A HANDSOME GENTLEMAN IN VIENNA (CARTE de VISITE)

This carte de visite portrait features a handsome well dressed gentleman with a carefully manicured beard and mustache. The photographer of this cdv photo is Rudolf Krziwanek (1843-1905). He operated a photographic studio in Vienna, Austria between 1870 and 1905. He also ran a summer studio in Ischl (Austria) between 1879 and 1900. He took portraits of the Hapsburg Court. His photographs are part of the collections in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Portrait Gallery (UK), and the New York Public Library. At this point in time, there are three of Krziwanek’s photos in the Cabinet Card Gallery. Krziwanek was also an inventor. In 1905, he received a patent for a device which was used in an “air gas system”. He committed suicide that same year. Print on the reverse of the photograph states that the studio was next to the Cafe Weghuber, a popular coffeehouse. The establishment was in business between 1806 and 1865. It was founded as Cafe Eichhorn and renamed Cafe Weghuber in about 1840. Later, a park was built in front of the cafe and it became a venue for concerts and large parties. Since the Cafe Weghuber went bankrupt in 1865, it is safe to say that this photo was taken before 1865. This carte de visite photograph has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans).

TWO SWEET AND WELL DRESSED YOUNG SISTERS IN DERBY, ENGLAND (CDV)

The little girls featured in this cartes de visite are adorable. They also are well dressed in their dresses adorned with frills and bows. Both appear a bit suspicious of the camera or cameraman. This photograph was produced by the Winter studio in Derby, England. Advertising on the reverse of the photograph (see below) indicates that the gallery was “patronized by her majesty the Queen”. Many photographic studios of the time made the claim that they were photographers to royalty. William Walter Winter (1842-1924) established his photo studio in 1867 at 45 Midland Road in Derby. He specifically built the structure to house his studio. Amazingly, the business still exists. Winter trained under photographer Emmanuel Charles. In 1864 he married Sarah Charles, his mentors widow. Winter operated his business until his retirement in 1910. The studio has been in the Derbyshire King family since then. Note the portrait of William Walter Winter (see below). This photograph is from the early phase of the cdv era. The photo has no identification information concerning the subject or the photographer. STRIKINGLY PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN MONTLUCON, FRANCE

pretty woman cdv 1 This cartes de visite features a pretty young woman posing for her portrait at the Heron studio in Montlucon, France. She is well dressed and well coiffed. She appears to be holding back a full smile. Her eyes are bright and engaging. Preliminary research yielded little information about Monsieur Heron. The Cabinet Card Gallery exhibits another photograph by Heron. That image is a photo of a bride and groom. It can be seen by entering the name “Heron” in the search box. Montlucon, the studio’s home, is a town in central France on the Cher River. Adolphe Heron (1865-?) was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He got married in Paris (1887) and at that time he was working as a photographer there. He began working in Montlucon in 1893. This cdv photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

EXQUISITE PORTRAIT OF A GERMAN COUPLE BY EMILIE BIEBER (CARTES DE VISITE 1870’s)

Emilie Bieber is one of my favorite photographers of the Cartes de Visite/Cabinet Card era. The quality of her work soars above her contemporary photographers. View more of her images by clicking on the category “Photographer: Bieber” or just put her name in the search box. This CDV captures a lovely immaculately dressed couple posing in Bieber’s Hamburg studio. The woman’s hair is beautifully done. She is wearing a cross on a chain. The gentleman is wearing formal clothes and also is wearing a ring and pocket watch. Bieber had a second photo studio which was located in Berlin. Emilie Bieber ran her Hamburg studio for 1852 through 1872 when she was joied by her nephew, Leonard Berlin-Bieber. She died in 1884. This cdv likely dates back to the 1870’s. The reverse of the photograph lists prizes garnered by Bieber at various photo exhibitions including Berlin (1865), Paris (1870), London (1872), and Vienna (1873).   SOLD

HANDSOME BEARDED MAN IN SUSQUEHANNA, PENNSYLVANIA (CARTES DE VISITE)

