This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series named “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France” (The Most Beautiful Women of France). This series is about the Provinces of France, and the model for this image represents La Lorraine. Note that the woman in this photograph is wearing a pretty smile. This postcard is no.18 in the series. There were a number of different series published. The Province series was one of the more popular series. The models in this series represent different French Provinces and wear traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This postcard was published by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s.  Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images The photographer of this postcard portrait is Guillaume. Although the 1900’s was the “golden age” of erotic photography, photographers who took such risque photos had to use discretion. In 1908, nudity in photographs was banned in France and photographers had to cover nude women images with strategically placed undergarments or other materials. Nude images had to circulate on the down low. They were sent in the mail inside of envelopes. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

This series is about the Provinces of France, and the model for this image represents La Poitevine. Note that the woman in this photograph is wearing a pretty smile. This postcard is no.9 in the series. There were a number of different series published. The Province series was one of the more popular series. The models in this series represent different French Provinces and wear traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This postcard was published by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s.  Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images.The photographer of this postcard portrait is Jean Agelou (1878-1921). Agelou was a French photographer of the 1910’s and 1920’s who is best known for his erotic and nude photographs. He was born in Egypt and not much is known about his private life. Agelou generally used models between the age of 20 and 24 years-old. He had a favorite model. Her name was “Fernande” and in addition to modeling, she was Agelou’s lover. Although the 1900’s was the “golden age” of erotic photograph, photographers who took such risque photos had to use discretion. As a result, Agelou signed his work “JA”. In 1908, nudity in photographs was banned in France and photographers had to cover nude women images with strategically placed undergarments or other materials. Nude images had to circulate on the down low. They were sent in the mail inside of envelopes. Fernande remained popular and her erotic photographs were enjoyed by soldiers on both sides during World War I. Jean Agelou died in 1921; the result of a car accident. His brother George, who managed Jean’s business, also was killed in the crash. (SOLD)

Postcard 1 is a vintage real photo postcard featuring silent film actress Florence Vidor (1895-1977). Florence was born in Houston, Texas. She began working in silent films due to the influence of her husband, King Vidor. He was a film director, film producer, and screenwriter. The pair married in 1915. Her first film contract was with Vitagraph Studios in 1916. She became a well known actress after her appearance in “Hail the Woman” (1921). Florence was noted to be one of early Hollywood’s great beauties. During the 1920’s, she was a major star for Paramount Pictures. She was the leading lady to actors Sessue Hayakawa and “drag star”, Julian Eltinge. She also acted for director Cecil B. DeMille. Sound films brought about the end of her performing career. In fact, she had so much difficulty with sound films, that she retired from acting before finishing the movie in which she was appearing. Florence divorced her husband in 1924. She married the talented and popular classical violinist, Jascha Heifetz in 1928. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1945. This photo portrait postcard can be found in the collection of the National Museum of American History (Smithsonian Institute). This vintage postcard is uncommon. SOLD

FOUR AMERICAN TRACK STARS : OLYMPIC GAMES 1924 : TWO MEDALS : NOYER : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features four American track stars at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. Pictured are Jackson Scholz, Charles Paddock, Emerson Carlysle Norton, and George Hill.  Jackson Scholz (1897-1986) was a sprinter. He was the first person to appear in sprint finals in three different Olympic games. He won two gold medals including one in 1924 (200m). He was depicted by actor Brad Davis in the movie “Chariots of Fire” (1981). After his retirement from track, he became a successful writer. Charles Paddock (1900-1943) fought in World War I and then ran track at USC. In the 1920 Olympics, he won a gold medal (100 m) and a silver medal (200 m). In 1924, he once again won a silver medal (200 m). Like Scholz, Paddock was also portrayed in “Chariots of Fire”. Paddock competed in the 1928 Olympics, but won no medals. After the Olympics, Paddock had management positions in Newspaper publishing. In 1926, he appeared in a silent film, “The Campus Flirt” with pretty Paramount starlet, Bebe Daniels. During World War II, Paddock died in an Alaskan plane crash with Major General William Upshur. Paddock, who was a Captain, served on the General’s staff. Paddock was inducted into track’s hall of fame in 1976. Emerson Carlysle Norton (1900-1986) competed in the decathalon. In the 1924 Olympics, he won the silver medal in that event. George Hill (1901-1992) was a sprinter and he competed in the 200 m and finished fourth. A year later, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an economics degree. One of the more popular series was one in which models represented different French Provinces by wearing traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This postcard was edited by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s. Many of his early postcards were reproductions of artworks. He also produced illustrated patriotic postcards during World War I. With the onset of the 1920’s he began producing postcards of children and women. Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images. Wristwatches were introduced in 1869 and became popular at the turn of the century. This postcard is no.21 in the series. There were a number of different series published. This postcard was published by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s. ENID BENNETT : SILENT FILM AND STAGE ACTRESS : MAID MARIAN IN ROBIN HOOD

This vintage real photo postcard features Australian silent film actress, Enid Bennett (1893-1969). She was mostly active in American films. She was born in Australia and attended an an acting and elocution school in Perth. In 1910 she joined a touring theatrical company. Two years later she joined the Fred Niblo – Josephine Cohan touring company. She understudied for Cohan and would consistently receive positive reviews. In 1915, Enid began to appear in Australian films. Also in 1915, Enid came to the United States and made her American theatrical debut in “Cock O’ The Walk” at the George M. Cohan theater on Broadway. She soon was appearing in important roles in American films. One of her more famous roles was playing Maid Marian in Robinhood (1922) with Douglas Fairbanks. By 1923, her career had slowed. However, she made the transition to sound, appearing in two Jackie Cooper films. She nearly comletely retired in 1933. Her final film role was in the Marx Brother’s “The Big Store” (1941). The IMDb reports that Enid had 52 film credits between 1916 and 1941. Bennett married Fred Niblo in 1918 and their marriage ended in 1948 upon Niblo’s death. In 1963, she married American film director, Sidney Franklin. Enid’s two sisters, Catherine and Marjorie Bennett, were also actresses. The card was published by Cinemagazine (Paris Edition). The postcard is part of a series (No.139) The portrait of Bennett is by Alfred Noyers studio in Paris. The postcard dates back to circa the 1920’s and is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY WOMAN WEARING NEGLIGEE APPLIES LIPSTICK IN FRONT OF A MIRROR (FRENCH BOUDOIR POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty woman applying lipstick in front of a large mirror. The woman is wearing a negligee. It is uncertain whether she is getting ready to go to bed with a lover, or if she is just getting dressed and applying make-up upon rising. This risque photograph was taken by Julian Mandel (1872-1935). He was one of the most famous photographers of female nudes during the early twentieth century. He worked in Paris, France and his photographs became well known in the 1910’s through the 1930’s. His images were published by such firms as Alfred Noyer, Les Studios, P-C Paris, and the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft (NPG). Mandel produced many erotic postcards. He photographed his models indoors as well as outdoors. He often posed his models in classical poses and he was a master at utilizing toning and soft lighting. It is reported that Mandel participated in the German avant-garde (new age outdoor) movement. Mandel, as well as other photographers of nude models, produced photographs that were postcard sized, but never meant to be sent through the mail. In fact, it was illegal to post these nude images. These nude photographs tended to be privately collected. Although Mandel listed his name on his nude photographs, most photographers chose to remain anonymous. Experts compare Mandel’s work to that of photographer Julian Walery, another avant-garde artist who was known for his deco style nudes produced in the 1920’s.
