PORTRAIT OF THE MOST ADORABLE BABY IN MUSCATINE, IOWA

This cabinet card portrait features the most adorable baby ever photographed in Muscatine, Iowa. Thanks to an inscription of the reverse of the photograph, we know the name of this photogenic child. The notation states “Please give this to Cora Freddie(?) Guthrie. Taken when 3 1/2 months old. She is now over a year”. The notation is signed “Evelyn”. The photograph was taken by the Clifford & Son studio in Muscatine, Iowa. The studio was operated by Charles Clifford and his son Frederick. Charles Clifford had a studio in Newton, Iowa in the 1880’s and 1890’s. The Photographic Journal of America (1893) announces that Charles and his son opened a studio in Muscatine. The Photographic Times (1895) makes mention that the father and son had mauufactured a “flash light machine”. The Photo Beacon (1897) notes that the Clifford & Son had won some awards at a photography exhibition.   (SOLD)

GENTLEMAN WITH A NOTABLE BEARD IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (RARE FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER)

Regular visitors to the Cabinet Card Gallery know that this writer has a bit of an obsession with photographs of interesting beards and mustaches. The fellow posing for this cabinet card earns a spot in the “Beards (Only the Best) category. You can view the beard collection by clicking on the aforementioned category. A. M. Gorman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, produced this image of an interesting looking gentleman. Research yielded some surprising information about the photographer. A. M. Gorman is a female photographer whose full name was Annie M. Gorman. She was listed as a photographer in the 1881 Philadelphia city directory. She also appears in the 1880 US census which lists her occupation as photographer. At the time of the census she was 36 years old and single. Preliminary research yielded very little information about Miss Gorman. A story is waiting to be written about this pioneering female photographer. I wonder how many of her photographs still survive. PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY TEENAGE GIRL IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

This vintage real postcard features an attractive young woman. She appears to be in her teenage years. Her photograph was taken by Florencio Bixio and he operated a studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bixio specialized in studio portraits, wedding portraits, and photos of entertainers. He also was a correspondent for the magazine “Caras and Caretas”, as well as a producer of photo postcards. Between 1900 and 1930 he opened photography studios in partnership with two other photographers. These studios were called “Bixio and Merlino” and Bixio and Castiglioni”. He was of Italian descent and emigrated to Argentina in 1896. He died in Buenos Aires in 1933. The message on this postcard indicates that it was written in 1922. SOLD

FOUR LOVELY YOUNG WOMEN POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN BERLIN, GERMANY

This cabinet card portrait features four lovely young women, probably sisters, posing for their portrait in Berlin, Germany, The photographer of this image is Carl Muller. Printing on the reverse of the photograph advertises that the photographer had won photography awards in Freiburg (1897) and Rouen (1899). The ad also indicates that English and French were spoken at the studio. The owner of this photo numbered (bottom border) each woman and identifies them on the back of the photograph. From left to right, the girls names are Ella, Emma, Bertha, and Helene. Emma is the oldest of the four, while Helene is the youngest. Their birth years are listed next to their names. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE BROTHER AND SISTER DUO: MEET CELIA AND MANUEL AGENOR

An adorable little boy and his sister pose for this vintage real photo postcard portrait at an unidentified studio. The photograph appears to have been taken outside but I have my doubts. I am pretty certain that I see a backdrop in the background. This image, based on some of it’s companion postcards, is likely from Argentina. The children in this photograph are intensely staring at the photographer. A message on the reverse of the card provides a bit of information about the children. The note is written in Spanish and states the the girl’s name was Celia Agenor and she was six years of age at the time the photo was taken. The boy’s name is either Baron Manuel Agenor or just Manuel Agenor. The Artura stamp box reveals that the postcard is from sometime between 1908 and 1924. This vintage postcard is in good condition (see scans).

