This cabinet card photograph features a friendly looking elderly man. His countenance and expression exudes a certain softness. Not only does this gentleman look like a nice guy; he also has a fantastic beard which features no moustache or connecting sideburns. The photographer of this image is Charles Burr Marsh (1861-?). He was born in Michigan, and married in Ohio in 1887 to June White (1867-1933). He had studios in Fayette, Wauseon, and Galion, Ohio. In 1908 he became a charter member of the Professional Photographers Society of Ohio. He served as an officer of the organization. A 1915 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine indicates that Marsh also worked as a newspaper photographer. This cabinet card captures the bond between grandfather and granddaughter. Grandfather looks rather serious as he stares at the photographer. He has an interesting wide beard. His right hand grips his chair as if he is sitting in the dentist’s chair waiting for a tooth extraction. The granddaughter has bright eyes and appears to be holding back a smile. She has her right hand gently and affectionately resting on her grandfather’s arm. The photographer and the locale of the studio are not identified. This touching cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).
This vintage photograph features an elderly man and woman doing something unusual. What’s happening in this image that is so unusual, you might ask? The odd thing about this photo is that the old couple appear to be holding hands. This is not commonly seen in photographs of this “no public displays of affection” era. The man has a wonderful walrus mustache. He looks dressed up in his three piece suit. The woman is bundled up in her outfit as if it is winter. Both are wearing hats. It is difficult to determine if this photograph was taken inside or outside of a photo studio. This photograph measures about 4 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ and is in very good condition (see scans).
