The child in this photo appears sad and terrified. This photograph was taken by Gordon N. Converse (c1921-1999) for the Christian Monitor News and Photo Service. He started as a combat photographer for the Christian Monitor during World War II. When he left the Navy, he spent 40 years traveling the world photographing people, places, and situations, for publication. He became the Monitor’s chief photographer and photo editor.
