DAPPER SAILOR IN UNIFORM

SAILOR_0002The Sailor in this Cabinet Card is posing at an unknown photographers studio at an unknown location. Perhaps the information is classified (just kidding). It is also a mystery which nations navy this young man is serving in.  Hopefully, an informed visitor can leave a comment identifying the nation this sailor represents. One can imagine that the sailor is on shore leave and wandered into a photographers studio to get a souvenir of his visit. He is looking quite dapper  in his uniform.

Kaiser Wilhelm II: The Last German Emperor and King of Prussia

kaiser

Wilhelm II (1859-1941) was the son of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia and Victoria, daughter of Queen Victoria of England. He served a period of military service. In 1888 his father succeeded as Frederick III. He died shortly after and Wilhelm became Kaiser at age 29.  Within two years he forced the resignation of Otto von Bismarck. He greatly increased the strength of the German armed forces. Following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, he greatly encouraged the Austrians against Serbia. This helped trigger World War I. When the war began he was excluded from military decisions by military commanders. In 1918 the German military collapsed. Kaiser Wilhem was forced to abdicate and went into exile in the Netherlands. This Cabinet Card portrait was photographed by G. Hansen of Hamburg, Germany.

Russian Army Soldiers in Kiev (1916)

enlisted_0002

Three enlisted men from the World War I Russian Army are pictured in this Cabinet card. The reverse of the card indicates that the photograph was taken in 1916 by the “Photo Studio of Y. S. Ivanchenko”. What exactly may have been on these soldiers minds.  In 1916 Russia, the Russian war effort was characterized by shortages, poor command, death, and desertion. The citizens were facing starvatio, inflation and a refugee problem. Soldiers and civilians blamed the incompetence of the Tsar and the government. By the end of the year Rasputin was killed and the Tsar was warned that the army would not support  him in event of revolution.
