This cabinet card photograph features a bearded gentleman. Judging by his attire; the man is a clergyman. I have seen cabinet card photos of rabbis wearing the same type of cap. However, this man’s beard is way too well groomed to be a Hasidic rabbi. The photographer who took this photo is Thomas D. Jones. He operated a photo studio in West Troy, New York. His name appears in Troy directories between 1881 and 1899. He is listed as a photographer. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

There ARE rabbis that are not Hasidic. Hasidism is just one sect. Since this picture is from the latter part of the 19th century, the man could possibly be a Reform or Conservative rabbi. Probably not Orthodox, as those rabbis wore distinctive hats. And many kept their beards neatly trimmed. Just so you know. Jane S. Gabin
Thanks. You make an excellent point. Sometime soon I will be posting a cdv portrait of a Bar mitzvah boy from between the 1860’s and the 1880’s. It is a fantastic photograph