A well dressed handsome middle aged man poses for his cartes de visite (cdv) portrait at the Harding Studio in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. The gentleman has an interesting beard. His handsome face is visible because he lacks a mustache. The photographer of this image is Addison Delavan Harding (1847-1908). At one point in time, his studio was located at 42 Main Street in Susquehanna. His obituary appears in the magazine “Snap Shots” (1908). The article reports that he worked over 40 years as a photographer. He was born in Binghamton, New York. He learned the business of photography while in the employ of a photographer in Towanda, Pennsylvania. Harding opened a studio there in 1865. He married Fannie V. Harding (Shipman) (1847-1945) in 1867. He moved his business to Susquehanna in 1873. After Hardings death, his son (D S Harding) took over the business and operated it until 1942. Fanny lived to the age of 98 years-old. Addison and Fannie Harding are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, Pennsylvania.

PRETTY AND FASHIONABLE TEENAGER IN WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS (CARTES DE VISITE)

A pretty young woman poses for her portrait at a studio belonging to photographer C. R. B. Claflin in Worcester, Massachusetts. I suspect that the woman in this photograph is in her teenage years. She is handsomely dressed in her high collared tailored dress. She is wearing a pin on her dress as well as earrings. The reverse of this cartes de visite image reveals that the photograph was taken in 1879, during the transition from cdv’s to cabinet cards. Note the misspelling on the reverse of the cdv. The word “Photographer” is spelled as “Photographir”. It seems unlikely that Mr. Claflin was unaware of the printer’s error. My guess is that he felt a need to not waste his money and utilized the card stock despite the mistake. Charles Ripley Burnett Claflin (1817-1897) was a photographer during many decades. He operated studios in Worcester during part of the 1850’s through part of the 1890’s. On of his images appears in the book American Victorian Costume in Early Photographs (2013). Claflin was married to Emma Claflin.   SOLD

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL ON THE DAY OF HER FIRST COMMUNION IN THOUARS, FRANCE (CARTES DE VISITE)

This cartes de visite features a long haired pretty young girl having her portrait taken on the day of a religious ceremony (first communion). Note the roses on her long veil and her necklace. She is has a cross which can be seen on the forefront of her dress on the right side of the photograph. She also has a purse. The girl is wearing white gloves and is holding a small bible. The photographer of this CDV is A. Chevy. He operated a studio in Thouars, France.  (SOLD)

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL HOLDING A TOY IN BERLIN, GERMANY (1911 CARTE DE VISITE)

This item is a cartes de visite (cdv) featuring a cute long haired little girl sitting on a chair and posing at the Erna studio in Berlin, Germany. She has bows in her hair and is holding a toy in her lap. She is wearing a beautiful lace dress. Take note of the chairs nicely carved arm rests. This cdv is in excellent condition. An embossment on the bottom right of the image indicates that the photograph was taken in 1911.

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL SHOWING RESTRAINT IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS (CDV)

This is an unusual cartes de visite portrait because of the method utilized to hold the posing child in an optimal and safe position to be photographed. It was not unusual to restrain a young child during a photograph session but usually the restraints are hidden. The safety belt was usually hidden under clothing, a blanket or some other material. In addition, sometimes a child’s parent might hold the baby in place while being covered by a blanket or some other material. In addition, to showing the safety belt, this image is a wonderful portrait of a little girl. The photographer of this cdv is Amory Nelson Hardy (1835-1911). He was born in Cumberland, Maine. He was married to Angeline Davis (1833-1920). Early in his photography career he worked in Bucksport, Maine. He then moved to Boston and during his work there had a studio on Washington Street (1868, 1879-1887) and Winter Street (1873-1878). These dates are only a partial representation of his career. This photograph was taken at the Winter Street studio. It has been brought to my attention that it is very possible that this little girl may not be tied into her seat at all. Instead, both the black bows around her sleeves as well as the wide black band around her abdomen may be symbols of “mourning”. I certainly agree that the ribbons around her sleeves are typical mourning symbols. However, I have not seen similar mourning bands employed around a subject’s waist or abdomen. I wonder what visitors to the cabinet card gallery think about these black bands. Please feel free to leave a comment.
