GORGEOUS PORTRAIT OF TWO IDENTIFIED SISTERS READING A MAGAZINE : RPPC : (1933)

This gorgeous vintage real photo postcard captures two young sisters posed reading a large magazine. The oldest child has a beautiful smile while her younger sister shows just a hint of a smile. Both girls are wearing identical hair bows. Embossed on the bottom right hand corner of the image is the photographer’s name, “Nadir”. Despite Nadir’s obvious talent, he should not be confused with the famous French portrait photographer, Felix Nadar. There is a story behind this portrait postcard. The card comes from the collection of George R. Wilson, a steward who served aboard the British battleship, HMS Barham.The children in this photo are Wilson’s nieces. They are named Daphney and Audrey Wilson. This photograph was taken in Portsmouth, England in 1933. This vintage real photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

THE PUBLISHER’S PAPER COMPANY IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE (1909) (POSTCARD)

This postcard features a view of the Publisher’s Paper Company which was located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The postmark on this postcard reveals that it was mailed in 1909. It was postmarked in South Berwick, Maine. The postcard was published by Canney’s Music Store which operated in Portsmouth.This postcard is in good condition. Although it is not very noticeable without close examination, there is some light staining on the top left quadrant of this card (see scans).

YOUNG CHILD WEARING FANCY ATTIRE IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This cabinet card features a portrait of a young child wearing fancy clothing. Note the large bow tie and the sash with tassels that serves as a belt. The photographer of this photograph is E. C. Nickerson. His studio was located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He is no stranger to the Cabinet Card Gallery. PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This cabinet card portrait features a lovely young woman with curly hair. She is wearing a ribbon around her neck as well as earrings and a collar clasp. The photographer’s use of lighting makes this image notable. The dark background against the woman’s white clothing makes a contrast which highlights the portrait. The young lady sort of “pops out” of the darkness. The photographer of this photograph is L. V. Newell & Company. The studio was located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. SOUTHSEA GIRLS REALLY KNOCK ME OUT: PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN

This vintage real photo postcard features a bejeweled pretty woman posing for her portrait at a photo studio in Southsea, England. My hypotheses is that the studio is called London Portraits based on the ink stamp seen on the reverse of the postcard. It is unknown whether the attractive subject seen in this photograph is a resident of Southsea or perhaps a visitor to this seaside resort which was established in the 18th century. The area is located in Portsmouth at the southern end of Portsea Island, Hampshire.

PRETTY WOMAN IN A FEATHERED HAT IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

A very pretty woman poses for her portrait at the studio of the Davis Brothers, located at 15 Pleasant Street, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is wearing a bustle and tailored jacket; as well as a fabulous feathered hat. A corset presents a flattering figure. Lewis and Charles Davis were pioneer photographers in Portsmouth They recorded thousands of images between 1856 and 1903. They produced stereoscopic cards and cabinet cards. A collection of their work is archived at the Portsmouth Athenaeum and 160 of their photographs were published in the book, “Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era”.

I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN

A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death.

UNIFORMED FIREMAN IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This photograph is a portrait of a uniformed fireman. The photograph is by L. V. Newell & Co. in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Research discloses that Newell began his work as a photographer in Concord, New Hampshire in 1856.  Six months later he moved to Portsmouth. He was one of 13 children of a prominent farmer. Newell is mentioned in his role as an event photographer,  in an 1893 publication of the Grand Army of the Republic (Portsmouth Chapter). ANOTHER FIREMAN IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This Cabinet Card captures the image of a young fireman in Steamer Company #4 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He is wearing his dress uniform as he poses in the photographic studio of E. C. Nickerson located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The badge on his cap discloses that he is a member of steamer company #4. The first steam fire engine was built in England by Braithwaite and Ericsson in 1829. Captain Ericsson came to the United States where he produced the Civil War  ironclad, the Monitor.  In 1840, the first steam fire engine was produced in the United States. An improved and successful steamer in the United States was designed in 1852. The steamer fire engine could produce as many as six separate streams of water. FORMALLY DRESSED COUPLE IN PORTSMOUTH, OHIO (WEDDING PICTURE?)

This Cabinet Card photograph captures a very well dressed couple at the studio of Lutz, in Portsmouth, Ohio. The couple may be posing for a wedding portrait, or perhaps, they’re dressed for another special occasion. It is interesting to note that the man, rather than the woman,  is sitting for this photograph. This is typical of many photographs of this time period. In modern day times it would be more common to see poses where the woman is seated and the man is standing. Research reveals that L. B. Lutz was a photographer in Portsmouth between 1896 and 1897. It was also discovered that John N Lutz was a photographer in Portsmouth between 1873 and 1879. John Lutz was born in Germany in 1842 and arrived in America in 1855. He studied photography with W. S. Porter in Cincinnati, Ohio for five years; before opening his own studio.
