HANDSOME FLY FISHERMAN IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS : CABINET CARD

Boston was known for a lot of things at the turn of the century, but fly fishing was probably not one of those things. Fly fishing on the Thames River wasn’t  likely a destination vacation. This photograph features a handsome gentleman who appears dressed for an adventure. He is wearing a hat with fishing lures hooked into it. He is also wearing a tie, tucked into his shirt. The gentleman was photographed by McCormick, who had a studio located in Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston Directory (1873) lists a John L. McCormick who operated as a photographer in Boston. The 1880 United States Census finds McCormick (age 32)living in Boston and married to Elizabeth McCormick (age 26). He is listed as a photographer. The 1900 census does not list his occupation but reports that the couple were living with their five children and an eighteen year-old female servant (nanny?). The 1910 census includes McCormick, but once again, does not list his occupation.

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG, BEAUTIFUL, AND FASHIONABLE WOMAN IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

This cabinet card portrait features an attractive well dressed young woman. One could certainly refer to her as a fashionista. She is identified on the reverse of the photograph. Her name is E. S. Garfield and she was living in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. This portrait of Miss Garfield was taken by the McCormick & Heald studio in Boston. Research may have revealed some information about E. S. Garfield. The 1865 Massachusetts census reveals that there was an Emma Susie Garfield living in Fitchburg. She was only 4 years old at that time, as she was born in 1861. If this cabinet card photograph was taken in the 1880’s, her date of birth matches the age at which she appears in this photo. At the time of the 1865 census, Emma lived with her father (James. F. Dana), her mother (Emily), a younger sister (Mary), and 76 year-old Susan Newton (mom’s mom). Emma’s dad worked as a coal dealer. In 1882 Emma married William A. Blodgett in Fitchburg. At the time of the marriage, Emma was a housewife and William was a merchant. Heald (1835-1900) operated the Boston studio that produced this excellent portrait.  At one point in his career,  Heald supervised the portrait studio operated by famed Boston photographer, George K. Warren (1824-1884). Heald oversaw the celebrity and theatrical portraits produced by the Warren Studio.   (SOLD)

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMAN IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

I do not think it is an exaggeration to state that the young woman seen in this cabinet card portrait, is exquisitely beautiful. She is well dressed and well coiffed. She has lace at her collar and at the bottom of her sleeves. Her hair was meticulously prepared for this portrait. She is wearing star earrings and a ring. She is holding a folded fan decorated with feathers. John L. McCormick and his partner Sumner B. Heald (1835-1900) operated the Boston studio that produced this excellent portrait. Both McCormick and Heald are no strangers to the Cabinet Card Gallery. The two photographers have a number of photographs in the gallery that can be accessed by placing their last name in the site’s search box. Take a look at their work and learn a little bit more about McCormick and Heald. Interestingly, Heald supervised the portrait studio operated by famed Boston photographer, George K. Warren (1824-1884). Warren also has a large presence in the Cabinet Card Gallery. Heald oversaw the celebrity and theatrical portraits produced by the Warren Studio.   SOLD

BLANCH HOWARD: A PRECOCIOUS TEN YEAR OLD IN BOSTON (1887)

Ten year-old Blanch Howard poses for this cabinet card photograph by McCormick of Boston, Massachusetts. She cofidently stares into the camera and has a look of precociousness. Her name is inked on the reverse of the card and it is spelled Blanch and not Blanche. Blanch is a name of French origin and has a creative spelling.