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN WEARING A FEATHERED HAT AND CORSAGE IN BERLIN, GERMANY

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a pretty young woman. She is wearing a corsage, a feathered hat, and a necklace and earrings. She shows much poise in front of the camera. Either she has much experience being photographed, or the photographer excels at setting up poses. This photograph was taken at the Wertheim studio located on Leipziger Street in Berlin, Germany. It is possible that the name Wertheim actually represents a photo studio in a department store. Wertheim was a large German department store chain which had four stores in Berlin. The chain’s most famous store, Leipziger Platz, was constructed in 1896. The store featured 83 elevators and an atrium with a glass roof. SOLD

YOUNG COUPLE AND THEIR LITTLE GIRL IN DERBY, CONNECTICUT

An attractive young couple and their little girl pose for their portrait at the Morse studio in Derby, Connecticut. The little girl in this photograph is absolutely adorable and her smile is priceless. Her love for her mother is quite evident. The mother in this photograph is wearing a pretty dress and seems to be enjoying her intimate moment with her child. The photographer of this image, Thomas N. Morse, did an excellent job of capturing the joy that this family appears to have experienced while having their portrait taken. This vintage photograph measures about 6 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

LUCY GERARD : BEAUTIFUL FRENCH STAGE AND FILM STAR : (AKA LUCY MAREIL)

Image 1 is a vintage postcard that features French actress Lucy Gerard (1872-1941). She appeared both on stage and in film. She began her stage career in 1888 at the Theatre de la Renaissance and continued her career in France through 1900. She was absent from the performance scene for quite awhile until she returned to the stage with a “new” name, Lucy Mareil. During her stint away from the stage, she became an antique dealer. Equipped with her new name, Gerard landed numerous roles in theater and cinema from 1911 to 1923. In  The IMDb credits Gerard with 24 film roles. The IBDb reports that she appeared in one Broadway play, “A Night with the Pierrots / Sesostra / The Whirl of Society” (1912). Lucy Gerard was a very pretty actress and her photo on this postcard shows her in what appears to be a Middle Eastern costume. On the top left hand corner of the front of the card is the word “Vaudeville”. At the time that this photo was taken, Miss Gerard was appearing at the “Theatre du Vaudeville” in Paris. The photographer of this postcard photo was Charles Pierre Ogerau (1868-1908). He was a Frenchman and was considered an excellent photographer. He was also known to be an anarchist activist at the beginning of the twentieth century. Ogerau opened his photographic studio on boulevard Montmartre in around 1885. He specialized in photographing actresses and his subjects included Cleo de Merode and Emma Calve. This vintage postcard portrait is uncommon.   (SOLD)

Image 2 is a Cabinet Card portrait of the Miss Girard. She looks beautiful in this photograph. She is dressed in a fancy gown. This photo was taken at the celebrated Reutlinger studio. The Reutlinger Photography Studio was opened by Charles Reutlinger in Paris in 1850. Reutlinger was of German descent. The studio took portraits of many of the world’s beautiful, rich and famous people of the era. In 1880, Charles’ brother, Emile (1825-1907) took over operation of the studio. He was joined by his son Leopold (1863-1937) in 1883. Leopold began running the studio in 1890 and operated the business until 1930 when he lost an eye in an accident involving a champagne cork. A stamp on the reverse of  this cabinet card reveals that it was formerly owned by Culver Pictures of New York City, New York. Culver Pictures has been collecting photographs and illustrations from the 19th and first half of the 20th century, since 1926. These pictures are used in books, films, and other forms of media. At the time that this cabinet card was stamped by the company, Culver Pictures was located in New York City. (SOLD)

TWO WELL DRESSED SIBLINGS AND A MESSAGE IN A LANGUAGE I CAN NOT IDENTIFY

A pair of well dressed young siblings are the subjects of this vintage real photo postcard. These are cute kids. The little girl is wearing a long necklace with large beads and has a small purse on her lap. The boy three piece suit makes him look older than his years. Note his cap; it appears to be leather. There is a message on the reverse of this postcard that is in a language that I am unable to identify. I would appreciate any help with that task, from any Cabinet Card Gallery visitor that may recognize the country of origin of this written language. After doing some research, it appears to me that the language is Russian. I am not particularly confident with that assessment. This postcard is very likely from the 1920’s. The postcard has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY YOUNG WOMAN IN MT. LAKE, MINNESOTA

This cabinet card portrait features a lovely sweet young woman with beautiful dark eyes. She is wearing what I consider to be an unusual dress. Note the black pennant shaped pieces of fabric attached to her dress. The photographer of this image is Jacob D. Schroeder of Mt. Lake, Minnesota. Schroeder was born in Russia in 1858 and arrived in Minnesota in 1873. He was a photographer for ten years and then became a manager of a telephone company in Mountain Lake. In 1903, he became a representative in the legislature. Other government experience included holding office as Justice of the Peace, School Board Secretary, and Postmaster. SOLD
