PORTRAIT OF TWO AFFECTIONATE YOUNG GIRLS AT THE BEACH

TWO GIRLS BEACH

TWO GIRLS BEACH 1 Two young girls pose for a vintage snapshot photograph as they sit on the sand at the beach. One girl has her arm affectionately around the shoulder of the second girl. The recipient of the affection is displaying a sour expression. Are the girls sisters? Could they be close friends? The answer is lost to history. The girls names are written on the reverse of the photo. I can only decipher one of the names. It is “Ingrid”. A stamp on the reverse of the snapshot indicates that the photograph was developed in Dresden, Germany. Dresden is the second largest city in Saxony. It is situated on the banks of the River Elbe. It is near the border of the Czech Republic. There are beaches along the Elbe and perhaps this image captures one of them. This photograph is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MOTHER AND HER TWO CHILDREN IN DRESDEN, GERMANY

This carte de visite portrait features a pretty mother and her two adorable children. The older child, a boy, is wearing a nautical style outfit. The younger child, likely a girl, is wearing a necklace. The mother in this image is wearing a most interesting dress. The flower and large polka dot pattern is more “busy” than usually seen in photographs from this era. The photographer of this image is James Buchanan Aurig (1857-1935). He operated studios in Dresden, Germany. Aurig’s self portrait can be seen below. Aurig began working as a photographer at the age of 15 in Chemnitz. In 1878 he workied for photographer Johannes Schumacher in Dresden. He next worked with various Dresden photographers. He opened his first photographic studio in 1887. He photographed portraits, wedding photos, and current events. At the turn of the century he began to travel with his photographic equipment to the homes of famous Dresden residents to produce home portraits. He also was known for his architectural photographs. He was one of the most prominent photographers in Dresden at the turn of the century. One wonders if James Buchanon Aurig was named after the 15th US President, James Buchanan (1791-1868). Buchanan was the US President between 1857 and 1861. Aurig was born in 1857, the first year of Buchanan’s presidency. Based on the dates I just cited, it’s very likely the photographer was named after the President.   (SOLD)

TWO FASHIONABLE LADIES IN DRESDEN, GERMANY

TWOLADIESTwo beautifully dressed women pose for a photographer in Dresden, Germany. The shorter woman clings securely to the taller women. Both are wearing leather gloves. It appears that the photographer of this image is the Thiele studio though it is unclear why the name “Otto Mayer” is also listed. Perhaps a knowledgeable visitor to the cabinet card gallery can offer clarification. Printing on the reverse of this photograph also indicates that it was taken in 1882. Photographer Hugo Thiele of Dresden is cited in the British Journal of Photography (1876). He was commended for producing a wonderful portrait of a child that had been published by a German publication.  Both of the women in this image are identified on the reverse of the photograph. The subjects names are “Nellie Leavet” (from New York) and “Gretchen Von Littichau” (from Dresden). Perhaps Miss Leavet was a friend or relative visiting Miss Von Littichau in Dresden and they commissioned this photograph to commemorate the occasion.

A WINTERS TALE: FATHER READS TO DAUGHTER IN RADEBERG, GERMANY

A proud papa reads to his young daughter as they pose for their portrait at the studio of Otto Richter, in Radeberg, Germany. The child does not seem to interested in the literary offering.  The book seems to be more of a historical picture book, or a pictorial magazine; rather than reading that would hold a child’s interest. Interestingly, the girl is bundled  in a winter coat and wearing a ski cap, while her father is wearing formal clothing. Radeberg is a small town located about 20 kilometers from Dresden, Germany. The town was started in 1872 after a brewery was established there. Today, Radeberger beer ranks as the ninth best selling beer among Germany’s breweries.
