HANDSOME MAN WEARING A FUR COAT IN PRINEVILLE, OREGON (1891 CABINET CARD)

This cabinet card photograph features a very handsome man wearing fur coat in Prineville, Oregon. Note his wonderful mustache. This cabinet card portrait was taken by the Western Photo Association studio. The managers of the business were G. H. Ramsdell and F. P. Eastburn. A notation on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the subject of this photo is J. H. Nigle of Prineville, Oregon. The date of the photograph is noted as March, 1891. A preliminary search found little information about the gentleman in this photo. The U.S. General Land Office has an 1891 record of a John H. Nigle from Crook County (the location of Prineville). No other information was found. SOLD

JULIE MARBERG : PRETTY EUROPEAN ACTRESS (CARTE DE VISITE)

This carte de visite portrait features actress Julie Marberg. She appears quite young in this photograph. She is wearing flowers in her hair and it appears that she is also wearing a hat or bow. Cdv photographs of Miss Marberg can be found in the collections of the Vienna Museum, as well as the Vienna Theater Museum. This photograph was taken by Moriz Muller Jr.. He operated a photo studio in Vienna, Austria. The reverse of the photograph displays a number of European photography awards the studio won in the 1870’s. This photograph has been trimmed to fit into an album or frame. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A GEISHA

This vintage photograph features a pretty Geisha girl. Presumably, the photo was taken in Japan. Geisha girls are Japanese women who are entertainers. They perform ancient traditions of art, dance, and song. They wear traditional costumes and make-up. This photograph measures about 3 1/8″ x 4 1/2″ and is in excellent condition.

AILEEN DAVIES AS MAD MARGARET IN “RUDDIGORE” : D’OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

This vintage real photo postcard features actress and singer, Miss Aileen Davies (1902-1981). At first glance, this image appears to be a photograph of a pretty woman on a bad hair day. However, this is actually a photograph of Miss Davies playing the role of “Mad Margaret” in “Ruddigore”. The comic opera was also known as “The Witches Curse”. The production was presented by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the music and libretto was written by Gilbert and Sullivan. It was first performed in 1887 for a run of 288 performances and was revived in 1920. The “Gasbag” (2006) quotes a review of Miss Davies performance in a 1926 revival of “Ruddigore”. In regard to the actress, the reviewer admires “her prissy delivery and skittish style” and describes her “wonderful sexy lift ” into song. This photo postcard was published by Parksle Pictures as part of a series (No. 157). Davies is best known for her role in The Mikado (1926). The YouTube video below presents Beatrice Elburn, Elsie Griffin, and Aileen Davies, performing a song from “The Mikado”. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD

WOMAN WITH A SENSE OF STYLE AND A VERY LARGE FEATHER HAT (RPPC)

This vintage real photo postcard features an older woman with a unique sense of style. Note her large feather hat, wire rimmed glasses, necktie, and long fur coat. The woman has a very sweet facial expression. The AZO stamp box indicates that this postcard dates back to sometime between 1904 and 1918, has excellent clarity, and is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD

A NURSE TENDS TO A WOUNDED SOLDIER WHILE SOLDIER’S COMRADE PROVIDES SUPPORT

This vintage real photo postcard features a nurse, wearing a red cross armband, tending to a wounded soldier. The soldiers comrade is providing support by putting his arm around the shoulder of his compatriot. Both men are armed. Note the backpack on the back of the standing soldier. In addition, note the medical supply box held by the nurse. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. A number of postcard publishing companies joined the cartel in an effort to stave off the effect of competition on the pricing of postcards. This card is part of a series (no. 6511/12). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF THREE VISITORS TO CONEY ISLAND : COURTESY OF THE DREAM STUDIO (1908)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of three visitors to Coney Island. Coney Island is a neighborhood and entertainment area in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn. The postmark on this card was stamped in 1908. By that time, Coney Island was well known for it’s amusement parks. In fact, between 1880 and World War II, Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States. The city of New York built a boardwalk to be utilized by visitors. Where there are boardwalks and amusement parks; there are photo studios. One of these studios was the “Dream Studio” and the threesome seen in this photo found their way there to create a souvenir memory. The “Dream Studio” was operated by Mr. H. Tarr. It was located on Surf Avenue at West 6th Street. The 1911 Dreamland Fire burned down Mr Tarr’s photo studio, but in a short time, it was reopened. SOLD
