dark soldier 1 This carte de visite photograph features a German soldier. I believe that he is an officer  in his dress uniform. Note the white gloves that he is holding and his sidearm. The photographer was Max Seifert. He operated a studio in Freiberg, Germany. Freiberg is a town located in the the Free State of Saxony, Germany.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG FIREMAN IN GLEN’S FALLS, NEW YORK (CARTE DE VISITE)

fireman 11

A uniformed young man poses for his portrait at a Glen’s Falls, New York photography studio. The photographers operating the studio were Conkey (George W.) & Hultz. The gentleman in this photograph appears to be a fireman. His belt buckle indicates that he was in the first company of the department. Note his Napoleonic pose. It is possible that the subject of this cdv photograph is actually a policeman, naval officer, or some other uniformed worker. However, I am fairly confident that he is a fireman. This carte de visite is in very good condition (see scans).  (SOLD)

THREE YOUNG SIBLINGS POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN NEW YORK CITY (PHOTO BY R. A. LEWIS)

This carte de visite portrait features three sisters posing for their portrait at the R. A. Lewis gallery in New York City. Each girl has a fabric band around just above their waist. My first impression was that the band was used by the photographer to discourage the kids from moving around during the photo shoot. I believe it is more likely that the bands are decorative. In fact, the two older girls are wearing identical dresses. In addition, note the handkerchief stuffed into the middle child’s dress pocket. Magnification confirms that it is a handkerchief and not a flaw in the photograph (see scan). Richard A. Lewis, the photographer of this image, was the son of William Lewis, a renownd Manufacturer of daguerreotype and wet plate cameras and other photographic apparatus. Richard opened a Daguerreotype studio in about the early 1840’s. Lewis moved his studio around New York City on several occasions. The Langdon Road directory contends that he was located at the 160 Chatham Street address (listed on this cdv) between 1864 and 1866 and through the 1880’s and 1890’s.  (SOLD)

INCREDIBLY ADORABLE AND FASHIONABLE CHILD IN OSCHATZ, GERMANY

The young child seen in this carte de visite is both stylish and adorable. The photographer did an excellent job capturing the essence of this child. Kudos to mom for being an excellent fashion coordinator. The photographer of this cdv image is Herm. Kocxyk. He operated a studio in Oschatz, Germany which is a town located in the Free State of Saxony. An inscription on the reverse of the cdv reveals that the photograph was taken in 1903. I was unable to translate the rest of the inscription other than “Our favorite ………”. Perhaps a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery can complete the translation.

ADDENDUM: I HAVE BEEN OFFERED A TRANSLATION OF THE INSCRIPTION. SEE IT BELOW.

The back of this photo says:

“Our darling Fritzel (nickname for Fritz)
3/4 of a year old (9 months)
Fritz Hänsel born 25. June 1903

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WEDDING COUPLE IN SAALFELD, GERMANY

kraatzert

This carte de visite is a wedding portrait that was taken by the Kratzert studio in Saalfeld, Germany. Like many wedding photographs of the time, we see the groom sitting and the bride standing. The couple appear to be relatively young. The pretty bride is wearing a wedding gown with a high collar. She is wearing a necklace and holding a bouquet of flowers. The groom is well dressed in his three piece suit and is displaying a poor version of a pensive expression. He appears to be uncomfortable, while his bride seems significantly more relaxed. The couple were photographed at a studio in the town of Saalfeld, which is the capital of the Saalfeld Rudolstadt district of Thuringia. The town is located in the valley of the Saale River.  (SOLD)
