LEILA NEGRA : FILM ACTRESS : SINGER : NURSE : TEDDY BEAR : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features German born film actress, singer, and nurse, Leila Negra (1930-). She looks adorable posing with her teddy bear. She spent the beginning of her career as a child film actress in the 1940’s, became a singer post World War II, and in the late 1950’s, she became a nurse. Her father was a British sailor who emigrated there from Ghana. He was not involved raising Leila. Her mom was the daughter of a white German woman and a Creole man from Martinique. Due to her mothers family not accepting the birth of Leila, her mother placed Leila in an orphanage where she remained for the first three years of her life. Her mother took her from the orphanage and moved to Hamburg to be near Leila’s grandmother. Leila’s mom worked as a musician. When Leila was ten years old, her mother died from a botched abortion. Leila’s parenting was taken over by her grandmother. Growing up, Leila was exposed to horrible racism. The Nazis ended her education and placed her into forced labor in a factory. Her film career was initiated by Joseph Goebbels, Germany’s Minister of Propaganda. He was recruiting black children to play African natives in government UFA films. Her film debut was in “Munchhausen” (1943). The IMDb credits her with six film appearances. In 1957, she began training as a nurse. Nursing became her second career. This cartes de visite features a portrait of a handsome young German soldier. He looks sharp in his uniform. The photographer of this image is L. Minzloff  and his studio was located in Leipzig-Gohlis, Germany. Gohlis is in the northwest part of Leipzig that was absorbed by Leipzig in 1890. This CDV is in very good condition.

HANDSOME MAN IN BERLIN, GERMANY

A handsome man poses for his portrait in this cabinet card photographed by a studio in Berlin, Germany. The name of the photographer is uncertain, since the font makes the name indecipherable. Hopefully, a visitor to this site will be able to identify the name and leave it in a comment. The fellow in this image is nicely dressed and displaying a pocket handkerchief. Jenny Jugo (1904-2001) was an Austrian actress. Her IMDb filmography reveals that she appeared in fifty-three films between 1925 and 1950. Jenny, as is evident in this vintage real photo postcard, was very beautiful. She was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her father owned a factory. She received her education in a convent. At age sixteen, she married actor Emo Jugo and the pair settled in Berlin, Germany. Their marriage was of short duration (1921-1922). She gave up her husband but not his last name. The German film studio, UFA, signed her to a contract in 1924. She struggled in the dramatic roles that she was given. By the end of the silent era, she was successful in comedies and specialized in that genre through the 1930’s. She often played perky, confident characters. She was often directed by Erich Engel. In 1935, Jugo played Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion. Writer, George Bernard Shaw was so happy with her performance that he invited her to act in all of his plays on the English stage. She made films during the Nazi regime until 1943, when she returned to her Bavarian home. She was in a relationship with film producer Eberhard Klagmann who worked on her final three post-war films. In 1950, she married actor and former co-star, Friedrich Benfer. She retired from acting at age forty-six. She was given a lifetime achievement award for her outstanding contribution to German cinema. The IMDb biography of Jugo describes her as a “lively brunet, dimple-cheeked actress with a tom-boyish, unaffected manner”. The writer of the biography contends that Jenny Jugo flirted with stardom but did not achieve it. This assessment may be too harsh. Postcard 1 was published by Ross Verlag and is part of the Luxusklasse series (no. 614).It is easily identifiable by the gold emblem on the reverse of the card.The postcard is larger than regular sized postcards. This vintage postcard measures about 4″ x 5 3/4″ and is in very good condition.   (SOLD)

 Postcard 2 features Miss Jugo in a risque pose. She is wearing what appears to be skimpy lingerie. Her pose and facial expression projects a “come hither” message. This vintage postcard was published by Iris Verlag as part of series (no. 5383). The photographer of this portrait is Erich Engel of Berlin, Germany. There was also a German film and theatre director named Erich Engel (1891 –1966) . As stated above, Engel directed Jugo many times. Engel is listed on the postcard for either being the photographer, or possibly the director of the film she was working on at the time. The reverse of this post card indicates that it once resided in an album. The card is in very good condition (see scans).

