LILA LEE : AMERICAN SILENT AND TALKIE FILM STAR : “CUDDLES” : VAUDEVILLE

This vintage real photo postcard features leading lady screen actress, Lila Lee (1905-1973). She performed in both silent and early sound films. She was born in New Jersey and her family were German immigrants. The family relocated to New York City. Her family encouraged her participation in “kiddie review shows”. The energetic and outgoing child was given the nickname of “Cuddles”. The name stuck to her throughout her acting career. Her juvenile acting kept her quite busy and she required private tutors for her education. Lila acted in vaudeville fo an eight year period. In 1918 she was signed by Jesse Lasky (Famous Players) for a film contract. In a short time, the company became Paramount Pictures. Her first feature film performance received much public approval. She was just 13 years old at the time of her film debut. Lila quickly became a leading lady and starred with performers like Conrad Nagel, Gloria Swanson, and Rudolph Valentino.  In 1922, she won the first WAMPAS Baby Star Award. Lila was a very popular leading lady during the 1920’s. Her films were popular with critics and audiences alike. She was one of the few stars that made a successful transition from silent to sound films. In the 1930’s she made some bad career decisions and had bouts of tuberculosis and alcoholism. As a result, her latter film roles were mostly in B movies. In 1936, her film career basically ended as the result of a scandal involving the sucide of a man that she was dating.  Lila Lee lied to the District Attorney when she reported that the victim left no suicide note, when in fact she knew that he did. Lee’s personal life was unstable. She was married and divorced three times. Her son, James Kirkwood became a successful playwright and screenwriter. His credits include “A Chorus Line” and “P.S. Your Cat is Dead”.  The IMDb lists 103 credits in Lee’s filmography (1918-1967). This vintage postcard was published by Alfred Noyer as part of the “Les Vedettes de Cinema” series. The postcard was released while she was employed by Paramount Pictures. The card is of French origin. (SOLD)

COMTESSE DE NOAILLES : POET, NOVELIST, FEMINIST : ALFRED NOYER : PHOTO BY HENRI MANUEL : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Comtesse Mathieu de Noailles (1876-1933). She was a Romanian French writer, poet, and socialist feminist. Her birth name was “Princess Anna Elixabeth Bibesco-Bassaraba de Brancovan”. Her father was a prince and her Greek mother was a musician. In 1897 she married the son of the 7th Duke de Noailles. The pair became very popular in Parisian high society. Anna de Noailles wrote three novels, many collections of poetry, and an autobiography. Her first work was published in 1901. She was a part of the elite group of intellectuals, artists, and authors of her place and time. A New York Times article from 1929 reported that she was one of the finest poets in France. Anna was a very popular woman and a number of great artists painted her portrait. Auguste Rodin sculped her image in 1906 and the sculpted bust resides in the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York City. Anna won many literary awards during her career. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer. Anna’s photo portrait was taken by the esteemed photographer, Henri Manuel (1874-1947). Manuel opened a portrait studio in Paris in 1900. Manuel specialized in portraits and photographed many celebrities from the world of sports, theater, art, and politics. He was also the official photographer of the French government for 30 years. This postcard was produced in France.  Note the light blue mark near the top right hand corner of the card. The postcard is in overall Good Condition (see scans). The photograph seen on this postcard was used as a cover photo for a biography of Anna Noailles. This particular photo is uncommon or rare.

PRETTY WOMAN PLAYING TENNIS (VINTAGE FRENCH REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage postcard features a pretty woman playing tennis. She is at the net preparing to hit the ball. It appears that the photographer wasn’t too concerned about his model’s grip on the tennis racquet. Apparently, some tennis lessons before the photo session would have been helpful. However, this is a very sweet postcard and the woman is wearing tennis fashion of the era as well as a wonderful smile. The postcard is of French origin and was published by A. Bergeret of Nancy, France. The postcard is in good condition with some foxing (see scan) and the postcard is unused. The reverse of the postcard indicates that it once resided in an album. (SOLD)

