A TOPLESS EDMONDE GUY AND E. VAN DUREN : DANCERS : RISQUE : GREYHOUNDS : RPPC

This rare risque vintage real photo postcard features famous European dance partners, Edmonde Guy (1903-1951) and Ernst Van Duren (?-1930). The pair are flanked by three regal looking greyhounds. If you look closely, you will see the dogs are leashed. Edmonde Guy was a French dancer and film actress. She also was a model for paintings by Dutch artist, Kees Van Dongen. In 1921 she and Van Duren formed a dance partnership. They performed both in Europe and the United States. In 1926, they were hired by Florenz Ziegfeld for his “Palm Beach Follies”. Guy and Van Duren were famous for their daring outfits and erotic performances. Evidence of their “steamy” work can be seen via this postcard image. Guy is wearing a sheer top, but she is virtually topless. Not much is known about Van Duren. One newspaper reported that he was Hungarian but his family was originally from the Netherlands. Besides being a dancer, he also acted. His first film role was in a French silent film in 1923. He played minor roles in a few films but his break out role was in a circus film called “Manege” (1928). He then starred in a film with Edmonde Guy, with the title “Princesse Mandane” (1928). In 1930, Van Duren committed suicide. There were rumors his self destruction was caused by the end of his relationship with Edmonde. However, some writers believe his suicide was related to his relationship with American dancer, Jack Forrest. This French postcard was published by J.R.P.R. and the photographer of the two dancers was G. L. Manuel Bros. SOLD

TWO AFFECTIONATE MEN IN WESTERN UNION UNIFORMS (SWEET IMAGE)

This vintage real photo postcard is special on a number of accounts. First, the photographer did an amazing job of capturing the affection between the two men in the photograph. Second, this is an excellent occupational photo. Both men are wearing Western Union uniforms. Their hats have the emblem of the Western Union company and the initials “WU” appear on the upper sleeve of the uniform. Note the pen in the seated gentleman’s pocket as well as the pants band below the knee of the standing man.  The probable purpose of the band is to keep one’s pants leg in place so that they do not get entangled in the spokes of bicycles that are used for delivering messages. A third factor making this card special is that it was produced in a photographers studio; and not mass produced. Finally, the photographer of this image was very talented, and produced an overall wonderful photograph. Sorry for the editorializing. I don’t usually gush about the postcards that I sell.  SOLD

MAI TAI SING : PIONEERING ASIAN AMERICAN ACTRESS : NIGHT CLUBS : PRESS PHOTO

This vintage press photo features pretty American actress and businesswoman, Mai Tai Sing (1923-2018). She was born in California but spent much of her younger years in Hong Kong. She and her family moved back to California when she was about fourteen years of age. One of her first jobs was as a waitress at the Forbidden City nightclub. Her experience there sparked her interest in performing. In the early 1940’s she became a chorus girl there. She met Wilbur and Jessie Tai Sing, a dancing duo at the club. She not only replaced Jessie in the act, but also married Wilbur. In 1953, she appeared with Tony Curtis in the film, “Forbidden”. Her last film role was in “Strange Portrait”. She became romantically involved with the film’s star, Jeffry Hunter. In the 1950’s and 1960’s she also performed in television roles. Mai Tai was also involved with nightclub management. She ran a club in San Francisco named “The Rickshaw”. In the 1970’s, she relocated to Hawaii. She managed clubs there for 28 years and retired in 2003. The IMDb gives her 9 film and television credits between 1951 and 1990. Mai Tai was a pioneering Asian American actress. She did not play stereotypical Asian roles or speak in stereotypical broken pidgin English. This vintage press photo has Mai Tai Sing’s name printed on it’s reverse as well as the word “Rickshaw”. There is little doubt that this photograph was taken at the Rickshaw nightclub, where Mai Tai was hostess and manager. The photographer is identified as Kenneth Lee. His name is ink stamped on the reverse of the photo. SOLD

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND HER DOLL : CLINTON, IOWA : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features an adorable long haired little girl standing next to her seated doll. The toy doll is sitting in a rocking chair. The girl is wearing a “fancy” dress. The child appears quite content as she poses for her photograph at the Temple studio in Clinton, Iowa. “The 1901 Biographical Record of Clinton County, Iowa, Illustrated” provides some information about the photographer, Gilbert Lawrence Temple. He was born in Ohio. He was schooled in Ohio and was a student at Otterbein University for two years. In 1870 he began his career as a photographer in Beloit, Wisconsin. After two years he sold his business and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he went to work for J. F. Ryder, a leading photographer in that city. By 1874, Temple was working for the J. H. Reed studio in Clinton. He remained an employee of Reed for 7 years and then opened his own studio (Santee & Temple). In 1884, Temple bought out his partner and became the sole proprietor of the studio. This vintage photograph was found in a photo album belonging to Nellie Frances Pinney (1878-1966). This cabinet card has gold beveled edges. SOLD

GARDEN GNOME : PUMPKIN : CUTE DOG : DISTINGUISED FAMILY : PORCH : CABINET CARD

This unique cabinet card photograph is chock full of interesting things to look at. Note the garden gnome, the pumpkin, and the dog lying on what looks to be a towel. Also note how the photographer chose to pose his subjects. On the ground level the boy and girl are in the center and they are flanked by three women on each side. A man is standing in the center of the porch and he is in the middle between two couples. The gnome, dog and pumpkin are strategically placed in the front center of the photo. The photographer’s need for order and balance may tell us something about his personality. It would be interesting to know more about the subjects and their relationship to one another. SOLD
