GORGEOUS WEDDING PORTRAIT OF A GERMAN COUPLE

This vintage real photo postcard features a very handsome looking German wedding couple. The bride and groom look very serious on their special day. They are both very well dressed. The bride is wearing a beautiful veil and note the lovely bouquet of flowers that she is holding. A faint embossed stamp gives a clue concerning the photographer. The word “Birkenfeld” is visible. “Birkenfeld” is the name of the location of the photographer’s studio. The photographer’s name is Stadelmanz. The message on the reverse of the postcard appears to be written to Fritz, the signer’s friend. Hopefully a cabinet card gallery visitor (the vast unpaid research department) can leave a comment with a translation of the message.This vintage postcard portrait is most likely from the 1920’s or 1930’s and is in excellent condition.

PORTRAIT OF A FRENCH BOY AND HIS BICYCLE

This vintage real photo postcard features a well dressed young boy posing with his bicycle. The boy is wearing a black armband. Black armbands were first utilized as a sign of mourning in 1770’s England. This postcard is of French origin and was published circa 1910. YOUNG MAN WEARING A FUR COAT AND FUR HAT IN SEAFORTH, ONTARIO

The young man in this photograph is well prepared for a cold Canadian winter. He is wearing a fur coat and fur hat. The photographer who took this portrait is William F. Tate who operated a studio in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. This vintage photograph measures about 6″ x 4 1/4″.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A WORLD WAR I ERA AMBULANCE AND IT’S CREW

This vintage real photo postcard features a World War I era ambulance and two members of it’s crew. This postcard presents a number of questions. Is this a military or civilian ambulance? The attendants are wearing uniforms but are they military uniforms? The windshield of the ambulance has a cover and two very small windows. Is this windshield military issued? After doing some research, it is clear that this postcard pictures a civilian ambulance. A box on the running board of the vehicle has printing which states that the ambulance (or the box) was “presented by Messrs. Dorman Long & Co. Ltd.”. Dorman Long is an engineering company which does consulting as well as manufactures equipment for the construction of long-span bridges, power stations, and other large building structures. At it’s creation, the company was based in Middlesbrough, in northeast England. The company was founded in 1875. A logo on the the side of the ambulance indicates that the emergency vehicle was part of the St. John Ambulance Association. This group was founded in 1877. In 1887 they began it’s first uniformed first-aiders brigade. The organization continues today and has become international. There are 40 national organizations and 500,000 volunteers worldwide. The eight pointed Maltese Cross is a component of all the different national logos. This historic postcard has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).  SOLD

HANDSOME GENTLEMAN WITH A HANDLEBAR MUSTACHE IN HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT (CARTE DE VISITE)

This carte de visite portrait features a well-dressed handsome gentleman wearing a handlebar mustache. This photo as taken by S. H. Waite who operated a studio in Hartford, Connecticut. Stephen H. Waite (1832-1906) is known for a photograph he took of African American orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The Connecticut Historical Society’s website offers a brief biography of Stephen Waite. He was born in Massachusetts and as a young man was friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson (essayist, poet), John Greenleaf Whittier (abolitionist, poet), and Theodore Parker (Unitarian minister, Abolitionist). He opened his Hartford photography studio in 1863 and conducted business until 1879 when he was succeeded by Charles Stuart. He later worked as a photographer in Kansas City, and later retired and died there. This cdv photograph has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER POSE WITH A STUFFED MULE IN DENVER, COLORADO

This vintage real photo postcard features two women posing with a stuffed donkey. The donkey is wearing a banner that says “Denver”. The photograph was taken by the Colotex studio which was located in Denver. My guess is that “Colotex” stands for “Colorado/Texas”. Perhaps the photographer had lived and/or worked in both states. I would also posit that the subjects in this photo are mother and daughter. The “AZO” stamp box indicates that this postcard was produced between 1904 and 1918. The postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

THE MUSKEGON 6: A GROUP OF PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT

Six young women gathered at the studio belonging to William McComb (1844-?) in order to have their photograph taken. The studio was located in Muskegon, Michigan. What is the connection between these women? The woman seated in the center front row of the photo has an open book on her lap. Perhaps the young ladies are students. More is known about the photographer than about the young women. William McComb grew up on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was of Irish descent. By the time he was fifteen years old, McComb had developed an interest in photography. In 1859, he volunteered to become the assistant of a visiting photographer in the area. He learned the business and photography skills necessary to pursue the career of being a photographer. His career path took him to jobs in galleries in Ottawa and Montreal. He then moved to the United States where he met Muskegon photographer, J. D. Westervelt. The two men decided to work together, and the partnership lasted for just one year. In 1879, McComb opened his own photo studio. He soon became the most popular photographer in Muskegon. In 1895, a devastating fire destroyed his studio and it’s equipment as well as his collection of 40,000 negatives. McComb opened a new studio and rebuilt his business. Besides photography, he had a strong interest in weather forecasting and in 1893, he joined the US weather bureau. His duties included raising flags to notify mariners of approaching weather conditions. A photo of William McComb can be seen below. This cabinet card has gold beveled edges.   SOLD
