This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty costumed performer. She is a dancer or actress or both. The woman is beautifully dressed. Note her wasp-like waist and her lovely kerchief. The photographer of this unidentified performer’s  portrait was Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. The postcard was published by NPG as part of a series (No.551/2). The card is a “Oranotypie”. An oranotype is a trade name for a type of glossy real photo postcard published by NPG.  (SOLD)

Postcard 1 features French singer, film and theater actress, Jane Dirys (1886-1922) of the Belle Epoque. She made her stage debut in 1906. In 1911, she married Paul Iribe (1883-1935), a well known French Illustrator and decorative arts designer. During the 1920’s he worked in Hollywood. He and Coco Chanel had an affair from 1931 until his death. Dirys’s marriage to Iribe lasted about seven years. They divorced in 1918. Tragically, Jane Dirys died at a young age. She was about 36 years old at the time of her death.This postcard close-up portrait of Miss Dirys shows her beauty. The photograph was taken by Leopold Reutlinger. HUGUETTE DUFLOS : PRETTY FRENCH FILM AND STAGE ACTRESS : QUIT COMEDIE FRANCAISE

This vintage real photo postcard features French stage and film actress, Huguette Duflos (1887-1982). She was married to actor Raphael Duflose from 1910 through 1928. Her early career was with the Comedie Francaise and she later pursued a film career. In 1931 she was the victim of an assault by a Frenchwoman. Her injuries were treated by noted psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The IMDb credits Duflos with 43 film appearances between 1914 and 1962. A 1926 article in the New York Times describes how Duflos, “the sweetest girl on the French stage”,  unexpectedly resigned from the Comedie Francaise and pursued other venues. This action violated her contract and she faced the threat of financial punishment for the rest of her career. The article asserts that Duflos was the most popular beauty on France’s stages and in addition, she was also admired by American audiences. This photo of Miss Duflos was taken by the noted photographic Reutlinger studio. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer and is part of the “Les Vedettes de Cinema” (The Stars of Film) series (No.16). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

GABRIELLE ROBINNE: BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED, AND POPULAR FRENCH ACTRESS

Anyone who collects vintage theatrical/film actress postcards, is very familiar with the subject of this real photo postcard. Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980) is an actress that was widely photographed. The reason for the production of so many postcards featuring Miss Robinne is that she was very popular during her era. Certainly, one of the reasons for her popularity, was her great beauty. Robinne was born in France and was a student at the Paris Conservatory. In 1904 she joined the company of Sarah Bernhardt and later joined the Theatre Michel in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her career soared when she began performing at the Comedie-Francaise in 1907. She remained with the company until 1938. She made her film debut in the 1906 production of “Le troubadour”. Two years later she had her first huge success in “L’assassinat du Duc de Guise” (1908). She is considered by many to be the first French star of the silent film era. She charmed her audiences with her beauty and excellent acting. Gabrielle Robinne shared her time between stage and film. The IMDb reports that she appeared in nearly fifty films between 1906 and 1973.She was known for “Conquered Hate” (1913,) “Struggle for Life” (1914), and “La reine de Saba” (1913). Robinne was married to actor Rene Alexandre from 1912 until she was widowed in 1946. Her work in the theater and film was recognized by France when she was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of Merit. The photographer of Robinne’s portrait on this card is Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. MAUD AMY : BEAUTIFUL FRENCH ACTRESS (EARLY 1900’S)

This vintage real photo postcard features a beautiful French actress named Maud Amy. Her name appears in theater magazines around the year 1904. Miss Amy is adorned with a number of necklaces and hair pieces as well as Cameo earrings. The photo seen on this postcard, was taken by Leopold Reutlinger. He was a famous celebrity photographer of his era. He operated a studio in Paris, France. This postcard was published by SIP as part of a series (no 1340).  (SOLD)

MISS LEONIE YAHNE : PRETTY FRENCH COMEDIC ACTRESS : PHOTO BY LEOPOLD REUTLINGER

This vintage real photo postcard features French comedic actress, Leonie Yahne (1867-1950). She spent most of her career acting on the stages of Paris. She was an active performer between 1884 and 1917. In 1895, she was drawn in a stage role by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1913, Yahne appeared in a silent film short with actor, Max Linder. In 1911, Yahne was a victor in a lawsuit against a Paris entertainer named “Yane”. The lawsuit concerned the other actress using a name too similar to Yahne’s moniker.  Yahne was reported to be a society favorite who was expert with foils and horsemanship. It was also noted that Yahne’s driving style made her a terror on the roads of France. The photograph on this postcard was taken by celebrated portrait photographer, Leopold Reutlinger. His studio was located in Paris, France. He photographed many theatrical stars and other celebrities. This vintage real photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

ANDREE MEGARD : FRENCH ACTRESS AND STAGE BEAUTY : PHOTO BY REUTLINGER : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of French actress and stage beauty, Andree Megard (1869-1952). She was born in France. Her parents were “well-off peasents” . At some point, her parents sent her to an Aunt to work in the aunt’s dry goods store. At fifteen years of age, she ran away to Paris. At first, she worked  as an artist model. From 1896 to 1925, she appeared on the Paris stage in such works as Shakespeare and plays directed by her husband, Firmin Gemier. In 1913, while playing in Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, she had an affair with Rostand. In 1907, she starred in “Anna Karenina”. In 1909, she appeared in a silent film. Megard was viewed as representing the highest echelon of fashion and beauty.   She was considered “tall, graceful, and distinguished looking”. The international public monitored her hairstyle, and her costumes very closely. She was the subject of many magazine and newspaper articles. The portrait of Miss Megard seen on this postcard was taken by Leopold Reutlinger’s studio in Paris, France. It is part of a series (no.2268). Reutlinger was a very popular celebrity photographer. This real photo postcard was published by the Reutlinger studio. This postcard is quite unusual, perhaps rare, because Reutlinger seldom employs dogs in his photos. In the message written on this postcard, the writer sends her happiness, or regards to the addressee. SOLD

GABRIELLE DEMOUGEOT : BEAUTIFUL OPERA SINGER : REUTLINGER : PARIS : (1909)

This vintage real photo postcard features opera singer, Gabrielle Demougeot. This is a color tinted portrait of the pretty opera singer. There is little biographical information readily available about Miss Demougeot. I was able to find a snippet review of one of her performances. The writer describes her as “a pretty coquette with the voice of a high soprano, of a somewhat sour tone, who was charming and …”. Unfortunately, the snippet stopped mid sentence. This postcard is a studio portrait from the renowned French photographer, Leopold-Emile Reutlinger. His studio was located in Paris, France. The postcard was postmarked in 1909. The front (image side) is in excellent condition while the reverse has a scrape near the center bottom of the card (see scans).
