Miss Agnes Delaporte is looking quite beautiful as she poses in her role as Mercedes in “Monte Cristo Jr”. The production first appeared at the Gaiety Theatre in December, 1886. The Cabinet Card was photographed by the Stereoscopic Company in England. The London Stereoscopic Co. billed itself as “Photographers to the Royal Family”. GREAT BEARD DISCOVERED IN MYSTERY TOWN, NEW YORK
This Cabinet Card is the newest addition to the “Beards (Only the Best)” category. This fine gentleman has a large beard and note his longish hair styled to cover his bald spot. Is that a mullet he’s sporting. The subject is identified as Dr Henry Hamley or Hawley. The photographer is F. M. Foster of Moila, New York. I can not find any references to a town in New York called Moila. Perhaps I am reading the town’s name incorrectly and would appreciate any help discovering the location of the studio which produced this photograph. Please help solve the mystery. YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICAN GIRL WITH BEAUTIFUL EYES IN BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY
This young African American girl strikes a serious pose as she sits for her portrait at Tichenor’s Photo. Parlors in Burlington, New Jersey. She is dressed up and has bows in her hair for her day at the photographer’s studio. The New York Times reported the death of George Tichenor, photographer and artist on November 7, 1911. He died of a heart attack while setting up his camera to photograph a new ambulance in Burlington, New Jersey. The Times reported that Mr Tichenor was known as the South Jersey weather prophet, for his amazing ability to predict the weather months in advance.
THEODOR MOMMSEN: GERMAN CLASSICAL SCHOLAR, NOBEL PRIZE WINNER AND MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) is pictured in the Cabinet card photographed by Giacomo Brogil in Firenze, Italy. Mommsen was a German classical scholar, historian, jurist, journalist, politician, archaeologist, and writer. He is considered the greatest classicist of the 19th century. He was a great scholar of Roman History. He won the Nobel Prize in 1902. He was a member of the German and Prussian Parliaments. Mark Twain wrote of meeting him on his European tour of 1892. The photograph is from the Photographs of Celebrities collection of Charles L Ritzmann.
PORTRAIT OF YOUNG WOMAN IN INDIA
This Cabinet card is a portrait of a young woman, in fine fashion, posing for photographer Thomas A. Rust in India. She is holding something in her hands but the object is unclear. Research reveals that Thomas Alfred Rust was one of the most well known early photographers in India. One source states he was active in Allahabad and Mussoorie between 1900s and 1920’s. Another reference states he was active in India and Asia between 1880 and circa 1889. It would be fascinating to know why this woman was in India and what she was experiencing at the time of this photograph.
PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE YOUNG AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILD
This Cabinet card is a image of an adorable young African-American child. The child has a very expressive face and is nicely dressed as she poses at the photographers studio. The name of the studio is too difficult to decipher and the location of the studio is not noted.
ROSE LEMOINE: PRETTY THEATER ACTRESS AND POSSIBLE MODEL FOR THE “GIBSON GIRL”
Theater actress Rose Lemoine is the subject of this Cabinet Card photographed by the Dana studio of New York. The photograph was part of the Charles L. Ritzmann collection. Ritzmann was a famous importer of theatrical photographs. The attractive Ms Lemoine was thought by some to be the model or the “Gibson Girl”. This upset some Americans because Lemoine was from Cuba, not the United States and the “Gibson Girl” was illustrator Charles Dana’s personification of the feminine ideal. The “Gibson Girl” was a popular figure for twenty years (about 1890-1910). Lemoine’s mother was Cuban and her father was a French coffee planter. In 1903, the New York Times mentions Lemoine as appearing in a Broadway play called “The Best of Friends”. Also appearing in that play was Lionel Barrymore and Agnes Booth.
BEAUTIFUL THEATRICAL ACTRESS: GLADYS (WHATS-HER-NAME?)
This is an image of a beautiful actress posing for her portrait holding a stringed instrument. Note her fashionable appearance highlighted by a terrific hat. The image comes from a collection of theatrical actresses. The photographer is Falk, famed theatrical photographer, of New York City. Perhaps a visitor to this blog will know this actresses last name. Her first name is Gladys. In addition, it is hoped that someone may be able to identify the type of stringed instrument she is holding.
YOUNG WOMAN AT HER CONFIRMATION IN VALPARAISO, INDIANA
This cabinet card appears to be an image of a young woman celebrating her confirmation. Note the flower arrangements, the woman’s gown, and the cabinet card photograph on the table. There is also a card on the table with something handwritten on it. Unfortunately, I can not read the writing. The studio of J. M. Harkless of Valparaiso, Indiana is the photographer of this cabinet card.
