FASHIONABLE BLACK WOMAN IN RENO, NEVADA

This Cabinet Card captures a pretty young Black woman posing at the studio of Rifenburg and Dowe in Reno, Nevada. The woman is beautifully dressed and the details of her elaborate dress are easily seen in the closeness and clarity of this image. Note the woman’s dark gloves and that she appears to be holding a cane, or perhaps, a parasol.

That’s an unusual dress! I can’t say I’ve seen anything like it before. It has an odd neckline (pinned at CF/neck?) with that contrast ruffle, and the fabric looks like it is cotton, and the small-town dressmaker styling of the contrast bands. Nice.

There was no name on the reverse of the photograph. When there are any clues to the identity of a subject appearing in a cabinet card, I will always let the viewer know in my description. Good luck in your research and would love to have you describe it in another comment. Perhaps one of the visitors to the cabinet card gallery can provide you with information or photographs that you may be searching for.
