This vintage real photo postcard features actress Ida Lytton. Sketch Magazine (1902) printed her photograph and the caption states that she was about to make her theatrical debut. She performed in musical theater and I was able to locate very little of her biographical information. She was the daughter of actor, Sir Henry Lytton (1865-1936). He was a very prominent English actor and singer. He was associated with Gilbert and Sullivan roles. The photo for this card was taken by the Rembrandt Studio. The postcard was published by the German firm, Rotophot. This portrait postcard has been trimmed and due to that, should be rated as in overall fair condition. However, the image itself has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features actress, Pearl Lyndon. She used a variety of other names including Madame Rosario. It is interesting to note that she was the wife of the photographer who took the photograph for this postcard. The photographer was Louis Saul Langfier.The pair married in 1903. This postcard is rare and information about Miss Lyndon is sparse. She grew up in Scotland. She ran a theater school for young children. She taught music and dance and claimed to be a professor. In 1920, a police news magazine reported that the and a live in man, were assaulted by their housekeeper and her son. The housekeeper denied the charge and said that Pearl was trying to engage her employment at a nightclub and criminal activity. There was another report of Pearl being attacked. She suffered broken teeth and was threatened by a man with a revolver. The assault took place in a dance club.By 1920, she and her live-in partner were running a London dance club that drew much attention from the local police. She was fined for selling alcohol without a license. Someone at the hearing referred to her establishment as a “disreputable place”. Pearl added more clubs to her portfolio and at least three of her clubs were raided by the police. There were reports that opium was being sold at her clubs. In 1924, at age 36, Pearl was arrested by the police in Fife, Scotland. She and her partner had split up, and he accused her of harrassment, and assault. He claimed she hit him on the head with a hammer, knocking him out. He stated she then turned on the gas in an attempt to kill him. She was also accused of hiring two men to threaten her ex with a razor. It was a “he said. she said” trial but at the end, Pearl was sentenced to two months in jail. When she was released from her imprisonment, she disappeared from the newspapers. It is interesting that research revealed much of Pearl’s nefarious behavior, and none of her history on stage. This cabinet card features a young boy dressed up in a fireman’s uniform complete with helmet. He is posing with a serious expression trying hard to play the part of an adult fireman. To make the portrait even more realistic, he is holding a fire axe. This image is another example of a cabinet card portrait that attempts to “adultify” children. The cabinet card gallery includes images of children dressed as sailors, soldiers, and even brides and grooms. Many of the children’s portraits show them dressed in adult-like glamourous or elegant clothing. It appears that parents at the turn of the century had the same propensity that parents have today to rush their children to adulthood. Unlike today’s children, the children of the cabinet card era really did have to become adults in their later teenage years. Prolonged adolescence was not invented yet. This cabinet card portrait features a pretty teenage girl dressed in high fashion. The manner in she is dressed and the fact that she is holding a scroll and flowers; strongly suggests that she is being photographed in connection with a religious ceremony. Initially her appearance was suggestive of her being a bride. Her youthful appearance and the scroll convinced me that she is likely making her confirmation. This photograph was taken at the Genelli Studio in St. Louis, Missouri. The studio was operated by Melzar Whittlesey (M.W.) Starks. He was born in Illinois in 1851. At age 21, he became a photographer apprentice in St. Louis. A short time later, he partnered with the Hulbert Brothers to build what many considered to be, the best portrait studio in the state. Starks moved to Sioux City Iowa in 1883. He opened a photography studio there.The Hulberts stayed in St. Louis and remained in business until 1898. Starks retired from his professon by 1910. This cabin card portrait has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

This cabinet card features a portrait of a pretty young woman. She is fashionably dressed and wearing an exquisite hat. Her image was produced by the Devereaux Brothers. Who are the Devereaux Brothers? The Devereaux Brothers sounds like the name of a Cajun band.” Why don’t y’all come down to the Bayou Cafe and hear the Devereaux Brothers play some zydeco.” Research does not support the notion that Morrice, Vernon, Byron and Ashley played in a Lousiana band together when they weren’t producing photographs. In actuality, research reveals that the Devereaux Brothers operated their photography studio in North Lansing, Michigan. SOLD
This cabinet card portrait features a well dressed young dark eyed girl. Her hair is styled in long ringlets. She is wearing earrings and an interesting necklace. The photographer is S. H. Cope of Norristown, Pennsylvania. Norristown is six miles northwest of Philadelphia. The town was named for Isaac Norris, a member of the colonial Pennsylvania legislature. Norris ordered the casting of the state house bell that later became known as the Liberty Bell. This cabinet card photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

This antique postcard features a pretty young woman. The artist is Alice Luella Fidler (1883-?). The card is part of the American Girl series (no.40). In the early twentieth century, Alice and her two sisters, Pearle Eugenia Fidler LeMunyan (1880-?), and Elsie Catherine Fidler (1892-?); specialized in creating drawings of beautiful girls and women. In addition to “American Girl” they produced series entitled “Glamour Girl” and “College Lad and Lassie”. They were wonderful illustrators and most of their drawings were published as postcards. This postcard was published by Edward Gross. The publishing firm was located in New York. (SOLD)
This Pocket Magazine is entitled “The Complete Life of Lena Horne” (Celebrity Scrapbook). Lena Horne (1917-2010) was a very talented African American dancer, actress, and singer. She was also a civil rights activist. The 66 page magazine was published by Pocket Magazines in 1955. The publication is chock full of Black/lWhite photographs. The magazine measures 4″ x 6″. SOLD