Postcard 3 was published by Ross Verlag as part of series (no. 5533/2). Miss Jugo’s  photographic portrait was taken by the Harlip studio, located in Berlin Germany. Gregory Harlip specialized in celebrity portraits. In 1937, Harlip left Berlin because of Nazi persecution. He relocated to London. Harlip died in 1945 and was succeeded by his wife who became one of the renowned society photographs of the 1950’s. She died in 1982. This portrait postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

Ethel Barrymore (1879-1959) was an outstanding American actress and a member of the famous theatrical Barrymore family. She was born Ethel Mae Blythe in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents were actors and she was the sister of John and Lionel Barrymore.  She was the great aunt of modern day actress Drew Barrymore.

Ethel Barrymore was considered by many to be the greatest actress of her generation. She was a major Broadway performer and first appeared there in 1895. She had roles in A Dolls House by Ibsen (1905).  She was a strong supporter of the Actors’ Equity Association and played a major role in the 1919 strike. She played in Somerset Maugham’s comedy, The Constant Wife (1926). She also starred in motion pictures beginning her film career in 1914.  Notable films included None but the Lonely Heart (1944) and The Spiral Staircase (1946). Around 1900, Winston Churchill proposed marriage to Barrymore but she refused. She later married Russell Griswold Colt in 1909 and had three children. She died of cardiovascular disease in 1959 at her home in California. The Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City is named in her honor.

Cabinet card 2 was produced by Napoleon Sarony, the famous celebrity photographer who’s studio was located on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Barrymore looks young and quite pretty in this image.  (SOLD)

The third portrait of Miss Barrymore appears on postcard 1, published by the Rotograph Company who operated in  New York City and Germany. This postcard portrait was taken by famed Chicago photographer William Morrison. He is well known for his excellent portraits of theatrical stars. He produced both real photo postcards and cabinet cards. This postcard is number HB/1422 of the “Rotograph Series”. The image on this postcard is color tinted. The fourth portrait of Ethel Barrymore is an uncommon one (postcard 2). The image provides a lovely profile view of this legendary actress. If you search for this exact postcard online, you likely won’t find it. This postcard was published by E. Frey & Company who operated in  New York City . Research reveals that postcards displaying the printed name of  “E. Frey” were actually published by the Souvenir Post Card Company which existed between 1905 and 1914. It was located at 268 Canal Street in New York City. The company was purchased by Valentine & Sons and the combined company became Valentine – Souvenir. This postcard was printed in Germany and is in good condition (see scan).

The fifth photograph (postcard 3) of Miss Barrymore was published by the Rotograph Company. This postcard portrait was taken by famed Chicago celebrity photographer William Morrison.This postcard is number B 662 of the “Rotograph Series”. The image has excellent clarity.

The sixth image (postcard 4) is a vintage real photo postcard portrait of Ethel Barrymore. The postcard was published by Albert Hahn who was based in New York City (200 Broadway) and Hamburg. Hahn operated his company between 1901 and 1919. The postcard was produced in Germany sometime in the decade of 1900-1910. The postcard is part of a series (no. 5271).  (SOLD)

Postcard 5 offers a profile view of Miss Barrymore. The postcard was published by the Rotograph Company as part of the Rotograph Series (No. A 112). The photographer of this image is Burr McIntosh of New York City. William Burr McIntosh (1862-1942) lived an interesting life. Among his job titles listed by Wikipedia, are photographer, lecturer, film studio owner, silent film actor, publisher of the “Burr McIntosh Monthly”, reporter, and radio and early film pioneer. His sister was Nancy McIntosh, a noted operatic soprano. He was a graduate of Lafayette College in 1884. His most noted film role was his appearance in D. W. Griffith’s film, “Way Down East” (1920). Wikipedia notes that he appeared in 53 films between 1914 and 1934. This vintage postcard is in very good condition.

