Screen Shot 2019-04-23 at 11.46.52 PM This vintage photograph features a village in Vietnam. Note the thatched huts, the children sitting on logs in front of the huts, and the two boys riding water buffalo. This photograph is a stock photo. The stock photo industry became popular in the 1920’s. Stock photo agencies charge users to use stock photos in newspapers, magazines, websites, books, and other types of media. This photo of a Vietnamese village may have been used by journalistic or educational publications. The inclusion of water buffalos in this photograph, is a reminder of the importance of water buffalo in Vietnamese culture. The animal originated in Southeast Asia and is about seven feet tall and weighs about 2,500 pounds. They can run 30 miles per hour which is almost fast enough to escape their major predator, tigers. Water buffalo tend to be gentle and tame. They serve as a source of food, and power. They are used for transportation and for plowing fields. Unfortunately, water buffalo are an endangered species. There are only 4,000 of this species remaining in the wild. When I hear the words “water buffalo”, I think of the 1977 Houston Rockets. I was a rabid fan of the team and I remember that their front line was known as the “water buffalo”. Apparently, Moses Malone, Rudy Tomjanovich, and Kevin Kunnert, were considered so slow moving; that they were given the moniker of “the water buffalo”. This photograph measures about 7″ x 4 5/8″.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A SPECTACULAR AND DASHING COUPLE

TUXEDO COUPLE

TUXEDO COUPLE 1This photograph is a portrait of a spectacular and dashing couple. The gentleman is wearing a tuxedo with a white bow tie and a corsage. He has a terrific handlebar mustache. The lady is wearing a dress with feathers, a corsage, and a necklace. This pair certainly make a beautiful couple. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph states “To Papa” and is signed “Wm. M….”. Unfortunately, a former owner of this image trimmed the photograph to fit it into a picture frame and the debris included the signer’s last name. The photographer’s name and location was also lost in the scissor work. The photo measures about 6″ x 4 7/8″.  Overall, this vintage photograph is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A MENNONITE COUPLE

This vintage cabinet card photograph features a couple holding hands and posing for a photographer. Their style of clothing leads me to believe that they are Mennonites. The photographer of this photo is W. H. Farley. He operated photographic studios in Crete, Tampico, and Gibson, Illinois during the 1880’s. The cabinet card gallery has several photos by Farley. One of these images also is of a Mennonite couple. To see Farley’s other photos, place his name in the search box.   (SOLD)

WELL DRESSED AND HANDSOME YOUNG MAN WITH AN IMPOSING MUSTACHE IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

imposing mustache

imposing mustache 1 This carte de visite photograph features a dashing young man with an imposing mustache. He is elegantly dressed in formal clothing. The photo was taken by the Beckel studio in Zurich, Switzerland. The cdv photograph was taken sometime shortly after 1895. The date is apparent because the reverse of the image advertises some of the awards received by the studio. The last award listed is from an exhibition in Glarus (Switzerland) in 1895, revealing that this image was created after that year. This carte de visite photograph is in excellent condition (see scans).   (SOLD)

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPH: GROTON, SOUTH DAKOTA

This Cabinet photograph introduces us to a bride and groom photographed by H Steinhauer in Groton, South Dakota.  The wedding couple doesn’t look very happy or affectionate on their special day. A little research reveals that the town of Groton was established in 1881 and that South Dakota became a state in 1889.  Therefore the Cabinet card was photographed after 1889. The town of Groton had a population of of 1,356 in the 2000 census. I wonder if the bride and groom have any descendants remaining there. This cabinet card is in very good condition (see scans).
