This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome ethnic looking young man posing for his portrait at an unidentified private photo studio. Perhaps the man is of Hispanic or Mediterranean origin. The gentleman is well dressed and gives the appearance of being a businessman. His facial expression exudes self assurance. This photo postcard certainly evokes a number of unanswerable questions. The postcard’s stamp box indicates that it was printed on Artura card stock sometime between 1908 and 1924. Residue on the reverse of the postcard reveals that it once was a resident of a photo album.   (SOLD)

THE GREAT WAR IMPACTS A LOVELY FAMILY IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

War is hell to nations, communities, and families. In “A Farewell to Arms” (1929), novelist and World War I veteran Ernest Hemingway wrote “There were many words that you could not stand to hear and finally only the names of places had dignity. Abstract words such as glory, honor, courage, or hallow were obscene.” This cabinet card photograph illustrates the impact of war on a family. The two men in uniform are likely the father and oldest son of the family. The men could not look more serious. Perhaps at the time of this photograph their nation was near, or at war. The remainder of the family (mother, two daughters, and a son) look extremely concerned and worried. The welfare of their nation and their family unit was in jeopardy. This terrific photograph speaks loudly and clearly about the horror of war. The photographer of this emotionally charged image is Ant. Knoll who operated a studio in Vienna, Austria.

PORTRAIT OF A FASHIONABLE MAN IN A TWEED SUIT

This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome well dressed young man posing for his portrait at a private photo studio. This fashionable young man is wearing a tweed suit, a beautiful white collared stripe shirt, and a pretty tie. He is holding a cigarette in his right hand. The stamp box indicates that the postcard was manufactured by Crown Studios sometime between 1913 and 1929.

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY COUPLE IN MARION, INDIANA

This cabinet card photograph features a lovely couple posing for their photograph at the Harnish & Marquart studio in Marion Indiana. The pair are well dressed and likely are financially well-to-do. The gentleman is wearing a three piece suit, a wide neck tie, and a shirt with a formal collar. He appears to be quite intense and probably wasn’t pleased that some of his hair when he learned that some of his hair was out of place in this photograph. The woman is wearing a ruffled top, fingerless gloves, a high collar, and a “busy” hat. She is holding a black parasol. Her clothing gives her a “bell shape”. Like many portraits of couples in the cabinet card era, the man is sitting and the woman is standing. It likely would be a project for the woman to take a seat, never mind, look attractive and comfortable. This image is crisp and clear. The photographers were evidently talented. Information about Mr. Harnish was readily available but that was not the case for Mr Marquart. Harnish was born in Pennsylvania in 1847 to a family of German descent. He left the family farm at age nineteen and learned photography in Myerstown, Pa. He moved to Bluffton with his family in 1867. In 1871 he married Miss Laura Myers (born 1850). George Adam Harnish opened his first photography studio in Bluffton, Indiana in 1872. In 1881 he became a town councilman in Bluffton. He sold his photography business to Benjamin Ashbaucher in 1889. Marion is about 35 miles west of Bluffton. It is my hypotheses that Harnish began working in Marion after selling his first studio. Clearly that is where he partnered with Marquart. There is a photograph in the American Museum of  Photography that was taken by Harnish & Marquart in 1899.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A MOST ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL IN EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN

This vintage post cabinet card era photograph features an adorable little girl. She is quite expressive and appears to be in a playful mood. The photograph comes from the studio of R. G. Shaker of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Shaker is listed in a historical directory of Wisconsin photographers. The listing stats that he was a photographer in Eau Claire from 1897-1939. Rasmus Gudbrandsson Shaker (1862-1943) was born in Norway. His original last name appears to have been “Skjaak”. He also was known as Robert G. Shaker. He came to Eau Claire in 1879 and worked in the forestry industry. One of his jobs was working in a saw mill. He learned photography from photographer M. W. Burns and took over his teacher’s studio in 1895. R. G. married Olea Isakson in 1887 and the couple had five children. His son, Gilbert (1889-?), was a photographer in Eau Claire between 1914 and 1916. R. G. Shaker is buried in Eau Claire’s Forest Hill Cemetery. Judging by this image, Shaker had talent. This is a wonderful portrait of an adorable little girl.  (SOLD)

TWO YOUNG DANDIES WITH TERRIFIC HATS (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

Two dandies pose for their photographic portrait at an unidentified studio. They are wearing wonderful hats and both of the men are flashing half smiles. The postcard has a CYKO stamp box revealing that it was published between 1906 and 1915.