RETA WALTER : GERMAN OPERA STAR : MURDERED BY EX BOYFRIEND AT AGE TWENTY : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a famous German opera singer who met a tragic end. In 1906, hours before she was to go on stage as Carmen, at the Opera Comique, Walter was murdered in her own home. She was killed by her ex boyfriend, Karl August Hesse, who suspected that Walter was planning on becoming engaged to Juan Raventos, a Spanish Tenor. Hesse committed suicide after killing the 21 year-old Miss Walter. Hesse was a frustrated opera singer who could not find success. He had a history of being jealous of other men. He also had a history of physically abusing Walter in his jealous tantrums. Walter had tried to end the relationship with Hesse but he would not comply. The police found letters from Raventos in Hesse’s apartment. Raventos had written to Hesse telling him that he would not end his relationship with Walter.  This postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co.. The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. This antique postcard is in good condition (see scans).

VIOLET PALFERAY : PRETTY DANCER : MEMBER OF THE TILLER GIRLS DANCE TROUPE 

This lovely vintage Rotophot real photo postcard features dancer and postcard model, Violet Palferay. She appears on more than 40 Rotophot series postcards. Palferay was a member of the very popular Tiller Girl woman’s dance troupe. The group began in London in the 1890’s and kept growing until there were dozens of Tiller Girl troupes spread around the world. Palferay appears on a Getty image taken in 1908 entitled “Girls of Berlin”. Variety Magazine described the Tiller Troupe of Girls as very American, even though they were English; and that they were “good to look upon, well dressed and a good show”.  This postcard was published by Rotophot (RPH) as part of a series (1577/78). The company was based in Berlin, Germany. Rotophot eventually morphed into Ross Verlag.  (SOLD)

SWEET LITTLE GIRL : ST. BERNARD DOG : RPPC : (1905)

This antique divided back real photo postcard features a sweet little girl and her large dog. The girl is adorable and is flashing a wonderful smile as she looks directly at the photographer. The dog is cute and appears to be a Burmese Mountain dog, St. Bernard, or a similar breed.  The postcard was published by Rotophot and is part of a series . (series 62 no. 7652). Rotophot was a German company that eventually morphed into Ross Verlag. (SOLD)

MONA MARIS : INTERNATIONAL FILM ACTRESS : BETTE DAVIS EYES : HOLDING SWEET DOG

This uncommon vintage real photo postcard features actress Mona Maris (1903-1991). The postcard was published by Ross Verlag (No.3887/1). The photograph is from the Hanni Schwarz studio. Schwarz was a German female photographer and her work was praised in “American Photography” (1909). She was a well known professional photographer in Germany during the early 1900’s. She is thought to have worked until the 1930’s. The subject of this photo, Mona Maris was born in Argentina. Her mother was Spanish Basque and her father was French Catalan. At the early age of four, Mona was orphaned. She grew up with her grandmother in France where she was educated in a convent as well as in Germany and England. At age 19, she spoke four languages. It was during World War I that Mona decided to be an actress. While she was in school in France, she and her classmates wrote, directed and acted in plays to entertain nearby troops. Upon graduation, she went to England to live, where she stayed two and a half years. She was introduced to the President of the United Film Association by the Argentinian ambassador to Germany. She was signed to a five year contract by Germany’s Universum Film AG productions. She began her film career in either 1924 or 1925. After just four films in Germany, she began a Hollywood career in United Artists “The Apache” (1925). Despite knowing multiple languages, the onset of sound films created a problem. Her English was described as “almost unintelligible”. Between 1931 and 1941, she starred in 19 Spanish language versions of  successful American films. The movies were produced by Fox Films. She has been described as “sultry” and “sleepy eyed”. The IMDb credits her with 53 film roles between 1925 and 1984. Mona was married twice and had no children. She died and was buried in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This vintage postcard features Mona Maris posing with an adorable smoll dog. Maris is very pretty. Note her eyes. They have been compared to Bette Davis’s eyes. (SOLD)
