TWO YOUNG CHILDREN OUT FOR A DRIVE

outforadrive12020-06-17_231404 outforadrive22020-06-17_231508This vintage real photo postcard features two young children sitting in a faux automobile. Most likely, the pair are siblings. The youngest of the two is behind the wheel. Judging by the facial expression of the driver, the roads must have been very treacherous that day. The little girl in the photo is flashing a wonderful smile. This studio photograph was taken by the Mage studio, located in Grand-Montrouge, France. Grand-Montrouge is a southern suburb of Paris. This vintage portrait postcard is probably from the 1910’s era.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL IN MARSEILLE, FRANCE (CARTE de VISITE)

This carte de visite photograph features an absolutely adorable little girl. She is wearing a cute dress and has a bow in her hair. The child is holding something wooden in her left hand. I can not identify the object. I wonder if she is holding a hobby horse. This portrait was taken at the Oliviere studio in Marseille, France. Marseille is a port city in southern France. This cdv has gold beveled edges.   SOLD

A MAN AND HIS BERLIET

french carThis vintage photograph features a well dressed man poses in front of his automobile. He is looking pretty self-important. His cap is resting on the top of his car and he is enjoying a cigarette. The auto is impressive. The back of the vehicle is a convertible. Note the headlights and the front bumper. Also of interest, is the sign behind the car for “Motoricine Motor Oil”. Compare the bumper to the bumpers of today. We’ve come a long way. The front grill has the Berliet signature and in addition, the Berliet’s emblem. Berliet was a French company that manufactured automobiles, buses, trucks, and military vehicles. The company was based near Lyon, France. The company was established in 1899 and was privately owned until 1967 when it became part of Citroen. In 1974, it was acquired by Renault. Berliet was merged with Saviem to become Renault Trucks in 1978. By 1980, there were no vehicles in the Berliet line. This photograph measures about 4 5/8″ x 3″ and is in very good condition. Note the bottom border of the photo appears to have been trimmed to fit a frame.

A WHITE MAN AND A YOUNG BLACK BOY SHARE A WARM MOMENT AND A LAUGH

This vintage photograph features a young black boy and a middle aged white man sharing a warm moment and a laugh. The pair seem to have a close relationship. Both are smiling and seem very relaxed as they experience their interaction. The child is wearing a shirt that is much too large for him. Perhaps the shirt is a hand-me-down from an older brother. The boy is barefoot. I am very curious about why this man and child ended up together and in conversation when this photo was taken. They appear to be standing in a field but their location is unidentified. The photo measures about 3 3/4″ x 3 3/4″.   SOLD

THEATER STAR YVONNE SAUTROT: PORTRAIT BY REUTLINGER IN PARIS, FRANCE

yvonne12020-06-14_170137 yvonne22020-06-14_170238Yvonne Sautrot is the subject of this 1896 cabinet card portrait by Reutlinger, a well known celebrity photography studio. Miss Sautrot assumes a most seductive pose in this risque image. To view other photographs by this celebrated studio, click on the category “Photographer: Reutlinger”. The reverse of this photograph lists the address of the studio as “Paris 21 Boulevard Monmarte, Paris. A stamp on the back of the image states “Hazebrouco, Incenieur – Opticien Paris”. Miss Sautrot assumes a most seductive pose in this image. Munsy Magazine (1896) published a portrait of Yvonne Sautrot and announced that she was playing in an adaptation of a popular English Melodrama called “The Fatal Card”. The French production went under the name of “La Dame de Carreau” (“The Queen of Hearts”). The writer of the article was preoccupied with Miss Sautrot’s beauty. He described her “charming features” and stated that “her beauty might well fit her to take” the place of actress Amy Busby who acted in the earlier version of the play. The writer also complimented Sautrot’s “special talent for posing effectively” in front of the camera. The Reutlinger Photography Studio was opened by Charles Reutlinger in Paris in 1850. Reutlinger was of German descent. The studio took portraits of many of the world’s beautiful, rich and famous people of the era. In 1880, Charles’ brother, Emile (1825-1907) took over operation of the studio. He was joined by his son Leopold (1863-1937) in 1883. Leopold took over the studio in 1890 and operated the business until 1930 when he lost an eye in an accident involving a champagne cork.  (SOLD)

