MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF FRANCE : L’ALSACIENNE PROVINCE : PHOTO BY JEAN AGELOU

This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series named “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France” (The Most Beautiful Women of France). This series is about the Provinces of France, and the model for this image represents L’alsacienne (Alsace). Note that the woman in this photograph is wearing a pretty smile. This postcard is no.15 in the series. There were a number of different series published. The Province series was one of the more popular series. The models in this series represent different French Provinces and wear traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This postcard was published by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s.  Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images. The photographer of this postcard portrait is Jean Agelou (1878-1921). Agelou was a French photographer of the 1910’s and 1920’s who is best known for his erotic and nude photographs. He was born in Egypt and not much is known about his private life. Agelou generally used models between the age of 20 and 24 years-old. He had a favorite model. Her name was “Fernande” and in addition to modeling, she was Agelou’s lover. Although the 1900’s was the “golden age” of erotic photograph, photographers who took such risque photos had to use discretion. As a result, Agelou signed his work “JA”. In 1908, nudity in photographs was banned in France and photographers had to cover nude women images with strategically placed undergarments or other materials. Nude images had to circulate on the down low. They were sent in the mail inside of envelopes. Fernande remained popular and her erotic photographs were enjoyed by soldiers on both sides during World War I. Jean Agelou died in 1921; the result of a car accident. His brother George, who managed Jean’s business, also was killed in the crash. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

FOUR AMERICAN TRACK STARS : OLYMPIC GAMES 1924 : TWO MEDALS : NOYER : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features four American track stars at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. Pictured are Jackson Scholz, Charles Paddock, Emerson Carlysle Norton, and George Hill.  Jackson Scholz (1897-1986) was a sprinter. He was the first person to appear in sprint finals in three different Olympic games. He won two gold medals including one in 1924 (200m). He was depicted by actor Brad Davis in the movie “Chariots of Fire” (1981). After his retirement from track, he became a successful writer. Charles Paddock (1900-1943) fought in World War I and then ran track at USC. In the 1920 Olympics, he won a gold medal (100 m) and a silver medal (200 m). In 1924, he once again won a silver medal (200 m). Like Scholz, Paddock was also portrayed in “Chariots of Fire”. Paddock competed in the 1928 Olympics, but won no medals. After the Olympics, Paddock had management positions in Newspaper publishing. In 1926, he appeared in a silent film, “The Campus Flirt” with pretty Paramount starlet, Bebe Daniels. During World War II, Paddock died in an Alaskan plane crash with Major General William Upshur. Paddock, who was a Captain, served on the General’s staff. Paddock was inducted into track’s hall of fame in 1976. Emerson Carlysle Norton (1900-1986) competed in the decathalon. In the 1924 Olympics, he won the silver medal in that event. George Hill (1901-1992) was a sprinter and he competed in the 200 m and finished fourth. A year later, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an economics degree. PORTRAIT OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF FRANCE : L’EMERAUDE : ALFRED NOYER

This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series named “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France” (The Most Beautiful Women of France). This series is about gem stones, and the model for this image represents “L’Emeraude” (Emeralds). There were a number of different series published. One of the more popular series was one in which models represented different French Provinces by wearing traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This postcard was edited by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s. Many of his early postcards were reproductions of artworks. He also produced illustrated patriotic postcards during World War I. With the onset of the 1920’s he began producing postcards of children and women. Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images. Some of his postcards list his name while others are simply marked “AN”. SOLD2

