BRIDE AND GROOM : MILITARY WEDDING : (1928)

This vintage real photo postcard is a wedding portrait of a uniformed military officer and his pretty bride. The officer is holding white gloves and has his hand on the hilt of his sword. The bride is wearing a wedding gown and veil. Her pose and expression indicates that she is a self assured woman. The previous owner of this postcard stated that the military man is a member of the Yugoslavian army. I am unable to confirm that to be true. The message on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the photograph was taken in 1928. (SOLD)

A WITCH AND HER CAULDRON :TIC TAC TOE DRESS LADLE & PUNCH BOWL : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card features an old woman sitting at a table, using a ladle to fill four glasses with a dark colored drink (potion). She is taking the drink from a pot on the table. The woman is wearing a most unusual dress. The dress has a tic tac toe like symbol on it. It would be interesting to know the meaning of the symbol. It would also be interesting to know what is happening in this photograph. Is the woman an actress on stage? Was she simply posed by a studio photographer using his props?  This cabinet card presents quite a mystery. (SOLD)

Anyone who collects vintage theatrical/film actress postcards, is very familiar with the subject of this real photo postcard. Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980) is an actress that was widely photographed. The reason for the production of so many postcards featuring Miss Robinne is that she was very popular during her era. Certainly, one of the reasons for her popularity, was her great beauty. Robinne was born in France and was a student at the Paris Conservatory. In 1904 she joined the company of Sarah Bernhardt and later joined the Theatre Michel in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her career soared when she began performing at the Comedie-Francaise in 1907. She remained with the company until 1938. She made her film debut in the 1906 production of “Le troubadour”. Two years later she had her first huge success in “L’assassinat du Duc de Guise” (1908). She is considered by many to be the first French star of the silent film era. She charmed her audiences with her beauty and excellent acting. Gabrielle Robinne shared her time between stage and film. The IMDb reports that she appeared in nearly fifty films between 1906 and 1973.She was known for “Conquered Hate” (1913,) “Struggle for Life” (1914), and “La reine de Saba” (1913). Robinne was married to actor Rene Alexandre from 1912 until she was widowed in 1946. Her work in the theater and film was recognized by France when she was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of Merit.

Postcard 1  was published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France and was part of a series (no. 1342). The photographer of Robinne’s portrait seen on this postcard was Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. This vintage postcard was postmarked in 1905, It has a French stamp. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

Postcard 2 was also published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France and was part of a series (no. 1730). Once again,  Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937) was the photographer. (SOLD)

Postcard 3 has a portrait of Robinne photographed by Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. This postcard is part of a series (no.1282). This postcard is in fair condition (see scans).

NATHAN HALE MEMORIAL : HUNTINGTON NY : HALESITE : REVOLUTIONARY WAR RARE : 1909

This vintage real photo postcard features the Nathan Hale Monument, located in Huntington, New York. After the battle of Long Island, the Briitsh occupied Huntington and the rest of the island. Nathan Hale, twenty one years old and a Yale graduate from Connecticut, volunteered to cross the Long Island Sound and gather intelligence on the British. He came ashore, and began his mission in Huntington. Hale was captured by the British and identified as a spy. He was hung in New York City. His last words are said to be “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”. A monument was erected in Huntington to honor Hale. Famed architect Stanford White created the original design. He also donated money to help pay for the monument. The cost of the memorial was about nineteen hundred dollars. The memorial was erected in 1894. Originally, the monument also served as a drinking fountain and it had two lamps to provide light at night. The monument was quite versatile. It also had a water trough for horses. Huntington also has another long time monument honoring Hale. It is called Nathan Hale Rock. This photo postcard was published by the Gildersleeve Shop. The card has a Northport (NY) postmark that is dated 1909. This postcard is rare. The house in the background of this photograph puzzles me. I would expect to see the town’s Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building or the towns historic cemetery instead. Perhaps there was a house that was adjacent to the memorial that I was unaware existed. Another possibility is that the photographer intentionally combined two photos to make it appear that the monument was in someone’s front yard. More investigation is required. This historic vintage real photo postcard has paper debris on it’s reverse from it’s former residence in an album. (SOLD)

BOY RIDES DONKEY : SMILING EAR TO EAR (RPPC 1900’s OR 1910’s)

This vintage real photo postcard provides a “feel good” impact on it’s viewers. A young well-dressed boy rides a tired looking donkey and he is wearing a smile that extends from ear to ear. He seems to be having the time of his life and his smile is infectious. A nice smile serves people well in life. Marilyn Monroe must have been in agreement about the importance of smiling when she said “A smile is the best makup any girl can wear”. Note that the donkey has a pennant hanging on his forehead. The pennant has “Illinois” printed on it. We can probably posit that this photo was taken in the “Land of Lincoln” (Illinois). This postcard has an “AZO” stamp box indicating that it was produced sometime between 1904 and 1918. The postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage postcard (1948) sends “Greetings from Winchester, Virginia. The postcard displays two drawings of sites to visit in the town of Winchester. A visitor can see both the headquarters of George Washington (Revolutionary War) as well as the headquarters of General Phillip Sheridan (Civil War). The postcard also brags about the region’s locally grown apples. The card shows and “exaggeration drawing” of a giant apple that requires it’s own railroad car to transport it. Winchester is located in Northern Virginia. It is more specifically, in the Shenandoah Valley. Since 1924, Winchester has been the home of the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom festival. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND HER TWO YOUNG DAUGHTERS IN CAMBERWELL, ENGLAND

camberwell

This vintage real photo postcard presents a portrait of a mother and her two young daughters. Some may claim that this is actually a portrait of three sisters. I’m sticking to my interpretation, though I recognize that my hypothesis is debatable. The two young children are cute and appear unintimidated by the photographer or the photographic process. The older daughter is holding some flowers. This photo postcard was produced by Moore’s Studio which was located in Camberwell, a district in South London, England. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