MISS AIME : PRETTY ACTRESS PHOTOGRAPHED BY SAZERAC

                                                                    POSTCARD 1

aime12020-06-11_094551 POSTCARD 2

aime22020-06-11_094643POSTCARD 2 (CLOSE-UP)

These vintage real photo postcards feature Miss Aime, a Paris cabaret performer. She is pretty and has a wonderful smile. Preliminary research found no biographical information concerning this actress. The photographer of Postcard 1 is the Sazerac studio which was located at the “Hotel Prive” in Paris, France. Little information could be located about Mr. Sazerac; but one can easily find real photo postcard portraits of French show girls that were produced by his studio. In fact Britain’s National Portrait Gallery has one of Sazarac’s photographs (circa 1906) in it’s collection. Postcard 1 is part of a series (N. 829 Th. 93) and is in very good condition (see scans).                                                                                                                            Postcard 2 offers another view of Miss Aime. She is wearing a different dress, but once again, she is bedecked with flowers. Like postcard 1, this photo was taken by Sazerac. The two postcards are part of the same series. This postcard is numbered (N. 829 Th. 93).

THREE SIBLINGS POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT : YOUNGEST IN THE GROUP IS NOT HAVING A GOOD TIME

This vintage real photo postcard features three siblings posed for their family photograph. The children are well dressed. The standing sister seems relatively relaxed about being photographed. Perhaps she has been through the process before. Her little brother is less accepting of the situation. He is frowning, as if to say, “you can make me get photographed, but you can’t make me smile”. He has his arm resting on big sister’s shoulder more for security than balance. Seated sister seems to be neutral judging by her flat affect. The “Noko” stamp box on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the postcard paper was produced sometime between 1907 and 1929. The postcard is in good condition (see scans).

ANTONELLA LUALDI : PROLIFIC ACTRESS OF ITALIAN AND FRENCH FILMS AND TELEVISION

lualdi12020-06-06_113410The pretty actress seen in this vintage real photo postcard is Antonella Lualdi (1931- ). Although she is an Italian actress and singer, she appeared in both Italian and French films in the 1950’s and 1960’s. One of the more noted films was “The Red and the Black” (1954). Lualdi was born in Beirut, Lebanon. Her father was Italian and her mother was Greek. Growing up, she became fluent in Arabic, French, and Italian. Her career was propelled by winning a “new talent” competition held by the cinema magazine, “Hollywood”. She was introduced by the name of “Signorina X” and readers were asked to choose her stage name. Lualdi’s filmography published by IMDb reports that she has 107 TV and film credits ranging from 1949 through 2010. In 1955, she married Italian actor Franco Interlenghi. They had starred together in several films. The couple had two daughters, both of whom became actresses. This postcard was published in 1950 by the Globe (Paris). The card is part of a series (no. 326). The photographer of this portrait photo is Sam Levin (1904-1992). He was born in the Ukraine but emigrated to France when he was two years of age. He is famous for his stage photographs and his portraits of movie stars. His studio was in Paris. Levin was a film photographer for 75 films. He was arrested by the Nazis during World War II and was sent to a camp. His crime was, being Jewish. The fact that he was sent to a detention camp rather than a death camp, indicates there was a high ranking Nazi official acting as his guardian angel. He photographed nearly all the major French and European movie stars of the 1950’s and 1960’s. He is particularly celebrated for his photos of Brigitte Bardot. Levin did over 180 magazine covers in the United States. A number of Levin’s photo postcards can be found in the Cabinet Card Gallery. This vintage postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF AN ELDERLY MAN IN FAYETTE, OHIO

This cabinet card photograph features a friendly looking elderly man. His countenance and expression exudes a certain softness. He was born in Michigan, and married in Ohio in 1887 to June White (1867-1933). He had studios in Fayette, Wauseon, and Galion, Ohio. In 1908 he became a charter member of the Professional Photographers Society of Ohio. He served as an officer of the organization.
