NORTHPORT YACHT CLUB & HARBOR : LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK : RPPC

This vintage linen postcard features a pretty view of the Northport Yacht Club and Northport Harbor. Northport is located on the Northshore of Long Island. The town is at the edge of the Long Island Sound. Connecticut can be seen on the other side of the Sound. Note the wooden boats in the background. The Northport Yacht Club was established in 1899. It was located on Bayview Avenue. The club was established by a group of affluent men who worked in New York City but had second homes in the Northport area. Just a few weeks later a second yacht club, the Independent Yacht Club, was established on Woodbine Avenue. This club was launched for and by the local townspeople. In 1927, the Independent Yacht Club changed it’s name to the Northport Yacht Club. This club closed in 1944 and was replaced by the Edgewater Yacht Club in 1945. The club had no building until 1948. In 1952 the Edgewater club changed it’s name to the Northport Yacht Club. The building seen in this postcard photo is the Northport Yacht Club (formerly the Independent Yacht Club) located on Woodbine Avenue. This card was published by the Tomlin Art Company (Babylon, New York).  SOLD

HANDSOME SAILOR : USS FISH HAWK : NAVY : APALACHICOLA, FLORIDA: CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a young and handsome naval sailor in uniform. His cap reveals that he was part of the crew of the USS Fish Hawk. The ship was launched in 1879. Originally, called the USFC Fish Hawk, the ship was a fisheries science research ship. It conducted research and ran a large fish hatchery on board. The ship was operated by the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries. The Fish Hawk was the first large ship built by any country for the purpose of promoting fisheries. The ship operated during it’s 46 year career along the US eastern coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the ship also served in the US Navy in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and from 1918 to 1919. The sailor seen in this cabinet card portrait was serving on the ship during the Spanish-American War. The sailor had his photograph taken a the Ferris studio in Apalachicola, Florida. The city of Apalachicola is located on the shore of Apalachicola Bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico. The city was captured by the Union navy early in the Civil War. Before the late 19th century, Apalachicola was the third busiest port on the Gulf of Mexico. It was only behind New Orleans and Mobile. This cabinet card portrait is an interesting remnant of American naval history.  SOLD

HANDSOME SAILOR : NAVY UNIFORM : WEARING A MEDAL : HULL, ENGLAND : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a young and handsome naval sailor in uniform. He is wearing a medal on his jacket. He is likely a British sailor but that is only a hypothesis. This navy man was photographed by the Barry studio, located in Hull, England. The print advertising the studio, seen under the image, is in gold leaf style. This cabinet card photograph is in very good condition (see scans).  ADDENDUM:  A current resident of Hull has advised me that the young man in this photograph is not a sailor, but in fact, he is a schoolboy who attended the Trinity House Nautical School in Hull. The medal is some form of commemorative or school medal. I was also informed that this photo dates back to circa 1890-1900.

NAVAL CASUALTY MEMORIAL CARD FOR BRITISH SAILOR (HONG KONG, 1912)

This cabinet card is a memorial photograph of J. W. Stubbs who was accidentally killed in Hong Kong. Stubbs was a stoker (tended to the engine) aboard the H.M.S. Astraea. He died in 1912 and this cabinet card was made by his shipmates in his memory. The image of this smiling and handsome 20 year-old sailor, who died tragically, evokes much sadness. The Astraea was a cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was commissioned for service in 1895 and was active in World War I. She was scrapped in 1920. The photographer who made this memorial card was A. Hing  of Hong Kong.  (SOLD)

A SHIP CAPTAIN IN PANAMA : IDENTIFIED AS W. C. GIBB : CALM STUDIO : CABINET CARD

This photograph features a ship captain posing at the Calm Studio, located at the Plazuela De Alfaro in Panama. The card is inscribed to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and signed by W. C. Gibb. The captain is wearing a nautical uniform and it is unknown whether he is a military or a civilian sailor. Research reveals that the Alfaro Plaza may be named after Jose Eloy Alfaro Delgado (1842 -1912) who was a President of Ecuador who was a strong opponent of pro Catholic conservatism and whose views and actions caused him to be exiled to Panama in 1911. A year later he returned to Ecuador, where he was imprisoned; and then taken from the prison by a mob and executed.   SOLD

ADORABLE SAILOR BOY : PHILADELPHIA : CABINET CARD (1890)

Meet Willie Howard Smith. He was three and a half years-old at the time of this photograph, which was in 1890. Willie is adorable as he poses for his photograph in his sailor suit. He is wearing a wonderful cap which is covering his longish hair. The photographer of this cabinet card portrait is Kuebler, who was located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Research discloses some interesting information about the photographic studio. The studio was co-owned and operated by brothers William Kuebler and Louis H. Kuebler. They were very successful photographers and one of their photographs of Walt Whitman is very well known among those that study the great poet. A news article in The Photographic Times (1888) announces the “largest contract ever made in the photographic line” had been awarded to William Kuebler to photograph the members of the Mexican Typical Orchestra. In all, 4,750 photographs were ordered. The cabinet card has an extremely slight curl and is in overall Good Condition (see scans).

MAN AND TWO WOMEN POSE ON BOARD SHIP : ARTISTIC VERSO : BLACKPOOL, GREAT BRITAIN : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card of a man and two women posing aboard a ship, was photographed by D. Mitchell of Blackpool, Great Britain. The photographer, whose studio was located near a pier in the seaside city of Blackpool, utilized a relevant nautical theme. The backdrop is fantastic and the hanging rope held by the gentleman, and the ropes in front of the ladies, are a “great touch”. This is an unusual and fine use of background scenery and props. The South Pier was originally named the Victoria Pier. The pier opened in 1893 and served  vacation travelers to Blackpool. The subjects of this cabinet card image are likely tourists on holiday. Note the fantastic artwork on the reverse of the card. Wow! This portrait cabinet card has good clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN

A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).