PEARL WHITE : AMERICAN STAGE AND FILM STAR : PERILS OF PAULINE : RPPC

Pearl White (1889-1938) was an American actress of film and stage. She started her career on the stage at just 6 years old in the play, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. At thirteen years of age she was a bareback rider for a circus. She dropped out of high school to join a touring stage company. Next she worked as a singer in Cuba and South America. She made her appearances in dance halls and casinos. In 1910, her voice began to fail and she began to appear in silent films, including many popular serials. Her nickname was “Queen of the Serials’. She did the majority of her own stunts in these film serials. She is known well for her role in “The Perils of Pauline”. She was often cast in the role of an athletic heroine, rather than the more typical, innocent young woman. As a result of her appearances in “The Perils of Pauline”, she was soon earning $1,750 per week. She increased her star power as she appeared in other serials. In these films she flew airplanes, raced cars, and did other action hero feats. By 1919 White moved on to more dramatic roles. She appeared in ten drama films for Fox Film Corporation. She finished her career by taking roles in European films, and finally, appearing on the European stage. While performing in London, she earned three thousand dollars a week. At the time of her retirement (1924), White had banked two million dollars. She then began investing. Her investments included a hotel, a night club, and a stable of race horses. White was married twice, each time, for short duration to actors. White died of liver failure, possibly due to her history of heavy drinking. Her drinking may have been attributable to her problems with pain stemming from a spinal injury occurring during her stunt days. The IMDb site credits white with 228 film appearances between 1910 and 1924. This real photo film star photo was published by Cinemagazine (Paris Edition). Wristwatches were introduced in 1869 and became popular at the turn of the century. This postcard is no.21 in the series. There were a number of different series published. MAURICE DEGRELLE : 1924 & 1928 OLYMPICS : FRENCH SPRINTER : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features French track sprinter, Maurice Degrelle (1901-1987). The track star competed at the 1924 (Paris) and 1928 (Amsterdam) Summer Olympic Games. In 1924, Degrelle competed in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4 x 100 meter relay events. In 1928, he competed in both the 200 meter and the 4 x 100 meter relays. The postcard was published by Alfred Noyer as part of a series (No.134). SOLD

ENID BENNETT : SILENT FILM AND STAGE ACTRESS : MAID MARIAN IN ROBIN HOOD

This vintage real photo postcard features Australian silent film actress, Enid Bennett (1893-1969). She was mostly active in American films. She was born in Australia and attended an an acting and elocution school in Perth. In 1910 she joined a touring theatrical company. Two years later she joined the Fred Niblo – Josephine Cohan touring company. She understudied for Cohan and would consistently receive positive reviews. In 1915, Enid began to appear in Australian films. Also in 1915, Enid came to the United States and made her American theatrical debut in “Cock O’ The Walk” at the George M. Cohan theater on Broadway. She soon was appearing in important roles in American films. One of her more famous roles was playing Maid Marian in Robinhood (1922) with Douglas Fairbanks. By 1923, her career had slowed. However, she made the transition to sound, appearing in two Jackie Cooper films. She nearly comletely retired in 1933. Her final film role was in the Marx Brother’s “The Big Store” (1941). The IMDb reports that Enid had 52 film credits between 1916 and 1941. Bennett married Fred Niblo in 1918 and their marriage ended in 1948 upon Niblo’s death. In 1963, she married American film director, Sidney Franklin. Enid’s two sisters, Catherine and Marjorie Bennett, were also actresses. The card was published by Cinemagazine (Paris Edition). The postcard is part of a series (No.139) The portrait of Bennett is by Alfred Noyers studio in Paris. The postcard dates back to circa the 1920’s and is in very good condition (see scans).

LILA LEE : AMERICAN SILENT AND TALKIE FILM STAR : “CUDDLES” : VAUDEVILLE

This vintage real photo postcard features leading lady screen actress, Lila Lee (1905-1973). She performed in both silent and early sound films. She was born in New Jersey and her family were German immigrants. The family relocated to New York City. Her family encouraged her participation in “kiddie review shows”. The energetic and outgoing child was given the nickname of “Cuddles”. The name stuck to her throughout her acting career. Her juvenile acting kept her quite busy and she required private tutors for her education. Lila acted in vaudeville fo an eight year period. In 1918 she was signed by Jesse Lasky (Famous Players) for a film contract. In a short time, the company became Paramount Pictures. Her first feature film performance received much public approval. She was just 13 years old at the time of her film debut. Lila quickly became a leading lady and starred with performers like Conrad Nagel, Gloria Swanson, and Rudolph Valentino.  In 1922, she won the first WAMPAS Baby Star Award. Lila was a very popular leading lady during the 1920’s. Her films were popular with critics and audiences alike. She was one of the few stars that made a successful transition from silent to sound films. In the 1930’s she made some bad career decisions and had bouts of tuberculosis and alcoholism. As a result, her latter film roles were mostly in B movies. In 1936, her film career basically ended as the result of a scandal involving the sucide of a man that she was dating.  Lila Lee lied to the District Attorney when she reported that the victim left no suicide note, when in fact she knew that he did. Lee’s personal life was unstable. She was married and divorced three times. Her son, James Kirkwood became a successful playwright and screenwriter. His credits include “A Chorus Line” and “P.S. Your Cat is Dead”.  The IMDb lists 103 credits in Lee’s filmography (1918-1967). This vintage postcard was published by Alfred Noyer as part of the “Les Vedettes de Cinema” series. The postcard was released while she was employed by Paramount Pictures. The card is of French origin. (SOLD)
