PORTRAIT OF AN AFFLUENT WOMAN : FASHIONISTA : NEW YORK CITY : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a very well dressed woman. She earns the title of being called a fashionista. The manner in she is dressed strongly suggests that she is affluent. This photograph was taken at the studio of James Alba Bostwick.  Bostwick’s studio was located between 8th and 9th Streets in New York City. I have at least three other cabinet photos by Bostwick, and his subjects all appear to be upper crust. Print on the reverse of the cabinet card notes that the studio was established in 1867. James Alba Bostwick was born in 1846 or 1848 in Livonia, New York. At one point in his photography career he was a partner in a firm named Bostwick and Bancker. A collection of Bostwick’s work is owned by the University of New Hampshire’s library. In 1927 Bostwick died in Brooklyn, New York.  He was 79 years of age at the time of his death.  SOLD

MAYPOLE : LARGE GROUP OF CHILDREN DANCING AROUND THE MAYPOLE : VINTAGE RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a large group of children celebrating May Day. They are standing in a circle and most of the children are holding a ribbon attached to a Maypole. What is a Maypole and what is the point of this tradition? A maypole is a tall pole, usually made of wood, that is erected as part of a traditional May Day celebration. The pole is usually decorated with flowers, ribbons, and other decorations, and people dance around it, weaving the ribbons into intricate patterns. The maypole is a symbol of spring and renewal, and the tradition of dancing around the maypole dates back hundreds of years in Europe. In some cultures, the maypole was also seen as a symbol of fertility, and was associated with various rituals and customs related to the coming of spring. SOLD

LAURA RUSSELL : PRETTY PERFORMER : METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART : UNCOMMON RPPC

This uncommon vintage real photo postcard features actress, Laura Russell.  Very little biographical information about Miss Russell could be found during my preliminary research. I was able to find her image on three different tobacco cards. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has at least two of them in their collection. This is an undivided back postcard. It was likely published between 1901 and 1908. The card was published by Neue Photographische Gesellschaft AG,(Berlin) as part of a series (No.A 14). This portrait postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
