STUDIO PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD

This vintage real photo postcard features a tall and thin young woman posing for her portrait at Chung’s (?) Studio in the town Port of Spain, Trinidad. She is wearing one of her nicest dresses for the occasion. Her accessories include white gloves, a bracelet, earrings and a pretty hat. The AZO stamp box indicates that the postcard dates back to sometime between 1926 and the 1940’s. The city of Port of Spain is the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago. Note the photographer’s embossed stamp at the bottom center of the card. SOLD

McMULLIN’S BROTHERS FURNITURE STORE: DELIVERY BY HORSE AND WAGON

This vintage real photo postcard features a father and son on a horse drawn wagon. This is no ordinary wagon. Instead, as the painted sign on the side of the wagon states; it is the delivery wagon for the McMullin Brothers furniture store. The business was located in Anthony, Kansas. Research reveals that one of the McMullin brothers was Joseph Franklin McMullin (1857-1914). He can be found in the US Census of 1910 and his occupation is listed as the proprietor of a furniture store. Ten years earlier, the 1910 US Census reports that Joseph McMullin was working as a farmer, despite the fact that in 1909, the local newspaper, “The Anthony Republican”, ran an ad for McMullin Brothers furniture store. This photo postcard represents a piece of both Anthony and Kansas history. It is also a record of the workings of small business at the beginning of the twentieth century. Note that there is no furniture in the rear of the wagon. It is likely that the wagon and its driver and young assistant, presumably father and son, took the wagon out for the specific purpose of being photographed. The father is wearing nice clothing, not work clothes, which supports the theory that he was not photographed while on the job. This postcard’s AZO stamp box indicates that it dates back to between 1904 and 1918. SOLD

JAPANESE PERFORMER : YOUNG, PRETTY, AND SMARTLY DRESSED

This vintage real photo postcard features a young and pretty Japanese performer. She may be an actress, a dancer, or some other type of entertainer. She is wearing a beautiful kimono and holding a large fan with an interesting pattern. Note her wonderful hair treatment. This lovely postcard has an AZO stamp box which indicates that the card dates back to between 1910 and 1930. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

ISABELA DE SAGUA : THE VENICE OF CUBA (1910’S)

This vintage real photo postcard features a building in Isabela de Sagua, Cuba. The building is surrounded by water. One must walk across a dock in order to enter or exit the building. A sign on the building identifies it as “Aduana Sagua Grande”. The english translation reveals that the building is a customs house. Isabela de Sagua is a small town which was once one of Cuba’s major ports. Presently, it is a fishing enclave. The town is also referred to as Isabella and it possesses the nickname of “The Cuban Venice”. The village was founded in 1842. It is located in Cuba’s Villa Clara Province. In the 1800’s, Isabela was a very prosperous town. It was an import/export center and was very engaged in the sugar trade. At one point, there were over a hundred sugar plantations in the region. The village was famous for its stilted houses perched above the ocean. The poor economy and the pounding it experienced from multiple hurricanes, left few of these houses standing. The demise of the Cuban economy led to the demise of Isabela’s “glory days”. The “AZO” stamp box on this postcard indicates that it dates to sometime between 1910 and 1930. VINTAGE PORTRAIT OF FOUR FIREMEN, A FIRE TRUCK, AND FIRE HOSE (RPPC) c. 1910

This vintage real photo postcard features a firetruck with four uniformed firemen on board. This is a great looking truck. Note the starting crank, the fire bell, the lantern, and the bug eye headlights. The truck is parked in front of the fire station’s garage, Another garage can be seen in the photo, and that garage houses a fire hose on wheels. The location of this firehouse is unidentified. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of this postcard indicates that it was published sometime between 1904 and 1918. SOLD

A PORTRAIT OF TWO NICELY DRESSED AND PRETTY YOUNG WOMEN (VINTAGE RPPC)

This vintage real photo postcard features two young women posing together for their portrait. Perhaps the pair are mother and daughter although I believe they may be sisters. The woman in the dark dress and hat is wearing a pince nez. Both woman are wearing at least two rings. The postcard, on AZO paper, was produced sometime between 1904 and 1918.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF FOUR KIOWAH NATIVE AMERICANS ON HORSEBACK : FOURSOME INCLUDES CHIEF QUALUPAH AND CHIEF HUNTING HORSE

