This cabinet card portrait features an adorable and fashionable child. He is intently gazing at the photographer. This photograph was produced by the George Ames Studio. Ames operated his studio in Lynn, Massachusetts (94 Market Street). Langdon Road reports that his city directory listing appeared in at least 1895 through 1898. SOLD

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN : FLOWERS IN HER HAIR : RPPC

This vintage postcard features a pretty young woman wearing wearing a hair band and flowers in her hair. Note the fantastic detail of the flowers. The dark haired postcard model has a wonderful smile. This postcard was published by Rotophot as part of a series (No.3676/3). The publishing company was based in Germany but had affiliates around the world. The postcard has minor corner wear and edgewear is evident on it’s left border. Overall, the postcard is in good condition (see scans).

FAMILY PORTRAIT IN LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK (PHOTOGRAPHED BY THE ASTORIA PHOTO STUDIO)

long island city 1 This cabinet card is likely a family portrait. How everyone in the image is related, is anybody’s guess. The family members are well dressed. They don’t look like they’re having fun. In fact, this is a very serious group. This photograph was taken by the Astoria Photo Studio, located in Long Island City, New York. An ad for the studio was printed in “The Daily Star” (1920). The advertisement copy declares that the studio was established in 1871. Long Island City is located along the East River in New York City’s borough of Queens.   SOLD

RUGBY AUTOMOBILE : DURANT MOTORS : AN AMERICAN COMPANY : VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH

This vintage photograph, from the Bryan Goodman Collection, features a little known brand of an American automobile. “The Rugby”  was produced by Durant Motors Company of New York City. The vehicle was nearly identical to Durant’s Star car. The Rugby was designed for export markets. The Star car could not be exported due to copyright issues. There already was a company called Star Motors that was located in the British Commonwealth. The Rugby was built from 1923 through 1928. In 1928 the Star name was changed to Durant and the cars were exported under the Rugby name until 1932. Rugby’s were built in Elizabeth (New Jersey), Lansing, (Michigan), Oakland (California), and Leaside (Canada).This photograph has a inscription on it’s reverse. The inscription states “Out with the Rugby for a Spin”. Mom certainly has a wide smile. It appears that her driving adventure was lots of fun.  (SOLD)

JEWISH NEW YEARS PHOTO : HEBREW, GERMAN, & ENGLISH : CUTE CHILDREN : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card photograph actually served as a Happy Jewish New Years (L’shana Tova) card. This photograph was likely given to friends and family by the proud parents of the two children seen in the photo. Printed on the card are New Years greetings written in Hebrew, German, and English. This photograph was produced by the Charyn Studio located on Grand Street in New York City. 
Victor Charyn (1876-1928) was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States.  Some research would likely uncover more biographical information about him. A similar Jewish New Year’s photo from the Charyn Studio can be found at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF JEANNE SAMARY :ARTIST MODEL FOR RENOIR :STAGE ACTRESS : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card photograph features a portrait of French stage actress, Jeanne Samary (1857-1890). Samary was born into a family of artists. Her father was a cellist at the Paris Opera and she had two aunts and a grandmother who were actresses at the the Comedie-Francaise. At age fourteen, she entered the Conservatoire and in three years later, won the first prize for comedy. She made her debut at the Comedie-Francaise in 1874. She is not as well known for her acting as for her posing for several portraits by Pierre Auguste Renoir. She was his model between 1877 and 1880. She appeared in Renoir’s painting, “Le Dejeuner des canotiers” (Luncheon of the Boating Party). Samary was an actress who was perceived as a woman “of the people”. She could not get major roles on the stage. She played minor roles and often was cast as a maid. Samary wanted to be a famous actress but instead is famous for being one of Renoir’s models. VIRGINIA MAYO : BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS : PICTUREGOER SERIES : WARNER BROTHERS

This vintage real photo postcard features American actress and dancer, Virginia Mayo (1920-2005). Virginia grew up in St. Louis. She began attending her Aunt’s acting school at age 6. She also took dancing lessons. She began her professional acting career after graduating high school. She began acting and dancing at the St. Louis Municipal Opera Theatre. She then toured the vaudeville circuit for three years. She appeared in some short films and then was “discovered” performing at a Broadway area night club, by Samuel Goldwyn. Goldwyn appreciated her for her talent as well as her beauty. He signed her to an acting contract with his company.  In 1941, she appeared on the Broadway stage with Eddie Cantor. Her first starring role occured in 1944 when she appeared in a film with Bob Hope. The IMDb reports that Mayo had 70 film credits between 1939 and 1997. She performed in one Broadway play (1941-1942). This vintage postcard is part of the “Picturegoer” series (No. D 541). She posed for the postcard’s portrait while under contract with Warner Brothers.  SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman holding a stringed instrument. The caption under her photo states “Sweet Strains”. A musical strain is a series of musical phrases that creates a distinct melody in a piece. A strain is considered a section of a musical piece. A strain may also refer to the sound of music being played. This postcard is part of the Life Model Series (No.748). SOLD

STEVENS LACROSSE : PRETTY WOMAN : ARTIST UNDIVIDED POSTCARD : 1906

This undivided back vintage printed postcard features a pretty young woman holding a lacrosse stick and waving a Stevens banner.  She is wearing an “S” on her jacket. Stevens Institute of Technology is located in Hoboken, New Jersey. The school was founded in1870 and it is one of the oldest technological universities in the United Staes. The artist has created a fun postcard with nice colors. The artist of this card is not identified.  This postcard was published by M. Machol (Hoboken, New Jerey). The card was copyrighted in 1906.  SOLD
