VICTORIAN STAGE ACTRESS IN COSTUME IN STEUBENILLE, OHIO

A young woman poses for her portrait at the studio of Filson & Son in Steubenville, Ohio.  The woman is likely a stage actress and is dressed in a somewhat daring fashion. She is carrying a picnic basket as she prepares to walk through a swung open gate. The basket has a checkered napkin covering the food she is carrying. I it a funny detail or my illusion of the eye? I see an animal’s (wolve’s) face on the front of the basket – maybe she was costumed for acting as “Little Red Riding Hood”?

Been a good while and no one has picked up on this … so for what it is worth: The costume reminds me of ‘Patience’ (Gilbert & Sullivan). She often was posed holding an empty basket or water bucket … picnic basket? … well, there were so many productions and variations of that comic opera. Just a thought.