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of four Native Americans on horseback. The foursome are members of the Kiowah tribe. Among the group are Chief Qualupah and Chief Hunting Horse.The other two riders appear to be women. The four are dressed in Native American clothing. They are in a field which has lines of rope holding American flags.  Perhaps they are  invited guest to an Amrican patriotic holiday celebration. Researching Chief Qualupah was an exercise in frustration. I learned nothing about him. There were chiefs mentioned that had names close to “Qualupah”,  leading me to believe that there are several different spellings of his name. Information about Chief Hunting Horse was plentiful. He was a well known scout during the Custer, Sheridan, and Sherman era. In 1871 he enlisted for a two year stint in the Seventh Cavalry commanded by Gerneral Custer. By the end of his legendary scouting career, his friends included Theodore Roosevelt and Geronimo. He was born in Medicine Lodge Kansas in 1846. He was the son of a Kiowa war chief and a Spanish woman who had been kidnapped in Mexico and raised by the Kiowas. Hunting horse came to “Indian Territory” (Oklahoma) at the age of fifteen. In 1917 he appeared in the silent Western film, “Daughter of the Dawn”. In the early 1900’s relatives began celebrating his birthday. These celebrations occurred every year until his death. Military and political figure were often among the attendees. Chief Hunting Horse died at the age of 107 and his funeral included full military honors. Who are the Kiowa? They were considered a nomadic tribe of the plains. It is thought that they originated in the northern basin of the Missouri River but migrated to the Black Hills around 1650. They lived peacefully there with the Crow Indians until they were invaded by the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux; resulting in the Kiowas moving further south. There they fought with the Comanche, but with the help of the Spanish, the two tribes formed an alliance and agreed to share their land. Joined by the Plains Apache, they hunted, traveled and fought war together.They raided settlements in Texas and New Mexico. They stole horses and mules which they used to trade with the Plains Indian tribes. In 1867, the Kiowa signed a treaty and agreed to settle on a reservation in Oklahoma. In 1901 their lands were open for settlement by whites and dissolving the contiguous reservation. Today, there are more than 12,000 Kiowa tribe members in Oklahoma and throughout the Southwest. The photograph taken for this postcard was taken by the Electric Studio. The postcard has an AZO stamp box indicating that the postcard dates back to sometime between 1910 and 1930. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY ASIAN WOMAN IN FORMAL TRADITIONAL GARB (JAPANESE? INDONESIAN?)

This vintage real photo postcard begs some answers, but I’m stumped. I have never seen the type of clothing displayed on this card before; despite my exposure to a multitude of international postcards. This interesting studio portraiture features a pretty Asian woman dressed in some unusual garb. It appears to be formal traditional clothing. I do not know which culture that this dress represents. I am hypothesizing that woman is Japanese. However, the previous owner of this postcard thought the woman may have been from Indonesia. The owner’s guess is written on the reverse of the card. The woman in this photo is holding a basket in one hand and an object I can’t identify in the other hand. There is an AZO stamp box on the back of the postcard. It reveals that this card was produced sometime between 1910 and 1930.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY SALVATION ARMY COUPLE : (1910-1930’s)

  This vintage real photo postcard features a lovely uniformed Salvation Army couple. Note the man and woman’s “S” pin worn on their collars. The woman’s wire rimmed glasses are similar to the wire rims in style today. The Salvation Army was established in 1865. It began in London, England. Today, the Christian charitable organization has 1.7 million (Salvationists) in 131 nations. The “AZO” stamp box on the reverse of this photo postcard indicates that it was published sometime between 1910 and 1930. The image is a studio photo. This postcard portrait is in excellent condition (see scans).

TWO HANDSOME SOLDIERS POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND (WORLD WAR I ERA)

This vintage real photo postcard features two handsome uniformed World War I era soldiers posing for their portrait at a studio in Baltimore, Maryland. The photograph was taken by Martin D Trainor. His name is embossed near the bottom right hand corner of the image. The Maryland Historical Society has one or more of his photographs in their collection. The AZO stamp box indicates that the postcard was published between 1918-1930.   (SOLD)