GILDA DARTHY : SCANDALOUS FRENCH ACTRESS : RISQUE

This vintage real photo postcard features French actress, Gilda Darthy (1878-1952). She was an actress on the Paris stage. She was known for being fashionable and was the subject of many photo postcards and photographs. Her stage costumes were created by some of the most famous costumers of their time. She had striking red hair. She was a passenger on a 1910 flight from Algiers to Timbukto and her flying on the plane was used to publicize the New French air service making the flight. During World War I, Darthy was one of the French actresses employed to portray “La Patrie”, a symbol of France. She made her American debut in “The Ironmaster”. The New York Times (1916) reported on her performance and the review was very favorable.  The reviewer described Darthy as being among the most gifted and skillful actresses of the french theater. The wrtier added that “she has all the natural grace and technical skill” of the schooled actresses of the french theater. The reviewer also commented about Darthy’s appearance by stating she had “a moderate amount of gallic beauty”  besides her talent. Finally, the theatrical writer reported that Darthy had an extraordiary amout of emotional powers and a lovely voice. Darthy also appeared in the New York productions of Sapho (1917) and “La Rafale” (1917). In addition to being famous for her acting and fashion roles, Darthy was also a headliner in the area of noted scandals. The New York Times (1917) reported that actress, Irene Bordoni filed suit in the New York Supreme Court against her husband, actor Edgard Beekman, on the grounds of alleged misconduct with Darthy. Darthy was also sued for damages for alienating Boroni’s husband’s affections. Beekman was Darthy’s leading man in a theatrical production at the time of the affair. A similar situation occured with actress Cora Laparcerie and her husband Jacques Richepin. That particular conflict escalated to the point of physical violence between the two women. In 1929, Darthy won damages in a court case, after being injured in an automobile accident. The injuries caused her to have to cut her “trademark” long hair and damages were justifiable because she refused to “deceive the public by wearing a wig”. This vintage postcard portrait of Gilda Darthy was taken by Paul Boyer, the esteemed celebrity photographer. Boyer’s studio was located in Paris, France.  (SOLD)

EXTRAORDINARY PORTRAIT OF PRETTY FRENCH JOCKEY (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This fantastic vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman wearing the attire of a jockey. Note her jodhpurs, silks, cap, riding crop, and boots. This portrait begs the question, is she really a jockey? Could she be a steeple chase rider? It is also possible that she is a model. This photograph was taken at La Photo Mecanique in Paris, France. The card appears to have been trimmed and measures 5.0 x 3.25 inches. The postcard itself was made in England and is in very good condition.

FRENCH SOLDIERS & THEIR ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILE: 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE BATTLE OF FRANCE

This vintage snapshot features four French soldiers and an antique car. I believe the car is a Citroen, but, I wouldn’t bet on it. The soldiers appear to be enjoying themselves. An inscription on the reverse of the photo reveals that the image was taken on 4/24/40. One suspects that these men had little idea that in just over two weeks from that date, they and their country would be under vicious attack. The Battle of France began on 5/10/40 and it soon became the “Fall of France”.  (SOLD)

Anyone who collects vintage theatrical/film actress postcards, is very familiar with the subject of this real photo postcard. Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980) is an actress that was widely photographed. The reason for the production of so many postcards featuring Miss Robinne is that she was very popular during her era. Certainly, one of the reasons for her popularity, was her great beauty. Robinne was born in France and was a student at the Paris Conservatory. In 1904 she joined the company of Sarah Bernhardt and later joined the Theatre Michel in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her career soared when she began performing at the Comedie-Francaise in 1907. She remained with the company until 1938. She made her film debut in the 1906 production of “Le troubadour”. Two years later she had her first huge success in “L’assassinat du Duc de Guise” (1908). She is considered by many to be the first French star of the silent film era. She charmed her audiences with her beauty and excellent acting. Gabrielle Robinne shared her time between stage and film. The IMDb reports that she appeared in nearly fifty films between 1906 and 1973.She was known for “Conquered Hate” (1913,) “Struggle for Life” (1914), and “La reine de Saba” (1913). Robinne was married to actor Rene Alexandre from 1912 until she was widowed in 1946. Her work in the theater and film was recognized by France when she was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of Merit. 

Postcard 1  was published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France and was part of a series (no. 1342). The photographer of Robinne’s portrait seen on this postcard was Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. This vintage postcard was postmarked in 1905, It has a French stamp. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans). 

Postcard 2 was also published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France and was part of a series (no. 1730). Once again,  Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937) was the photographer. (SOLD)

He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. This postcard is part of a series (no.1282). MISS LEONIE YAHNE : PRETTY FRENCH COMEDIC ACTRESS : PHOTO BY LEOPOLD REUTLINGER

This vintage real photo postcard features French comedic actress, Leonie Yahne (1867-1950). She spent most of her career acting on the stages of Paris. She was an active performer between 1884 and 1917. In 1895, she was drawn in a stage role by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1913, Yahne appeared in a silent film short with actor, Max Linder. In 1911, Yahne was a victor in a lawsuit against a Paris entertainer named “Yane”. The lawsuit concerned the other actress using a name too similar to Yahne’s moniker.  Yahne was reported to be a society favorite who was expert with foils and horsemanship. It was also noted that Yahne’s driving style made her a terror on the roads of France. The photograph on this postcard was taken by celebrated portrait photographer, Leopold Reutlinger. His studio was located in Paris, France. He photographed many theatrical stars and other celebrities. SOLD
