photograph at the studio of Wilhelm Otto in Vienna, Austria. This baby has personality galore. She is sitting on a fur covered chair and wearing a large bow in her hair. Her large eyes are wide open and she seems to be intelligently taking in all that is happening in the room in front of her. This cabinet card photograph is in good condition. Note the weak bottom right corner. The corner of the card is complete but apparently was bent sometime in the past and may be fragile (see scans). The middle of the reverse of the cabinet card has residue from it’s former life in a photograph album.   (SOLD)

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPH OF A VERY HAPPY BABY (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This image is special because it features a baby with a wonderful smile and happy demeanor. It is a rare occurrence to find a portrait of a baby with such a great smile. The photograph was taken at a studio and was used to produce this vintage real photo postcard. The baby is dressed in white and looks so adorable wearing a white sweater and little booties. The baby is sitting on a chair that is covered by a lace light blanket. I am unsure how the baby is safely held in the chair. There is no evidence of a hidden mother’s hands or a device to hold the baby safely in place. A studio backdrop can be seen in the background. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of the image indicates that the postcard was produced sometime between 1924 and 1949

THE MCNAUGHTON TWINS: PRETTY BABY GIRLS IN CHARDON, OHIO

king

This cabinet card portrait offers a double treat. The photograph features very beautiful twin baby sisters. An inscription on the reverse of the image (see below) identifies the girls as “Mary’s Twins”, Edith and Edna McNaughton. The twins are precious and one of them is offering the sweetest smile. The photographer of this terrific cabinet card is E. D. King who operated a studio in Chardon, Ohio. King’s studio was on the Randall Block in Chardon between 1885 and 1895. Research successfully uncovered some information about the twins. The girls were born to William McNaughton and Mary E. Grant McNaughton on 2/27/1891 in Claridon, Ohio. First, here are some details about Edith Emerretta McNaughton (1891-1952). The 1900 US census reveals that the twins had three older siblings. The 1910 US census finds that the twins had a younger sister named Ruth (age 15). Their father, William (age 69) worked as a blacksmith in his own business. Their mother Mary (age 53) was not employed. Edith completed high school and at age 22 married Hans Max Wilkens (1877-1938). Edith had two daughters with her husband. She was living in Cleveland Heights, Ohio at the time of her death from breast cancer. She is buried in Chardon Cemetery. Edith’s occupation prior to her death is listed as “parking lot operator”. Here is some information about Edna Marietta McNaughton (1891-1964). She graduated high school and married David Elmer Shanower in 1913. The 1930 US census finds her living in Mentor, Ohio with her husband and five sons. The 1940 US census discloses that her husband worked as a truck driver and salesman. Edith is buried in Mentor, Ohio. Two images of both Edith and Edna taken during their childhood can be seen below.  SOLD

A TOWER OF BABIES: ALSO KNOWN AS THE TOWER OF BABBLE (VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH)

babies

Take a look at this rare photograph of the tower of babble. Not exactly the picture one would imagine from the book of genesis story about the origin of multiple languages. I am very curious about how the babies that comprise this tower maintain their position. It is possible that they are strapped into their seats by a hidden metal brace. It is also possible that there someone or even a couple of people hiding behind the children holding at least some of them in place. Both these methods were used in photographing young children during this era of photography. Whatever method was employed, the photographer did an excellent job of capturing all the children while they were paying attention to the camera. Note that a least two of the babies are holding toys. This vintage photograph measures about 6 3/8″x 12″. The photographer’s name and the location of the studio are unknown. The image was purchased from an antique shop in Vancouver, Britsh Columbia, Canada.   (SOLD)

EYES WIDE OPEN: BABY POSES IN ROCKING CHAIR IN EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

BABY

This vintage photograph features a baby posing in a rocking chair at the Cambridge Studio in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The baby is wearing a gown and has a necklace around her neck. Her expression looks like she is trying to make sense out of the situation as she poses in front of the photographer. This portrait is unusual in that the photographer chose to produce an excessively close-up portrait.

MOM CRADLING HER LONG GOWNED BABY

MOM AND BABY_0001

A young mother and her baby pose for an unknown photographer in an unknown studio. The baby is wearing a long gown and the baby’s proud mom dressed up for this portrait. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the photograph was taken sometime between 1900 and 1909. The year is not definite because when someone trimmed the photograph they cut off the last digit of the year leaving “190” as the year.

ADORABLE BABY IN A WASHBOWL IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

A very cute baby poses for a photographer, artistically placed in a washbowl. The baby appears inquisitive about the proceedings. Bachrach & Bro. is the studio that produced this portrait. The gallery was located in Baltimore, Maryland. Kudos for the photographer for this creative close-up image. The Bachrach studio was nationally known and is still known today. David Bachrach (1845-1921) was an American commercial photographer based in Baltimore. He made significant contributions in technical, artistic and professional advancements in the field of photography. He was a national spokesperson for photographers and published many articles and photographs in photography journals. He experimented with self toning papers and developed the first practical process of photographic printing on canvas, a precursor to photo engraving. Bachrach Inc., founded in 1910, is still headed by the Bachrach family. The company owned studios in all major east coast cities. One of Bachrach’s earliest photographs was taken on assignment to cover the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863. He photographed President Lincoln delivering what would become, a very famous speech. Bachrach’s home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He once shared the home with a celebrated relative, Gertrude Stein. Among his famous portraits are images of Ulysses Grant, Theodore Roosevelt,Mark Twain, and Alexander Graham Bell. Bachrach’s business was truly a family business. Among the relatives who were involved  in the business was a brother,  a son, and two grandsons.
