Note the detail and the quality of the bannister on the porch steps and the porch. They’re certainly not making bannisters the way they used to. This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a pretty young woman. She is wearing a corsage, a feathered hat, and a necklace and earrings. She shows much poise in front of the camera. Either she has much experience being photographed, or the photographer excels at setting up poses. This photograph was taken at the Wertheim studio located on Leipziger Street in Berlin, Germany. It is possible that the name Wertheim actually represents a photo studio in a department store. Wertheim was a large German department store chain which had four stores in Berlin. The chain’s most famous store, Leipziger Platz, was constructed in 1896. The store featured 83 elevators and an atrium with a glass roof. SOLD

This carte de visite features a well dressed man posing for his portrait at the L & F Caron studio in Amiens, France. Note the gentleman’s bushy mustache and his bowler hat. In addition, check out the box on which the fellow is resting his right hand. I wonder if the box served a purpose or if it was purely decorative. The gentleman seems very poised in front of the camera. The Caron studio was located in Amiens, a city in northern France. Leon Jean-Baptiste Victor Caron was born in 1841 in Amiens. His father, Alfred, was a printer and bookseller. Upon his father’s death,, Leon’s mother managed the bookstore. At the end of the 1860’s his mother opened a photography studio which she named “Veuve Alfred Caron”. Interestingly, the translation of “veuve” is “widow”. Leon’s mother chose to name the studio under her late husband’s name, rather than her own. This was likely the result of best business practices in a misogynist society. At an unknown date, Leon took over the studio from his mother. For a time, he had a partner named F. Caron, who was likely, Leon’s brother. Leon won many medals for his photographs, including a gold medal in Paris in 1892. He was still an active photographer in 1901. Remarkably, the Caron studio remained in business until the 1960’s.

This cabinet card photograph features a lovely teenage girl posing for a profile portrait. I am hypothesizing about her age, but I can not be too far off the mark. She is nicely dressed and is wearing a stylish straw hat. Note the American flag pin attached to the hat band. Perhaps this image was taken on July fourth. This photo was taken at the Rothschild studio in Chicago, Illinois. The studio was located on State Street and Van Buren. The studio was within the A. M. Rothschild Department Store and the store was opened at the aforementioned address in 1881. The store was bought out by Marshall Fields in 1923. (SOLD)
This cabinet card portrait features a young man and woman posing for their portrait at the Stewart studio in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Presumably, the couple are husband and wife. This is an interesting and unusual photograph. Note the man’s facial expression as he stares at his wife. I have been struggling to find the precise words to interpret his countenance. The best way that I could describe his expression is “incredulous bemusement”. He is looking at his wife out of the corner of his eye and seems amazed. I see no intimacy between this marital pair. They appear entirely disconnected. The woman’s feathered hat is on the floor in front of the couple. Interestingly, the man’s hat is given better treatment than the woman’s hat. The woman is holding her husband’s hat and keeping it off the dirty ground. The idea that she has to be the keeper of her spouse’s hat seems a bit subservient. However, we have to remember that this photograph was taken over one hundred years ago and gender roles were far different that they “generally” are today. SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features an attractive young woman who appears to be in her teenage years. She looks glamorous in her fabulous dress, her funky jewelry, and her large flower pinned to her dress. To top it all off, is her big hat with accompanying ribbons and feathers. The young lady has picked a pedal off the flower and one wonders if she is asking herself, “he loves me?, he loves me not?”. The game has French origin and it’s purpose is to ascertain whether a person’s object of affection reciprocates that affection. A pantomime version of this game is seen in the ballet “Giselle” staged in 1841. The teenage subject of this photograph exhibits an expression that exudes self-assurance and a good sense of humor. She also looks, forgive the term, “cool”. This vintage postcard has a French stamp and was postmarked in 1909. Note the creases in the top left hand corner of the reverse of the postcard. Overall, the postcard is in good condition (see scans).

The woman is further described as having a “butter wouldn’t melt expression”. This bespectacled young lady is dressed in all-white and is holding a white parasol. Her hat has feathers and seems to be preparing for flight. The photographer of this image is J. S. Fritz. This carte de visite portrait features a very cute little boy and his cute little dog. The child has his arm affectionately wrapped around the dog. Both the boy and his dog are sitting on a bench. The child is very well dressed. He is wearing a terrific cap. Advertising on the reverse of the cdv indicates that the photograph was taken at the Arena studio in Napoli (Naples), Italy.
