Lilly is usually seen on vintage postcards with her sister, and the cards are generally labelled “The Dejo Sisters”.  A preliminary search found no biographical information about this sister’s act. The postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co.. MAY FRIS : PRETTY DANCER : MEMBER OF THE TILLER GIRLS DANCE TROUPE : RPPC

This lovely vintage real photo postcard features dancer and postcard model, May Fris. Fris was a member of the very popular Tiller Girl woman’s dance troupe. The group began in London in the 1890’s and kept growing until there were dozens of Tiller Girl troupes spread around the world. Variety Magazine described the Tiller Troupe of Girls as very American, even though they were English; and that they were “good to look upon, well dressed and a good show”.  This postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co. as part of a series (306/2). The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. RETA WALTER : GERMAN OPERA STAR : MURDERED BY EX BOYFRIEND AT AGE TWENTY : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a famous German opera singer who met a tragic end. In 1906, hours before she was to go on stage as Carmen, at the Opera Comique, Walter was murdered in her own home. She was killed by her ex boyfriend, Karl August Hesse, who suspected that Walter was planning on becoming engaged to Juan Raventos, a Spanish Tenor. Hesse committed suicide after killing the 21 year-old Miss Walter. Hesse was a frustrated opera singer who could not find success. He had a history of being jealous of other men. He also had a history of physically abusing Walter in his jealous tantrums. Walter had tried to end the relationship with Hesse but he would not comply. The police found letters from Raventos in Hesse’s apartment. Raventos had written to Hesse telling him that he would not end his relationship with Walter.  This postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co.. The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. This antique postcard is in good condition (see scans).

PHRYNE : NINA BARKIS : GREEK COURTESAN : EMAILLOGRAPHIE : RPPC

This color tinted vintatge real photo postcard features actress, Nina Barkis playing the ancient Greek courtesan, Phryne. She has very long hair and she is shielding herself with a transparent lacey fabric. Miss Barkis was an opera singer and dancer. She was known for playing “Salome” and for modelling for photographer Jean Agelou. She also appeared on cards by postcard publisher, Gerlach. This image was created by a photographic process called “Emaillographie”. It is interesting that the first five letters of the technique is “Email”. This vintage postcard is of French origin. SOLD

MARAQUITA ROSTANO : A PRETTY DANCER (PHOTO BY GERLACH)

This vintage real photo postcard features dancer Maraquita Rostano. Although my research found other postcard images of Miss Rostano, I was unable to locate any biographical information. The postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co.. The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. The postcard was part of a series (no725/3). The message on the card was written in 1910 and the card was addressed to En Ville (In Town). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

GORGEOUS WOMAN HOLDS VASE ATOP HER HEAD (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a most gorgeous woman posing with a vase atop her head. The woman is absolutely beautiful and her eyes are amazingly seductive.
