PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL IN BERLIN (PHOTOGRAPHER: SOPHUS WILLIAMS)

This carte de visite photograph features an adorable little girl. She is well dressed and is holding a parasol. This cdv photo was taken at the Berlin (Germany) studio of Sophus Williams. Mr. Williams was a significant figure in the early days of photography. His photographs are cited in many articles and they appear in multiple esteemed museums. Sophus Williams’s actual name was Sophus Vilhelm Schou. He was of Danish origin but became a German photographer and publisher. He was born in Copenhagen in 1835 and he died in Grabow, Germany in 1900. He went to London in 1859 and at an unknown date, moved to Berlin where he passed himself off as being British. He was married to Agnes Klitz (1843-1911). In 1868, Sophus partnered with businessman Rudolph Gustav Leonhard Reinhold Knaak , to buy out an art dealer’s trading company (E. Linde & Co). The firm was located in Berlin, Germany. Sophus Williams published the work of many photographers and participated in Vienna’s 1873 World Exhibition. His publishing firm was well known for many formats, including Stereoscopic photos, Carte de Visite images, Cabinet Cards, and Leporellos. What are Leporellos? They are printed material folded into an “accordion-pleat” style. The method is also known as a “concertina fold”. Williams’s “Linde & Co” was well known for their photographs of paintings. Williams was active in Berlin through much of the 1860’s and 1880’s. Sophus Williams succumbed to a heart attack in 1900. His work can be found in high profile museums such as J Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, CA) and the George Eastman Museum (Rochester, NY), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), The British Museum (London, England), and The Altes Museum (Berlin). This carte de visite image is in good condition (see scans). (COST)

A WELL DRESSED GENTLEMAN IN AMIENS, FRANCE (CDV)

This carte de visite features a well dressed man posing for his portrait at the L & F Caron studio in Amiens, France. Note the gentleman’s bushy mustache and his bowler hat. In addition, check out the box on which the fellow is resting his right hand. I wonder if the box served a purpose or if it was purely decorative. The gentleman seems very poised in front of the camera. The Caron studio was located in Amiens, a city in northern France. Leon Jean-Baptiste Victor Caron was born in 1841 in Amiens. His father, Alfred, was a printer and bookseller. Upon his father’s death,, Leon’s mother managed the bookstore. At the end of the 1860’s his mother opened a photography studio which she named “Veuve Alfred Caron”. Interestingly, the translation of “veuve” is “widow”. Leon’s mother chose to name the studio under her late husband’s name, rather than her own. This was likely the result of best business practices in a misogynist society. At an unknown date, Leon took over the studio from his mother. For a time, he had a partner named F. Caron, who was likely, Leon’s brother. Leon won many medals for his photographs, including a gold medal in Paris in 1892. He was still an active photographer in 1901. Remarkably, the Caron studio remained in business until the 1960’s.

TWO ADORABLE SISTERS SITTING ON A BENCH IN NERAC, FRANCE (CDV)

This carte de visite photograph features two adorable sisters sitting on a studio bench in Nerac, France. The two girls are wearing identical dresses, both accessorized with lace. The children are also wearing hair bows. Interestingly, one child is wearing the bow on the left side of her head while the second child’s bow is on the right side of her head. I suppose this was the work of the photographer who was intent on creating symmetry in this image. Take note of the ornate carvings on the legs of the bench. This photograph was taken at the Tuja studio. As stated earlier, the studio was located in Nerac, France. Nerac is located in southwestern France. This carte de visite photograph is in excellent condition (see scans).

WOW! A TERRIFIC OCCUPATIONAL CARTE de VISITE : LAHTI, FINLAND

This carte de visite photo is special because it is an occupational photograph. Many vintage image collectors search for and value occupational photographs. This CDV features a man at work but what is his occupation? It is clear that a clamp vice is one of the tools that he utilizes. There are strips of some material on the table in front of the vice. Are they strips made from medal? The worker appears to be wearing a uniform. I wish I knew his story? The photographer of this image is named Vaino Anshelm Rautell. As a photographer, he went by the name of VA Rautell. He was born in Lahti, Finland in 1875, and died there in 1942. Rautel studied art (painting) in Helsinki during the early 1890’s. He worked as a photographer in Lahti from about 1895 through 1927. In 1918, he photographed events of the Finnish civil war in Lahti. Teresia Dahlbom, his wife (m.1905) , worked with him in his studio. The couple divorced in 1927 and it appears they both ended their photography careers that same year. The pair had two children. At least one of Rautell’s photographs can be found in the collection of the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki.   SOLD
