A FASHIONABLE WOMAN FROM JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY

STEINER_0007

A fashionable young woman holding a flower poses for her photographic portrait at the J. H. Steiner studio in Jersey City, New Jersey. She is wearing earrings and rings. She appears to be wearing a corset judging by her shapely figure. Her ethnic origin is unknown but it is unlikely that her family came to America on the Mayflower.

It is quite possible that this young woman is Cuban American. Jersey city borders Union City, which was once know as Havana on the Hudson. Even today, many Cuban Americans live there.

What a beautiful photo. I have so many questions about her !

I make sure to write name and date on my family photos b/c the lack of such information on old photos makes for too many mysteries and I didn’t want my own descendents wondering who is whom and when enjoy my photo albums. Lack of that sort of info does prompt lots of great stories as I wonder abt the person in the pic but I really would like to be able to have something definite to go by, as well !

Such a shame when people do not have presence of mind to write date of pic. Hope I never did that, Want everyone I ever knew/loved/admired, etc. acknowledged. We owe them that.
Want so badly to leave that legacy to my children. Here we are, doing ok, getting by, what about our so-called working class before us. It was so difficult. As kids so many of us heard “we lived through depression, you will never know how bad that was.” No, we won’t. Thank you parents for all you have done for us.
