This real photo postcard is quite intriguing. Who is this pretty young woman behind the sheer veil and wearing this middle eastern type dress. Is she a native of the Middle East? Is she an actress? Is she a fashionista that is wearing the latest style? I tend to rule out the possibility of her being from the Middle East. I do so because her clothing appears more fashionable than functional and her stylish shoes seem to be very not Middle Eastern. My guess is that the lady is was recording her preparations for a masquerade event (for our benefit, eventually … as it turns out?). I think she looks great … shoes and all. How about those eyes?
Yes, there was an absolute mania for all things Arabian, or “Oriental” in the 1920’s, after Valentino wowed moviegoers as “The Sheik.” The men about town in those days were even referred to as “sheiks” when they stepped out with their “shebas.” I agree that this mademoiselle was probably dressed for a masquerade. Really nice photo–the pose is “show biz” but the photographer gets away with it, due to the costume.
