HANDSOME YOUNG MAN: KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN : REIDSMA STUDIO : CABINET CARD c1890s

This cabinet card features a handsome young man with a composed, serious expression. His piercing eyes are steady and direct, suggesting confidence and a sense of purpose. He sports a neatly groomed, full mustache that accentuates his strong facial features, and his dark, wavy hair is styled close to the head with a modest wave. He is dressed formally in a three-piece suit typical of the late 19th century, consisting of a dark jacket with a subtle pinstripe, a matching vest, and a white high-collared shirt adorned with a cravat or tie tucked neatly into the collar. A pocket watch chain is visible just below the vest’s center buttons, a common accessory for men of the era. The photograph was taken by Reidsma Studio, as indicated by the imprint on the bottom mount. The ornate script spells out “Reidsma” alongside the photographer’s monogram and location: Kalamazoo, Michigan. Research into Mr. Reidsma reveals that the photographer was likely John Reidsma, a Dutch-American who operated a photography studio in Kalamazoo in the late 19th century. His work is known for its clarity and careful composition, often capturing the middle class and professional residents of the area during a time of industrial growth in Michigan. The presence of the brown line framing the image—also called a “rule line”—was a stylistic element commonly used in cabinet cards from the 1885–1895 period. This, along with the fashion and card style, helps date the photograph to the early 1890s. On the reverse, written in pencil, is the name: Mrs. R. J. Welch, 837 W. Walnut. The address is likely a local address for Kalamazoo itself or a nearby city. It is quite likely that Mrs. R. J. Welch was the wife of the man pictured. During this era, it was common for women—especially wives—to manage household affairs, including the commissioning and ordering of photographic portraits from local studios. Her name inscribed on the back may indicate ownership or responsibility for this photograph, perhaps sent or shared with family members.

PRETTY WOMAN WEARING A CHOKER IN WAYLAND, MICHIGAN

A pretty young woman poses for her portrait at the Philley photographic studio in Wayland, Michigan. She is wearing a frilly dress and a dark choker. She is posed to look away from the photographer and has a somewhat aloof expression. The photographer, Silas Philley (1845- 1926) is listed in “The Directory of Early Michigan Photographers” (2014). He operated in Wayland between 1888 and 1894. Philley was raised in Steuben County, New York. His early jobs included working as a laborer and shoemaker. He began his photography career in Wayland but also worked as a photographer in Kalamazoo  and Bloomingdale, Michigan. For part of his later photography career he worked in a partnership  (Evans & Philley). Philley was married twice. He outlived both of his wives, Thirza (11 years his junior), and Lizzie. In 1920 he was working again with shoes; this time as a shoe repairer. Philley did an excellent job creating this image. The subject is well posed and the close-up perspective enhances the portrait.

WINTERIZED LITTLE GIRL IN KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN

KALAMAZOO FRONT_0009

The young girl featured in this cabinet card portrait seems to be very prepared for a cold Michigan winter. She looks adorable in her fur trimmed coat and matching fur hand warmers. The photograph is a product of the Abbey studio in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Lewis Clark Abbey (1838-1904) was a photographer from 1876 through at least 1900. He was located at 303 East Main Street between 1887 and 1889 which therefore this photograph was taken between those years.

YOUNG GIRL WEARING TIC TAC TOE DRESS IN KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN (1890)

tictactoeThis little girl is posing for the photographer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The photographer is Wood and the date on the front of the card indicates that the photograph was taken in 1890. This cute but serious little girl is wearing a dress with a tic tac toe design pattern. I think tic tacky toe is a better description but I do wonder if in the 1890’s someone besides this girl’s mother thought the dress was cute. Incidentally, the game of tic tac toe has been around for centuries. To view other photographs by Wood, click on the category “Photographer: Wood”.
